An adjustable bar 44 is provided with a slot 45 to receive a threaded bolt 46 carrying a thumb nut 47. The opposite end of the bolt 46 is provided with a socket 48 adapted to receive the end of the supporting bar 19. Depending from the bar 44 is a U-shaped bracket 50 provided with a set screw 51 threaded into an opening in one arm of the clamp 50 which is adapted to engage one face of the handle 52 of the saw when the handle is received within the U- shaped clamp 50 for locking the inner end of the saw in position on the bar 44;
It will be noted that the bar 19 is disposed within passages 52 in the sliding posts 18. The lower ends of these posts are slotted, as shown at 53, to receive the saw 20 and aid in guiding the saw during its cutting operation. In each of the guides 11 and 15 is located a plate 54 having upstanding stops 55 which are provided with inner fiat faces and outer curved faces, with the outer curved faces riding within the curved portion 17 of the guides 11 and 15. The plate 54 is provided with arms 56, and one of the arms is provided with aperforation into which is threaded a set screw 57 adapted to engage a bar 16 of the respective guides 11 and 15 for locking the plate in position and likewise predeterminedly positioning the stops 55 for engagement with the lower end of the posts 18 and thereby limiting the downward movement of the posts during the cutting action of the saw, which also limits the vertical movement of the saw, and will at all times maintain the cutting edge of the saw out of engagement with the base member 10.
In applying the saw, it is only necessary to insert the small end 58 of the saw through the longitudinal passages 59 formed between the vertical bars of the guides 11 and also through the slots 53 formed in the posts 18. The end'58 of the blade of the saw is received in the lower end of the supportin member 34 and locked against movement by means of the set screw 36. The handle 52 of the saw is then inserted within the U-shaped rlamp 50 and set screw 51 is tightened,
whereby the saw is rigidly supported from the bar 19. The thumb piece 25 is then manipulatedand the plunger removed from the perforation, when the block 21 is shifted longitudinally of the base member on its track 22 until the proper angle is located by means of the notch 31. The plunger is then released, when the same will fall into a perforation 26 adjacent the designation of the angle on the scale 80. a-
If it be desired to complete the entire cut through the wood, the plates 54 are lowered to their extreme position at the bottom of the guides 11 and 15' so that the upper ends of the stops 55 will engage the lower ends of the posts 18 and thus permit the saw to com plcte the out without engaging the base mem her 10. lVhatever depth of cut may be desired may be had by properly positioning the plates 54 within the guides 11 and 15, the depth of the uncut portion of the work being indicated by a scale 60 over which the plates pass in vertical adjustment.
The top plates 14 are provided with passages "61 to receive the U-shaped clips 62 secured to the upper ends of the guide posts 18. The clips are bent to form notches 63 which are engaged by complementary formed lugs 64 projecting into the passages 61. lVhen it is desired to place the saw 20 in position so that the work may be removed or replaced, it is only necessary to raise the saw together with the supporting posts 18 until the clips are forced through the passages 61 when the saw will be suspended above the work and base 10.
In making miter cuts for producing sections of a hollow post or pillar and where it requires three or more sections to complete aqsegment of said post or pillar, the block 21 is shifted until the inner edge of said blockalines with one of the marks adjacent one of the numerals 4, 6 or 8 and the plunger 24 will at this time engage one of the perforations in the scale 23. Thus when four sections are required, the block is moved to the point on the scale 23 where the inner edge of said block alines with the indicating notch adjacent the numeral 4 when the plunger 24 will drop into the perforation below the designation of 90 and the blocks will then be cut at an angle of 90. VVhen it is desired to cut an end of the block to form a six-sided figure the inner edge of the block 21 is moved until it engages the indicating line adjacent the numeral 6 and the plunger 24 will fall into the perforation below the designation 60. When the saw is operated the ends of the blocks will be cut off at an angle of 60 so that a six-sided pillar or post will be formed by such cuts. It also must be borne in mind that the other end of the work may be cut at the desired number of degrees by shifting the block 21 until the plunger 24 engages the perforation adjacent the numeral 6, 8 or 4 so that the other end of the sliding block 21 will aline with the indicating marks adjacent the respective numerals 6 or 8 and which are located to the left of the indicating mark 4.
The device permits of the use of an ordinary cross cut saw for effecting miter cuts instead of the usual miter saw and the guides will also maintain the saw in a vertical position so that a true miter is formed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A device of the character described cornprising a base, a hollow guide rigidly mounted on one side edge of the base and provided with vertical slots, a track at the other side edge of the base, a movable hollow guide provided with slots slida-bly mounted on the track, a post vertically movable in each guide, said post being provided with slots, a supporting bar mounted in the slots, clamping means at the opposite ends of the supporting bar for securing the opposite ends of a saw to the supporting bar, one of said clamping means being adjustable longitudinally of the supporting bar, said bar being slidable through the slots in the post and the saw being slidable through the slots in the guide means for locking the movable guide in one of a plurality of different positions at opposite sides of the transverse center of the base for producing varying angular cuts with the saw, plates slidably mounted in the hollow pOsts and carrying stops adapted to engage the lower end of said posts for limiting the downward movement of the posts and likewisethe downward movement of the saw, and means on the plate engageable with the hollow guide for locking the plates in various vertical positions, lugs at the upper end of each guide and a resilient clip on the slidable posts adapted to engage the lugs for retaining the posts and likewise the saw in an inoperative position.
