Be it known that I, ALBERT M. VAN WAGENEN, J r., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Display Container, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in receptacles, and it pertains more particularly to a display container for packing confectionery, medicines and similar commodities.

It is one of the primary objects of the invention to provide a display container which when opened may be positioned so that it will display its contents.

It is a further object of the invention to construct the display container in such a manner that the portion thereof which forms the cover, may be folded to display reading matter of an advertising nature.

It is a further object of the invention to construct the dis lay container in such a manner that it is ormed from a single piece of material.

With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved display container in its closed position;

Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the rear corners of the display container when in the display position;

vlar section 19, and branching from the sec Referring more specifically to the drawings, a single piece of cardboard or other suitable material is cut to provide the blank, and after said blank has beencut it is scored in order that the blank may be properly folded to form the display container. In cutting the blank, the material is shaped with two substantially right-angularly disposed sections 10 and 11. The section 10 is provided with two projecting portions 12 and 13 on one of its sides, and upon its opposite side, interposed with respect to the portions 12 and [3, there is a projecting portion 14-. This section of the blank is out along angular lines 15 to provide areas 16, each of which has a. projecting tongue 17. The sections 16 are scored, as at 22 and 23, for a purpose to be hereinafter more specifically mentioned.

The section 10 is divided by means of two lines of'scoring 24 and 25, into three areas 26, 27 and 28. The section '10 is also scored, as at 29 and 30, in parallel. lines. It will also be noted that the section 10 is provided with a tongue 31, the length of which is equal to the space between the parallel seorings 29 and 30 heretofore mentioned.

The section 11 is scored as at 32, to provide an area 33. The scoring 29 heretofore mentioned extends transversely of the section 11 to provide an area 34, and the scoring 30 heretofore mentioned extends transversely of the section 11 to provide an area 35. This construction provides an area 36 between the areas 34 and 35, which area 36 is of a width equal to the distance mentioned. The section 11 is further scored,

as at 37, to provide an area 38, and again between the score lines 29 and 30 heretofore 1 permit of a folding of the section 34 '1 inwardly of the section 10, the section 11 being permanently connected to the section 10, however, by aline of scoring 43. The area 35 is out in a circular line, as designated by the reference numeral 44, which pre- 1'1!) vides a semi-circular area 45, which is ada ted to stand vertically when the section 11 is folded upon the scored line 37.

In folding the blank to make the display container, the following operations are carried out:

With the blank lying flat, the area 14 is bent upwardly upon thescore line 11'. After this has been done, the areas 16 are bent upwardly upon the score lines 24 and 25. The tongues 17 are then bent inwardly and are engaged with the portions 20 and 21 of their respective slots in order that the areas 16 and the section 14 may be retained in vertical position. The two sections 12 and 13 are then bent upwardly upon the score lines so that they occupy a vertical position, as are also the sections 31, 33 and 40. The blank is now bent upon-the score lines 60, 61 and 43 until the tongue 31 occupies a position at X in Figure 9, and such tongue is glued or otherwise secured at this point to retain the blank in substantially rectangular form.' The twosections 26 and 28 are now bent inwardly into overlapped relation and the section 34 is folded upon the score line 29 with its section 33 positioned within the box, after which the rectangular form is folded on to the section 27 between the sections 16.

The container ,now has the appearance shown in Figure 2, with the sections 12 and 13 forming marginal flanges for the container opening to retain the contents thereof in place therein. The cover sections 35 and 38 are now moved over the container with their section 40 lying parallel to the end of the container opposite to that to which the cover is attached, as shown in Figure 8.

The container is received with the contents therein in the position just described. When it is desired to display the contents of the container, the cover is removed and folded upon the score line 37 which causes the semicircular area 35 to stand vertically as shown in Figure 2, the section 40 of thecover being inserted between the flanges 12 and 13 and the rear wall of the container,

From the foregoing, it is apparent that the 1nvention provides a display container whlch will serve the purpose of carrying candies'and the like during transportation, and, at the same time, serve to support its contents in display position.

What is claimedis:

1. A dlsplay container comprising a receptacle, means for supporting said receptacle m an inclined display pos'it1on as its supporting position, and for embracing said receptacle as its non-supporting position, said means comprising a supporting base having a plurality of side walls and an end wall, a tongue on each side wall, each side wall being scored at different points to r0- vide fold lines upon which the side wall is foldable, the end wall. havin a pair of slots related to each tongue, each ton ue being engageable in one of its pair of s ots when its side wall is folded on one of the fold lines to maintain the end wall disposed so as to bring the upper edge thereof beneath the receptacle for supporting the receptacle in the inclined position, each tongue also being engageable in the other slot of its pair of slots when the side wall is folded on the other of the fold lines to maintain the end wall in a non-supporting receptacle embracing position. a
