An object of the invention is the provision in a sign of the character described of a novel holder for the individual. sign letters, the holder and the sign letters hav ing cooperative co-engaging elements where by the individual sign letters will be securely although releasably held in desirable positions.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a sign of the character described having means for holding and displaying individual sign letters so that the sign letters cannot be removed or the positions thereof changed by an unauthorized person without injury to the sign.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a sign of the character described which affords facilities for holding sign letters or units releasably so that i11- dividual sign letters can be removed, replaced and the positions thereof changed quickly and easily when desired and then will be firmly held in adjusted positions.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of a sign embodying the invention. showing the sections of the holder in position to hold individual sign letters firmly in place,
Figure 2 is .a transverse vertical section through the structure exhibited in Figure 1, the view being taken substantially along the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the holder with the sections thereof in position to permit the sign letters or units to be associated therewith,
Figure a is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the manner of adjustably connecting the. sections of the holder together, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the sign letters or units, showing the attaching member carried by the sign unit for engaging with cooperative elements of the holder.
The improved sign comprises a holder which includes an elongated supporting bar or section 1 and an elongated clamping bar or section 2. The supporting bar 1 is adapted to be disposed vertically edgewise and has the lower edge portion thereof olf set rearwardly as indicated at 3 and formed with apertures i for the reception of screws 5 or like fastening devices, whereby the supporting bar 1 can be secured to a wall,

As best seen in Figure 5, the hanger portion 15 has a substantially U-shaped or hook-like upper end portion as indicated at 16, the bill of this hook-like portion being off-set rearwardly from the body of the sign unit and being adapted to depend between the upper edge portion of the supporting bar 1 and the body of the clamping section 2 when the hanger portion of the sign unit has been hooked over the up per edge portion of the supporting section 1 and the section 2 has been moved to clamping position as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The engagement of the web of the upper edge portion of the clamping section 2 with the h00k-like hanger portion of each sign unit will hold the latter firmly against the upper edge of the supporting section 1' when the clamping section is in the position shown in Figures 1 and 2 and the body of the sign unit or at least a portion thereof will be clamped firmly against the front face of the supporting bar 1. The clamping section 2 may be held against accidental displacement from position to hold the sign units in place by means of a padlock 17 or "i like locking device, the shackle of which extends through alined openings in forwardly extending end lugs 18 and 19 on adjacent ends of the sections 1 and 2, respectively of the holder when the section 2 is in clamping position on the section 1 of the holder as best seen in Figure 1.
Certain or all of the sign units may have the hanger portions thereof formed with projections 20 depending between the bills and the bodies of such hanger portions, as shown in Figure 5, these projections being adapted to enter notches 9 between adjacent teeth. 8 and to cooperate with theserrated upper edge portion of the section 1 to positively hold such sign units against movement along the supporting section 1 when the hanger units have been hooked over the upper edge of the latter and the section 2 is in claimping positionas shown in Figure 1. It will be manifest that only the end sign units of a series of sign units on the supporting section 1 need be provided with the locking projections 20 in order that the entire series of sign units may be held against sliding movement on the upper edge of the supporting section 1 if adjacent sign units are in contact with each other although all sign units may be and preferably are equipped with the locking projections 20. Each locking projection 20 may be an inturned end portion of the bill of the hanger portion of a sign unit as shown in Figure 5 and may span the space between the bill and the body of that hanger portion.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. Sign units may be supported on the supporting bar 1 as required to convey desirable information or to produce a desired display. The sign units will be held against vertical displacement from position on the upper edge of the supporting bar 1 by the clamping section 2 and will be held positively against movement along the upper edge of the supporting bar 1 both by reason of the clamping section of the section 2 and because of the engagement of the depending projections or teeth 20 on the hanger portions of the sign units with the teeth in the upper edge of the supporting bar 1. The sections 1 and 2 may be held against relative. move ment when the section 2 is in position to hold sign units clamped to the section 1, as illustrated in Figure 1, by means of the padlock which secures the lugs 18 and 19 at adjacent ends of the sections 1 and 2 together and unauthorized removal, replace inent orrearrangement of the sign units on the supporting bar 1 are. prevented without injury to the holder.
