To all 'Lu/1,0m it may conoci/rtf Be it known that I, CHARLES Lnsrrnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mitering-machines.
One object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective mitcring machine or box adapted for all possible use for the cutting of any angle.
A further objectof my invention is to construct a mitering-niachine of this character which is provided with means for securing in position a pair of standards or saw-guides to allow of the cutting of the proper angle.
A further object of myinvention is to construct a mitering-machine of this character for cutting all possible angles and for locking the saw-guides automatically in the desired position.
A further object of my invention is to adapt the brace for' the saw-frame for keeping the saw while cutting any angle in the desired position.
A further object ot my invention is to provide,in connection with the mitering-machine, an adjustable saw-blade.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for regulating the depth of the cut desired.
My invention finally consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the` several views thereof, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved mitering-machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the operating-handle carrying the automatic stop for the guide-pins or standards. Fig. 3 is a side view df a portion of my improved adjustable saw. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of my improved machine.
l Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of one of the guide-pins or standards, showing a stop arranged therein for regulating the depth of the cut. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the pin for locking the guide-pins or standards in the desired position. Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the operating-handle for the guide-pins or standards.
Referring to the drawiu gs by reference-nu merals, l indicates a box for holding the molding plank or board l', that is provided with legs or supports 2 and a pair of sides (only one shown) which are divided into sec tions 3 4. These sections are suitably spaced apart to allow of the operation therethrough, or, in other words, for the cutting of the miter by the saw 5.
The supports or legs 2 elevate the table or box 1, so as to allow of the operation under the same and under the segment-shaped rackbar 6 of the operating-handle 7. The segment-shaped bar 6 acts as a stop for the operating-handle, and consists of a flat piece of metal having a series of notches 8 arranged on the outer edge thereof. These notches are adapted to receive the stop-piu .9,which is substantially L-shaped and operates through an Lshaped recess 10,-forrned in the support or operating-handle 7. The lower portion of the recess is closed by means of a metal plate 11, which is secured to the lower face of the support or operating-handle 7 by means of the screws 12. The lower portion of the stoppin 9 is formed with a downwardly-extending projection 13, forming a linger-catch, to allow of its operation. This downwardly-extending projection operates through an elongated slot 14, formed in the plate ll. The pin 9 is held in position iuthe notches 8, formed on the rack-bar, by means of a coil or tension spring' 15 operating against the same. This spring is arranged in the lower portion of the recess 10. (For illustration see Fig. 2 of the drawings.) The insertion of this spring in the recess and the abutting of the same against the pin 9 makes the pin spring-actuated.
The support or operating-handle '7 is pro; vided with a smaller extension 7 to allow of an easy gripping of the same at its operation. This support or operating-handle 7 is formed of an oblong strip of suitable material, which IOO is pivotally secured to the box 1 by means of the bolt 16 and nut 17 and extends outwardly on both sides of the box 1. (For illustration see Fig. 4 of the drawings.)
Secured to the upper face of the support or operating-handle 7 are the upwardly-extending saw-guides 18. These saw-guides have an elongated slot 19 formed through a portion thereof, as shown, to allow of the operation of the saw-blade 5 therethrough. These sawguides are of cylindrical shape and hollow, as shown, and are adapted to receive the stoprods 2O for regulating the depth of the cut. These stop-rods are also hollow and have the periphery thereof screw threaded, which meshes with the screw-threads formed on the inner face'of the saw-guides- 21 and 22 indicate the sides of the sawframe, the side 22 having formed integral therewith the handle 23, and these sides are bifurcated at the lower ends, in which is secured the saw-blade 5 by means of the setscrews 24.
25 denotes a strengthening rod or brace secured to the upper end of the sides 21 22, and 26 indicates an additional brace suitably secured to the sides 2l 22 at about the center thereof. The lower face of this brace or rod 2G is provided with an elongated groove 27, which is adapted to receive the upper end `of the stop-rods 2O when the saw has cut the miter sufficiently deep. Furthermore, until the further cutting of the miter has been arrested by the top of the groove 27 being brought into Contact with the ends of the stop-rods 2O the sides of the groove will prevent the wabbling or sagging to one side when the stoprods enter the groove.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings I show a sawblade having a series of apertures 28 for adjusting the saw-that is, to regulate the depth of the cut. This construction can be readily understood without further description thereof.
It will be readily apparent that by pulling the pin 9, by means of the downwardly-extending projection 13, toward the operator the same will be released from the notches in the stop-bar 6, and owing to the handle 7 being pivotally secured to the box 1 the same can be moved in the direction desired to obtain the preferred angle, and on the release of the downwardly-extending lug 13 the spring 15 will force the pivotepin 9 into the preferable notch and secure the handle 7 in the desired position. Owing to the saw-guides being secured to the upper face of the handle, the
proper angle can be readily obtained when the miter is being cut by the saw-blade.
'Ihe depth of the cut may be regulated by the adjustable sawblade and also by the stopbar 20, as when the upper ends of these bars come in contact with the brace 26 further cutting 'of the miter will be arrested thereby, and this will also serve to protect the box or table 1 from being injured by the saw.
It will be notedthat various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus vfully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a mitering-machine, the combination of a table or box adapted to receive the material to be cut, an operating-handle pivotally connected to the underneath face thereof and provided with an la-shaped opening in one end thereof, a pair of vertically-extending hollow sawguides provided with interior screw-threads, one of the said guides mounted near each end of the said handle and each provided at their lower end with an elongated slot, a saw-frame, an adjustable saw-blade secured to the said frame and operating through the said slots, a pair of screwthreaded stop-rods engaging in the said guides, abrace 2G carried by the said saw-frame provided in its underneath face with an elongated groove in which operate the said stop-rods for limiting the downward movement of the said 'saw-frame, an L-shaped stop-pin mounted in the L-shaped opening of the said handle, a plate secured to lthe underneath face of the said handle for supporting the L-shaped stoppin, a spring mounted on the said plate and Operating against the said pin for retaining the same in a locked position, a linger-catch formed integral with the said pin, and a segmental rack-bar secured to the said tableor box and provided on its outer edge with a series of notches adapted to be engaged by the said stop-pin, substantially as described.
