lUNlilFED PATENT PAUL K. BARKER, OF G-REER, SOUTH CARDLINA.
MACHINE FOR GRINDING SPINDLES.
Application filed March 13, 1916.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, PAUL K. BARKER, a citizen of the United States residing at Greer, in the county of Greenvllle and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Grinding Spindles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same.
This invention relates to grinding machines and pertains more particularly to machines for grinding and repointing spindles employed in cotton mill machinery.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed and efiicient machine in which the spindles may be repointed by' grinding the ends thereof and which is so constructed that the spindle support may be set at any desired angle relatively to the grinding wheel and in which the wheel is adjustable relatively to said spindle support to prevent cutting of a groove in the wheel by the spindle end With this and other objects in view the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 represents a plan view of a machine constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section taken on the line 3-8 of Fig. 1; Fig. t is a transverse section taken on the line 4t-it of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a similar View taken on line 55 of Fig. 2. 1
In the embodiment illustrated a suppor ing structure is shown comprising a supporting base 1 including side bars 1 and having suitable legs 2, and on which is mounted a spindle grinding mechanism constituting this invention which comprises an emery wheel 3 having a shaft 41: extending rearwardly therefrom and mounted in, a suitable bearing 5 carried by a standard 6 which is slidably mounted in guides 7 arranged. transversely on the base plate 1 to provide for the lateral adjustment of the emery wheel for a purpose hereinafter to be described. A threaded shaft 8 extends through the standard 6 having threaded engagement therewith and is rotatably mount ed in suitable bearings carried by the base Specification of Letters Patent.

plate, being provided at its outer end with a hand wheel 9 for turning it. This shaft 8 is held against movement in its bearings by collars l0 and 11 shown arranged on opposite sides of one of the bearings to reliably position the shaft and hold it against From this description it will be understood that the turning of this shaft 8 will reciprocate the standard 6 back and forth transversely of the base plate, and which is designed for varying the position of the emery wheel relatively to the spindle to be ground, as will be hereinafter described.
Mounted on the rear end of the shaft 4 are a plurality of driving pulleys 12, three being here shown, and which are of difierent sizes and are designed to receive the driving belt for operating the emery wheel, said belt being shifted onto the different sized pulleys according to the position in which the shaft 4- is located, thereby pro viding for the proper tensioning of the belt for driving said shaft 4.
A spindle support 13 is shown mounted on the base plate 1 in advance of the emery wheel 3 and which is swiveled to turn in a horizontal plane, being here shown in the form of a sleeve 1% having a shank or stem 15 revolubly mounted in a supporting block 16 and which is adapted to be held in adjusted position by a set screw 17 extending laterally through said block and intersecting the path of said shank 15. This block 16 is adjustable longitudinally on the base 1, said block being here shown provided with depending flanges 16 which engage opposite sides of one of the side bars 1 constituting a member of the supporting base 1, and which is slotted longitudinally as shown at 18 to receive a screw 18 depending from said block and which extends downwardly through and beyond the side bar 1 and is designed to be engaged by a nut 18' for reliably clamping said block to the side bar on which it is mounted.
In the use of this machine, a spindle S to be treated is positioned in the sleeve 1% with the point to be ground extending into the path of the emery wheel 3 and said sleeve 14 is adjusted at the desired angle according to the angle desired to be imparted to said spindle point. When so positioned, the emery wheel is set in motion and the spindle ground to provide the proper point, said wheel being adjusted when de+ sired to present a new surface for engagement with the spindle point to be ground to prevent the spindle points from cutting grooves in the wheel such as would occur if the wheel were not adjustable.
I claim as my invention 1. In a spindle grinding machine the combination of a supporting base, a spindle support adjustable longitudinally thereon and mounted to turn in a horizontal plane, means for holding said support in adjusted position, a standard adjustable transversely of said supporting base, a bearing carried by said standard, a shaft revolubly mounted in said bearing and having a grinding wheel fixed to one end, and driving pulleys carried by the other end, and means engaging said standard for reciprocating it back and forth transversely of said supporting base.
2. In a spindle grinding machine the combination of a supporting base, a block mounted for longitudinal adjustment thereon, means for holding said block in adjusted position, a spindle receiving sleeve swiveled on said block and having means for holding it in adjusted position, and a grinding wheel mounted on said supporting base and adjustable to position varying grinding surfaces to the point of the spindle to be ground.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