Obviously, the invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and I therefore consider as my own all such modifications and adaptations thereof as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a sign, a holder comprising a bar like supporting section adapted to be secured in vertically edgewise position, said supporting section having teeth in its upper edge, a clamping section having an upper edge portion adapted to embrace the upper edge portion of said supporting section, one of said sections having a guide slot and the other of said sections having a laterally turned guiding and retaining lug extendingslidably through said slot and in contact with the remote face of the slotted section, whereby separation of the two sections from each other is prevented and said clamping section can be moved bodily between position to overlap and-embrace the upper edge portion of the supporting section and position to extend above said supporting section, the upper edge of the clamping section being parallel with the upper edge of the supporting section continuously.
2. In a sign, a holder comprising a barlike supporting sec-tion adapted to be secured in vertically edgewise position, a clamping section having an upper edge portion adapted to embrace the upper edge portion of said supporting section, one of said sections having a guide slot and the other of said sections having a laterally turned guiding and retaining lug extending slidably through said slot and in contact with the remote face of the slotted section, whereby separation oi": the two sections from each other is prevented and said clamping section can be moved edgewise between posi tion to overlap and embrace the upper edge portion of the supporting section and a position in which said upper edge portion of the clamping section is disposed above and parallel to th upper edge of said support ing section, and locking means for releasably securing said clamping section in clamping position on said supportin section.
3. In asign of the character described, a bar-like supporting section having a rearwardly oii-set lower edge portion adapted to be attached to a support, a bar-like clamp ing section having a body adapted to slide close to said supporting bar, with the upper edge of the clamping bar continuously parallel to the upper edge of the supporting bar, to and from position to embrace the upper edge portion of the supporting bar, and a sign unit having a hook-like hanger portion at its upper end adapted to engage with the upper edge portion of said supporting bar and to be held in place on the supporting bar by the upper edge portion of said clamping bar.
4. In a sign of the character described, a bar-like supporting section having a rearwardly off-set lower edge portion adapted to be attached to a support, a bar-like clamping section having a body adapted to slide close to said supporting bar to and from position to embrace the upper edge portion of the supporting bar, a sign unit having a hook-like hanger portion at its upper end adapted to engage with the upper edge portion of said supporting bar and to be held in place on the supporting bar by the upper edge portion of said clamping bar, and a pair of laterally extending lugs respectively on adjacent ends of said supporting and clamping bars, said lugs being apertured for the reception of the shackle of a padlock or like device for locking said clamping bar in clamping posit-ion on said supporting bar.

In a sign of the character described, a holder comprising a bar-like supporting section adapted to be secured to a support and to be disposed in vertically edgewise position, a clamping section having a body adapted to slide against the rear face of said supporting section and having a channel shaped upper edge portion movable with the body of the clamping section to and from position to embrace the upper edge portion of the supporting section, said; clamping section having spaced inclined slots in the body thereof, and rearwardly extending guiding and retaining lugs struck from said supporting section and working in said slots, each of said guiding and retaining lugs having oppositely bent furcations engaging with the rear face of said clamping section to hold said lug against withdrawal from the slot through which the lug extends.
6. A sign of the character described comprising a bar-like supporting section adapted to be disposed vertically edgewise and having teeth in its upper edge, a sign unit having a hook shaped hanger portion at its upper end adapted to be hooked over the upper edge portion of said supporting section, said hanger portion of the sign unit having a pendant tooth for engaging with teeth of the supporting section, and a clamping section adjustably connected with said supporting section and movable to and from position to clamp the hanger portion of said sign unit'to the upper edge of said supporting section.
