B. JOHANSON JAR GRIPPING LIFTER Filed April 18, 1922 I X! EXT 0R. BJIUHAN s n N ATTORNEY.
Patented Feb. 23, 1926.
UNITED STATES BERGER JOHAN'SON, 0F SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
JAR-GRIPIEING LIFTER.
Application filed April 18, 1322 Serial No. 555,485.
scalding or burning the hands or the op--' erator, and without danger of crushing the neck of the jar the device being, provided with means for limiting the closing thrust upon the jaws and for minimizing the pres sure when contact with the neck is established between the jaws and the jar neck.
l'Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain new and useful constructions, combinations and arrange-- ments or" parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which The figure is a side elevation.
Referring to the accompanying drawings A designates one oi? the levers of the device and B the other lever. The two levers are pivotally connected together by means of the rivet C, so as to provide relatively long handles l) and ii Each of the levers is formed at tially L-shaped jaw F. Each lever is preterably formed of flat strip stock and the forward end portion providing the jaw ll is twisted upon the shank oi: the handle for weirdly of the pivot, the twist being substantially one-quarter of a turn, or about 90 degrees, By this air igement the flat sides of the stock extending along the jaws confront each other.
The lever B is deflected atthe point of the twist 7) thereof, so as to provide a sloping or inclined stop G, which is engaged by the edge portion H of the lever A, and which not only provides means for limiting the closing action of the jaws toward each other upon the neck of the jar to be handled, but which also provides n'ieans for reducing the actual pressure exerted upon the neck of the glass jar. After the edge portion H engages the sl ping stop G a slight movement ofthe jaws toward each other is permitted, as continued pressure upon the handles will force the ecge portion H along the sloping stop G, against the lateral tension or resistance offered by the stock oiithe metal.
By this arrangement it is impossible to apply a crushing pressure on the heated neck ota' glass jar, so that the device is designed in such manner as to protect the fruit and vegetable jars against destruction due to a sudden application of gripping pressure upon opposite sides of the jar neck;
The terminal port-ions of each of the jaws is equipped with a curved jaw piece I, designed to fit the jar neck. This piece I may be secured by a rivet or welding, or other like fastening means, or may be secured pivotally, as shown in dotted lines, so that the device may be employed for handling jars by placing the device at right angles thereto, instead or over the jar, as is required in most cases;
Having described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A jar gripping lifter, comprising a pair otlevers, each lever having a handle and an L-shaped forward portion having a or gripping jaw eachv lever being made from bar material having flat inner sides, the handles being pivoted to each other rearwardly of the L-shaped portions thereof, each L-shaped portion being connected to its handle by a twisted portion providing an inwardly defiected edge, the deflect-ed edges facing each other and being adapted to abut against each other to limit the closing thrust of the L-, shaped portions on each other, whereby thepressure exerted on a jar by the closing of said aws upon it will be limited by the abut ment of said deflected edges.
Signed by me at Springfield, Mass.
