Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN PLUMMER, OF LONDON, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPOKE-LATHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0- 157,696, dated December 15, 1874; application filed October 15, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN PLUMMER, of the city of London, in the county of Middlesex, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented Improvements in Spoke-Lathes using three centers, of which the following is a specification The object of this invention is to prevent vibration in the spoke during the process of dressing by a lathe, the result of such vibration being that the spoke is turned out in a rough and unfinished manner.
My improvement insures its being held perfectly steadily during the operation, thus allowing equal action to the knives of the machine, so that the spoke is turned out perfect, and finished ready for use.
A, in the accompanying drawing, is a portion of the reel of a spoke'lathe, having three centers, B B B, for holding the spokes while in the process of dressing by the knives 0. Two of these spokes are shown at D E; the lower one, E, is shown in position for dressing. In order to prevent the vibration of this spoke, and insure perfect steadiness thereof, I attach to-the shaft F of the reel a triangular shaped block, G, of cast-iron or other metal, having three slots in its sides, into which are hinged the stems of three weights, H H H formed of cast-iron or other suitable material. Of these three weights, two will always be lying against the shaft F, as shown, out of the way of the workman; but the lower one will necessarily fall down upon the spoke which is undergoing the operation of dressing, and, pressing upon the said spoke near the center, render it perfectly steady and secure. These weights may be constructed of any required shape, either round, as shown, or square, as may be thought fit. A set-screw in the side of the block G renders it capable of adjustment on the shaft A to any required length of spoke.
I claim as my invention The triangular metal block G, having the three metal weights H H H hinged thereto, in combination with the reel Aof a threecenter spoke-lathe, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN PLUMMER. Witnesses:
HENRY BEECH, EDWARD HARRIS.
