. A. MCLAIN TOOL FOR BENDING PIPE, BARS, AND THE LIKE Filed Dec. 5, 1924 INVENTOR Patented Mar. 16, 1926.
ANDREW MGLA IN, OF CARNEGIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
.TOOL FOBl BEND-ENG PIPE, BARS, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed December To oZZ whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, Aivmniw Molmix, a citizen of the United States, and resident oilicarnegie, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in Tools for Bending Pipe, Bars, and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to bending tools, and particularly to a tool suitable for sending pipe and the like.
One object of my invention is to provide a tool whereby the smaller sizes of. pipe may be conveniently bent manually and in bonds of varying degrees.
Still another object of my invention is to simplify and improve generally the structure and operation of bending tools.
One form which my invention may take is shown in the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 is a view, in side elevation, of a tool embodying my invention, with a piece of pipe in position therein; Fig. 2 is an end elevational View of the device of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the positions assumed. by the parts of the tool during a bending, operation.
The tool consists of a handle 4: of suitable length bifurcated at its lower end. and provided with perforations for the reception of bolts 5 and 6 that serve as pivots for the bending dies.
The bending dies consist of a normally stationary die member 7 which is pivotally supported from the bolt 5, and a movable die member 8 that is pivotally supported by the bolt 6. The movable die member provided with a series of perforations preterably arranged on an arcuate line as shown, to provide for adjustability as between it and its fulcrum 6 that is carried by the handle 4-.
The dies 7 and 8 are beveled or curved as indicated at the points 9 and 10, respectively, to eliminate corners which would otherwise bite into or mar the pipe. This is particularly advantageous in the case ot the die member 8, because it ordinarily slides along the pipe somewhat during a bending operation.
In the operation of my device, the bending tool is placed in position upon a pipe 11, and the bolt 6 placed in that hole of the die 8 which will result in securing a bend of the desired curvature when the 5, 1924. Serial No. 754,145.
as well, as with those whose diameters are substantially equal to the openings through I the dies.
lVhen the parts have been arranged as shown in Fig. 1, the handle is moved to the right, causing the die 8 to fulcrum upon the upper end of the die 7 and the bottom portion thereot'to engage the underside of the pipe and draw the outer end thereof upward shown in Fig. 3, the lower end of the die 8 meantime sliding; longitudinally of the pipe 11. V 7
Upon completion o1 the bending operation the tool may he slid from the pipe, ready for use in connection with another pipe.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide a tool that maybe convenien carried by electricians, plumbers, pipe litters and the like, and employed in bonding pipe and conduit at the place oi installation, and that the tool is capable of placing a comparatively smooth bend in pipe and of substantially any desired angle.
It will of course be understood that various changes in detail and general arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention a as defined in the accompanying claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bending tool comprising a handle, a fixed die member, a second die member movable with the handle, said die members adapted to engage a pipe, and means for causing the movable die member to move in an areuate path of decreasing radius, upon movement of the handle.
2. A bending tool comprising a handle, a fixed die member normally vertically disposed, and a movable die member fulcruming on the upper end. of the stationary die member and pivotally connected to the handle at a point above the fulcrum point of said movable die.
3. A bending tool comprising a handle, a stationary die pivotally connected to one extremity of said handle, a movable die member, an arcuate extension on said movable die member, means for pivotally connecting the said extension to said handle, and a fulcrum for the movable die member her, an areuate extension on said movable die member, means for adjustably and pivotally connecting the said extension to said handle, and a fulcrum for the movable die member disposed e'ocentrieally of the pivot for said extension.
5. A bending tool comprising handle, a stationarydie pivotally connected to the lower end of said handle, a movable die member, an'areuate extension on said die member, and means for pivotally connecting the said extension to said handle, the said extension being so disposed as to fulcrum upon the upper end ofthe stationary die member.
6. Bending apparatus for cylindrical jeots, comprising means for holding an object to be bent, and a die member for engaging said object and movable longitudt nally thereof, in an areuate path of gradually deoreasing radius.
In testimony whereof I, the said Axum-1w MCLAIN, have hereunto set my hand,
ANDREW MQLAIN
