TRAY FOB MACHINE POSTING.
Application filed June 15, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY C. YEISER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, and WILLIAM A. RINGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Tray for Machine Posting, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention comprehends a novel construction and arrangement of a tray for machine posting.
It further comprehends a novel tray for machine posting wherein the compressor plates are mounted and locked in position in a novel manner.
It further comprehends a novel construction of a tray wherein one side is adjustable and wherein the center portion can be shifted to accommodate di'fierent sized sheets.
It further comprehends a novel construction of compressor plates which are permitted to move upwardly and which are locked in position by eccentric members and the plate carriers are held in position by the pressure of a clamp and channel against the flanges of a supporting channel.
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more fully appear in the detailed description.
For the purpose of illustrating our invention, we have shown in the accompanying drawings embodiments thereof which are at present preferred by us, since these embodiments will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which our invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that our invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Referring to the drawings. I
1 designates the bottom of the tray to which are connected in any desired manner, for example, by welding, the foot angles 2, which are preferably provided with the rubber feet 3. The tray bottom 1 is preferably made of sheet-metal and is provided with a depressed portion 4-, see more particularly Figure 5, thereby providing supporting lateral extensions 5. One lateral extension 5 has a portion directed upwardly, as indicated at 6, and connected with the tray side 7 which at its lower end is deflected inwardly and upwardly. The opposite lateral extension 5 forms a table and extends down- 7 wardly to contribute to form a side 8 which at its lower end is deflected inwardly and upwardly.
9 designates a side extension body inthe form of side plates 10 which are connected to a front platell. ableon the table 5 and are offset, as at 12, see more particularly Figure 1'. One'of the sides 10 co-operates with aside angle 13 secured to one of the tray ends 14 by means of fastening devices 13 of any desired character. The latch 16 is pivotally carried by a side plate 10 and is adapted to interlock with the walls of one of the recesses 17 in the upwardly extending face of theside angle 13.
18 designates a stop which limits the inward movement of its respective side plate 10 and the latch-carrying plate 10 is prefer- The plates 10 are sliding of the side extension body. Brace angles 20 are preferably welded or otherwise connected with the side plates and the front plate 11, in order to provide for the proper rigidity of the side extension body. Each end-14 is provided with a handle 15 and one end is provided with a label holder 16. 21 designates a center slide, the upper face of which is depressed in order to receive the rod 22, the ends of which are carried by the upturned portions 23 of a center channel 24.
The slide 21 is in the form of an inverted U-shaped channel member which is slidable within the center channel 24, the construction and arrangement of which will be best understood by reference to Figures 2, 7 and 8. This center channel 24 is provided with a bottom plate from which extends upwardly the sides 25 which merge into lateral extensions 26 which are directed inwardly toward each other. Two of the slides 21 are employed which have the function of follower blocks and to each of these slides are welded or otherwise secured two longitudinally extending plates 27 which are spaced from each other and connected with a top plate 28 welded or otherwise secured to the spaced plates 27. This top plate 28 at one end is deflected upon itself to form a sleeve 29 to receive a brace wire 3O,v the sides of which diverge upwardly and outwardly and are connected by a cross piece which is movable in the guides 31 secured in any desired manner to a compressor plate 82.
33 designates an eccentric fulcrumed at 34 on a compressor plate 32 and provided with an actuating handle 25. The eccentric 33 has its outer periphery grooved, as inclicate'd at 36, in order that the cross bar of the brace wire will be received therein, as will be best understood by reference to Figure 4. Two compressor plates 32 are em ployed and each of such compressor plates is provided with a grasping handle 37. The top plate 28 of a slide 21 is deflected at its inner end to form a sleeve 38, see Figure 7, and the lower end of a compressor plate is deflected to form the sleeves 39, said sleeves being adapted to receive a rod 40, see Figure 2.- Each slide is adjustable along the center channel and is adapted to be locked in its adjusted position. For this purpose, I provide for each slide an upwardly extending screw 46 which passes through an inverted U-shaped cross bar 42 and through a spacing collar 43. The U-shaped cross bar 42 isin the form of a channel, the sides of which are recessed, as indicated at 44, see Figure 8, so that it will rest upon the flanges 26 of the center channel but will not contact with the top plate 28. Each screw 46 is provided with a wing nut which bears against .the top face of its respective cross bar 42. In this manner, it will be apparent that each slide can be readily locked in the position to which it has been adjusted.
It is advantageousiin case the side extension body 9 is drawn outwardly to have the center channel and its adjuncts centrally positioned or centered within the tray. For this purpose I provide, as best seen in Figure 3, the members 47 in the form of channels which together with the adusting strips 48, 49 and 50 form a false bottom. The adjusting strips 48, 49 and 50 are also in the form of channel members and may be of different dimensions.
The bottom of the tray is preferably pro vided with longitudinally extending strips of material 51 such as, for example, cork, which will tend to prevent sliding or slipping of the sheets which are supported thereon. If desired, the strip of suitable material such as, for example, felt, as shown at 52, see Figure 9, may be employed to serve as a filler, the cross bar 42 being recessed to receive such strip.
The operation of the tray will be readily apparent to those skilled in this art.
The slides can be adjusted in accordance with conditions and requirements met with in practice and the compressor plates can be locked firmly against the articles or sheets located therebetween by means of the eccentric cam mechanisms on the faces of the plates. When one cam mechanism is un locked its compressor plate can be swung rearwardly or forwardly on its hinged lower end. One side of the tray can be adjusted so that the tray will accommodate articles or sheets of different widths and the center portion can be shifted owing to the provision of the adjusting members so that the tray will accommodate different sized sheets.
When a handle 35 is moved into its released position, the eccentric co-operates with a stop 53, see Figure 3, said stop having a curved contact face to conform to the periphery of the eccentric.
A. tray for ledger posting constructed in accordance with our present invention can be supported on any desired type of stand when in use or can be assembled in a cabinet, and at the end of the days work, the tray and its contents can be removed and locked up in a safe, if so desired.
The brace members are preferably in the form of spring wires so that they are resiliently locked in place and their upper portions will be moved resiliently toward each other so that a resilient clamping action is obtained against the cards, ledger sheets or other papers which are being posted. hen the compressor plates are in locked position, it will be apparent that the articles filed are firmly locked with respect to the tray so that there is no possibility of sheets becoming misplaced or falling out of the tray in case the tray should be overturned.
The tray can be readily adjusted to receive sheets of different sizes as the compressor plates and their adjuncts are both longitudinally and laterally adjustable with respect to the tray.
The parts can be economically manufactured from sheet metal and a very strong and rigid construction is produced.
It will nowbe apparent that wehave devised a new and useful tray for machine posting which embodies the featuresof advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while we have, in the present instance, shown and described embodiments thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that these embodiments are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
