Description

R. F. FISHER & C. S. BALLUU;
Fasteners for KnolpSpindles.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT F. FISHER AND CHARLES S. BALLOU, OF NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH,
MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR KNOB-SPINDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157.746, dated December 15, 1874; application filed September 10, 1,874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RoBT. F. FISHER and O. S. BALLOU, of North Attl-eborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in devices for fastening or locking the latches of doors from the inside; and the invention consists in forming the rose of the handle with a socket arranged radially, through which is passed a bolt or pin, the inner end of which enters a hole or socket formed in 'a spindle for its reception, thereby locking the latch by preventing the spindle from turning, the bolt be-' in g also looked in manner hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a portion of a latch side of a door, showing my improved fastening device; Fig. 2, a detached view of the locking-bolt.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents the door, and B the frame or jamb in which the latch operates. G is the rose of the handle, secured to the door by screws or by any of the well-known methods, and having a socket, 0, arranged radially, as shown in the drawing. D is a bolt or pin having a suitable head, d, for convenience of handling. It is cut with a longitudinal groove, d, a portion of its length, and also laterally at one end of the longitudinal portion of the groove, as shown at Fig. 2. E is a small screw passed through the socket c, with its point resting in the groove d of the bolt D. G is the spindle, formed with a bolt-hole at the point opposite the bolt D, when the door is latched, and it may also have a similar bolt-hole at the point opposite to the bolt D when the door is unlatched.
The operation of our invention is as follows: When the door is closed and the latch in its keeper it may be locked by pushing the bolt D inward, the inner end entering the corresponding bolt-hole in the spindle. When it is desired to prevent the latch from operating, the handle is turned so as to disengage the latch from the keeper, and the bolt D is then inserted in the other bolt-hole in the spindle.
When it is desired to permit the latch to operate freely without locking,'the bolt is drawn out as far as the slot (1 will permit, and then turned so as to bring the screw E into the lateral portion of the slot, thereby preventing it from moving inward and locking the latch accidentally by the jarring or slamming of the door.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
The rose 0, having the radial socket c, and .7
the bolt 1), having groove 01, and screw E, in combination with the spindle, having boltholes, substantially as and for the purpose specified. y
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own invention, we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT F. FISHER. CHARLES S. BALLOU. Witnesses:
THOS. G. SANDLAND, CHAS. G. FALEs.
