FREDERICK G. JOHNSON, 0F JERSEY SHORE, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING HOLES. IN METALLIC PANEL-BOXES, &,o.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
Patented may to, tear.
Application filed August 11, 1916. Serial No. 114L410.
To all whom it may concern! Be it known thatI, Fnnorauox C. JOHN-' ticular locations determined by the specific arrangement ofthe connections and associefiect the operation.
The main object of my invention is the provision of a suitable machine by which the holes can easily and quickly be made and which machine can be operated by one person. However, it is not intended that the machine shall be restricted to this particular use, as it maybe employed to cut holes in any metallic plates, orfbars, or the like, for any purpose desired.
With the above recited ends in view, my invention consists in certain novelties of construction and combinations of parts as herein set forth and claimed.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a example of the embodiment of the invention constructed and the-parts combinedaccording to the best method of procedure I have so far devised for the purpose.
Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of the entire machine, showing part of a metallic panel, through which a hole is to be cut, clamped in position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1 with the panel removed.
Fig. 3 is a front end view in elevation.
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the cutter 1 block, showing the centering pin or polnt,
7 is a perspective view of one of the retaining plates.
The frame of the machine consists of a clamp brace A,Bpreferably of cast metal, havmg an arm provided with a slot C, aparallel arm D widened to form a table or bed to receive a box panel or plate, for example, the panel E through which the holes are to be out, two spaced threaded holes F F within which are two threaded clamping screws G G for holding, the panel E upon the table, and a slot H to receive the fingers of the hand for holding and carrymg the machine.
The brace may have suitable strengthening ribs, as I. The central part of the table or bed should be in a plane below the ends thereof, as shown, so the cutter will having at the top end a nut and washer" N O, and a nut P by which the screw bolt is adjustably and rigidly held in the slot- C of the frame, and at the lower end a centering point Q about which the cutter block rotates as a center.-
The adjusting screw bolt is reduced in diameter at ,R within the cutter block and the surface of the reduced portion is engaged by a set-screw S, 'thus providing for the raising or lowering of the cutter block relative to the screw bolt, the distance between the shoulders defining the said part B, as clearly shown by Fig. 5.
The numeral 1 designates a cylindrical hole in the side of the block; 2, an open slot at the bottom of the hole; 3, the cutter of any approved type secured to or integral ofthe adjusting screw; 9, 9, two curved removable clamping plates cut away to engage the shank of the screw at adjacent ends; and 10, 10, two screws for securing the plates to the cutter block.
The cutter block is provided with a seface 15 being removably secured to the boss shown by Fig. 1, the steel" panel or other 12 by screws, as shown. Balls 16 are located between the bearings and project above the surface of the plate. A threaded nut 17 on the adjusting screw rod frictionally engages the balls. and below the plate 14 is located one end of an operating lever 18 which has pivoted to its under surface a pawl 19 yieldably held in engagement with the ratchet teeth by a spring 20 hearing against a pin 21 secured to the lever arm.
vious from the foregoing description. As
plate is firmly clamped upon the table or bed, the cutter block properly supported from the slotted arm through the medium of the clamping nuts, the centering point brought in contact with the panel Where the hole is to be cut, the cutter adjusted accordbed, means for clamping a panel or plate t6 ing to the diameter of the desired hole, the nut tightened upon the ball bearings, and the lever then reciprocated, rotating the cutter block and cutter.
The machine as described provides a means which can be operated by one person for quickly and easily cutting holes in panel boxes wherever desired, thus minimizing labor and saving time. As previously stated, the machine can be used for cutting holes in other plates or bars, and for special uses the size of the machine may be of relatively large dimensions. While I have illustrated and described only one embodiment of the invention, it is intended to embrace within the scope of the claims other embodiments embodying unsubstantial variations, changes, and modifications.
What I claim is:
1. The combination in a machine for cutting holes, of a clamp brace having an arm,
an arm spaced therefrom forming a tableor bed, means for clamping a panel or plate to the table, a rotary cutter block carrying a cutter, means for centering the-cutter block, means for vertically adjusting the cutter block and cutter. relative to the said' means for centering the cutter block, means for rotatably supporting the cutter block between the said arms, and means for rotating the cutter block and cutter.
2. The combination in a machine for cutting holes, of a clamp brace having an arm, an arm spaced therefrom forming a table or the table, a cutter block carrying a cutter,
About the boss 12 means for centering the cutter block; means i for rotatably supporting the cutter block between the said arms, and means for rotating the cutter block and cutter; the-means for supporting the cutter block consisting of an adjusting screw bolt carrying the means for centering the cutter block.
3. The combination in a machine for cutting holes, of a clamp brace having an arm,
4. The combination in a machine of thecharacter described, of a U-shaped frame The method of using the machine is ob-' having substantially parallel arms spaced apart, one of said arms having a slot and the other arm a work supporting table or bed, of an adjusting screw bolt provided with nuts for clamping one end of the bolt within the said slot and the other end hav-' ing a centering point, means for holding the material to be worked upon the table, and a cutter block mounted'on the bolt and carrying a cutter and means for rotating the cutter block. A
5. The combination in a machine of the character described, of a frame having parallel arms, one of said arms fashioned to form a work table or bed, clamping screws carried by the other arm, a rotary cutter block carrying an adjustable cutter and means for rotating the block, and centering means for the said block and upon which means the cutter block is adjustably mounted, said centering means supporting the block and its attachments from the arm parallel with the table. 1
6. A frame having two parallel arms one fashioned to form a work supporting table, and the other adapted to support a rotary cutter block, means for supporting the block from said arm and centering the block, a radially adjustable cutter carried by the block, and ratchet and pawl mechanism for rotating the block.
7. A frame having two parallel arms one fashioned to form a work supporting table, and the other adapted to support a rotary cutter block, a rotary cutter block, means for supporting the block from said arm and centering the block, an adjustable cutter carried by the block, means for'shifting the cutter block and cutterrelative to said supporting means, and ratchet and pawl mechanism for rotating the block.
8. The combination of a cutter block caring the bolt at the other end from a frame, saidbolt carrying the cutter block so the latter can be rotated thereupon, and means for adjusting the block lengthwise of the said bolt.
9. The combination of a cutter block carrying an adjustable cutter and ratchet and pawl mechanism, a screw bolt with a centering point at one end and means for supporting the bolt at the other end from a frame, said bolt carrying the cutter block so the latter can be rotated thereupon, means for adjusting the block relative to the bolt, and a threaded nut above the block on the rod and engaging the block.
10. lhe combination of a cutter block cartrying an adjustable cutter and ratchet and pawl mechanism, a screw bolt with a centering point at one end and means for supporting the bolt at the other end from aframe, said bolt carrying the cutter block so the latter can be rotated thereupon, means for adjusting the block relative to the bolt, and a nut on the rod above the block engaging balls supported by the block.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK C. JOHNSON,
Witnesses:
