W I ATTORNEY-S I Patented October 18, 1904.
UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM GRISWOLD FILSON, OF NEW CUMBERLAND, WEST VIRGINIA.
SHADE-BRACKET HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,561, dated October 18, 1904.
Application filed October 20,1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM GRIswoLI) FILsoN,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Cumberland, in the county of Hancock and State of West Virginia, have invent ed new and useful Improvements in Shade- Bracket Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device adapted to be secured to a window-frame and having means for attaching thereto the usual form of bracket used to support a window-shade fixture.
dicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View showing two devices embodying my invention as in use supporting a shade. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device closed on a shade-bracket. Fig. 3 is a similar View with the device open, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 1 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, the invention comprises a supporting member or plate 6, having right-angle bends 7 8 at its ends, which bends have end portions 9 and 10, constituting flanges and extending in opposite directions. The flanges are provided with apertures to receive fasteningscrews 11 or similar means for securing the device to the window-casing at any convenient place'adjacent to the window. I
The lower edge of the plate 6 has an extension 12, preferably integral, that is projected forward and then upward for ashort distance- A plate 13 substantially U-shaped in transverse section is pivoted at its end 1 1 to the end of the plate 6 adjacent the bend 7. This movable plate 13 is normally held with the 5 upper edge of the plate 6 lying in the top of Serial No. 177,740. (No model.) 7
its U-shaped bend 15, asindicated in Figs. 3
and 4,.and is retained in such position by an disposed at the probable limits of location of the shade-bracket holder, as indicated in Fig. 1. The device is then opened by disengaging the spring-hooks 16 and 17 and the plate 13 is swung upward. The bracket 20 has its web portion 2linserted in one of the openings 19 in the 'plate 12, and when'the member 13 is swung to the closed position it will cause the 'web of the holder to be engaged by the upper plate at the opening 18 therein opposite the opening in which it lies in the plate 12. Upon the hooks 16 and 17 now engaging the bracket will be securely locked in the holder. It will be seen from Fig. 4, as well as the other views, that the flange portion 22 of the bracket will be secured between the face of the plate 6 and the opposite portions of the members 12 and 13. The series of openings in the plates 12 and 13 will provide for a considerable range of adjustment to accommodate different lengths of shade-rollers. When it is desired to remove the shade and bracket for any reason, by merely disengaging the hook members 16 and 17 and swinging the movable member 13 upward the bracket will be free-to be removed and may be again inserted or another one put in its place without in any wise marring the frame of the window, the bracketholder being permanently attached to said frame.
Having thus described my invention, I claim opposite the first engaging member and movable relatively thereto.
2. The combination of a supporting-plate, provided with a serrated engaging member rigid therewith, a second engaging member pivoted to the supporting-plate opposite the first engaging member and movable relatively to the latter, means for locking the movable member, and a shade-bracket adapted to be held by said engaging member.
3. The combination of a supporting member, provided with a strip rigid therewith and having an upwardly-projecting portion, a second strip movably attached to the supporting member and having a portion normally disposed opposite to and extending toward said upwardly-extended portion of the first-mentioned strip, each of said strips having serrations and openings in its edge between the serrations, the second strip being movable toward and from the first-mentioned strip, and a hooked portion projecting from each strip, said hooked portions being designed to interlock, substantially as set forth.
4. In a shade-bracket holder, the combination of a stationary member, a serrated member pivoted to the stationary member, and elongated serrations on both said members, of substantially the thickness of said members projecting toward each other, said pivot acting to guide the pivoted member and bring each serration on the pivoted member into position directly opposite a serration on the stationary member.
5. In a shade-bracket holder the combination of a stationary member, a serrated pivoted member movable relatively to the stationary member, and having a hooked extended portion and a locking-hook carried by the pivoted member and designed to engage with the hooked extended portion of the stationary member.
6. The combination of a supporting-plate, a shade-bracket, and means for holding the shade-bracket to the sup 'iorting-plate, comprising a member on said supporting-plate having teeth or serrations, and a second member arranged opposite the first member, said second member also having teeth or serrations, the serrations of said second member extending toward the serrations of the first member, said shade-bracket being adapted to beheld between any two serrations on the two members.
7 A device of the character described, comprisinga plate having an offset flange portion at each end, the plate having a portion projecting forwardly and then upwardly from one edge, and having serrations in the edge of said portion, a strip substantially U-shaped in transverse section, pivoted at one end to an end portion of the first-named plate and having an inverted-Usliaped portion normally engaging the upper edge of said first-named plate, a hooked extension on the free end of the pivoted plate, and a hooked extension on the upwardly-extending portion of said firstmentioned plate, said hooked extensions being adapted to engage one with the other, and said movable member having serrations in one longitudinal edge, opposite the serrations in the fixed member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence oi two subscribing witnesses.
HIRAM GRISVVOLD FILSON.
