Description

W."D.- FENNIMORE. DISPLAY CARD. APPLICATION FILED APR: 12, '1920.
Patented June 27, 1922.
- INVENTOR ESS WA-rsoN Dianmmorae o 1% BY A TTORNE Y UNETEE STATES PATENT FFHQE.
DISPLAY CARD.
Application filed April 12, 1920.
V moan, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have made a new and useful invention-to wit, Improvements in Display Cards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates particularly to clips attachable to display cards, and has among its objects the detachable attachment of merchandise to display cards. An-
other object is to provide a clip that is ornamental, that will hold the merchandise firmly and securely upon the display cards;
yet in such a manner that the merchandise may be easily removed and restored to the display cards. Other objects and advantages will appear as this description progresses.
This invention is disclosed particularly in its use for attaching ophthalmic mountings, spectacles, goggle or eyeglasses to dis play cards. It has been the practice heretotore to display such merchandise by sewing it to the card or by means of conventional paper fasteners and the like engaging the article and penetrating through the show card. Such means are undesirable because they do not firmly secure the articles to the card, neither do they provide a means for ready detachment and return of the article to the card, with the result that the article when removed from the card usually is not returned thereto, or is returned in a bunglesome and unsightly manner, defeating the purpose of the display, which is to present the merchandise in an attractive way.
In this specification and the annexed drawings, the invention is illustrated in the form considered to be the best, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such form, because it may be embodied in other forms; and it is also to be understood that in and by the claims following the description, it is desired to cover the invention in whatsoever form it may be embodied.
In the accompanying one sheet of drawings. v
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a fragmentary portion of a display card having a pair of goggles attached thereto in accordance with this invention. r
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail in side eleva- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion of the display clip, installed in a display card shown in cross section.
Fig. 3 is a modification of the same shown in perspective. I Fig. l is a further modificationsimilarl illustrated.
In detail the construction illustrated in the drawings includes a single strip of sheet metal, preferably medium hard brass polished or plated to give the necessary and desirable finish. This strip is punched and shaped in dies, or it may be sheared and bent from a strip or ribbon of metal, as practice may dictate.
One end of the strip is rounded as at 1, and curved or bent to form the retaining hook 2 curved outward from the plane 3. From the plane shoulder 3 the loop 4 is bent downward and returns tothe plane 5. From the plane 5 the second shoulder loop 6 is bent downward the remainder of the strip returning across the plane 5. in the form of the fiat terminal 7, see Fig. 2. From the dies the clip is delivered with the terminal end 7 extending outward, substantially parallel with the planes 3 and 5, from the loop bend 6. In this shape the end 8 is inserted through a slot 9 formed through the di play card 10, the slot being a close fit to the width and the gauge of the strips forming the clip. The terminal 7 is pushed through the face of the display card until the bend 6 has encountered the edge of the slot 9. The hook 2 is then swung downward until the plane 5 enters the slot; the hook 2 is then restored to the horizontal position forcing the plane 5 into the thickness of the card, which then lies between the loops 4 and 6. The terminal 7 is then bent back upon the loop 6 until its end 8 contacts with the back of the display card 10 as in Fig. 2. In this position the display clip is firmly clinched in the display card and cannot be displaced from position except by again bending back the terminal 7 in the position shown in Fig. a. The loop 6 is purposely made longer than the loop 4 so that the face of the display card 10 may be laid upon a surface plate or other suitable means to permit the loop 6 to close up tightly by a blow from a mallet or other suitable instrument, to fiX the clip into the card as shown in Fig. 2. It is desirable that the clinched portion of the clip lie as nearly flush with 110 the rear face of the display card 10 as possible. After the clips are all in position in Patented June 27, 1922;
same up to the bend 12, from this point the terminal 7 is bifurcated to the end 8 so that the shoulder terminals 13 and 14 may be bent in opposite directions as shown in Fig. 3
to clinch the clip onto the display board.
One of the advantages of this form is that the two terminals 13 and 14 will lie closer to the rear face of the display card, but this form is slightly more costly to produce and to install upon the display cards. The modification shown in Fig. 4 is intended for the display of heavier and more bulky articles of merchandise from that illustrated, such as mechanics tools and the like. In this form the plane 5 isleft in the form of a free curve 15 and the loop 16 is not bent flat as in the case of the loop 6 and the terminal 17 is bent forward until the end 18 contacts with the rear surface of the display card. The hook 20 is given any desirable shape best calculated to hold the particular article of merchandise to be displayed. By reason of the spring like formation of the terminal 17 the display clip will permit the resilient action of the spring in retaining the displayed article against the surface of the display card or board.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- In combination with a perforated display card of an article supporting clip therefor, comprising a strip of flat metal having a resilient hook bent on one end thereof and adapted to removably support an article between it and said card; an intermediate portion bent at right angles to said strip to form a shoulder, rebent to a plane substantially in alignment with said strip and adapted to pass through the perforated card and having the end thereof bent at substantially right angles to said aligned portions to form a shoulder, and disposed on opposite sides of the aligned portions of said strip the space between said shoulders forming a socket adapted to receive a cross section of said display card.
In testimony whereof,'l have hereunto set my hand at San Francisco, California,
this Qith day of March, 1920. p
