"r FFICE SOL GUTTERMAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK;v
DSPLAY :PAD FOR BARRETTES AND THE v Application filed February Be it known that I, SoiJ GUTTERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, borough of Brooklyn, in the Stat-e ofv `New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Display Pads for Barrettes and the like, of which the following is a specification. K
The objects of this invention are to provide a pa-d upon which sample barrettes can be ydisplayed to the best possible advantage and which will protect and cushion the barrettes when a number of the pads are laid upon one another; to hold each barrette properly positioned upon the pad to display it, and to preventit from turning or slip-l ping out of suoli position; to provide for this purpose a stifi'ened holding strip upon the soft cushioning lsurface of a stiffened pad body, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out by the following description:
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is face View of my improved pad, with a barrette in place thereon, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line Q-fQ., Figure l, showing how the stiffened holding strip presses the barrette into the soft cushion layer to prevent it from twisting or turning out of proper display position.
ln the specific embodiment of the invention shown in said drawings, l indicates a barrette display pad of my improved construction, and 2 a barrette displayed thereon.
The body of the pad consists of a backing 3 of textile material which has been specially starched to impart stiffness without rigidity, an interior cushion layer fl; of cotton wadding or the like, and a facing 5 of soft and preferably silky texture loose enough to permit the full cushioning effect of the inner layer 4. The said backing 3, inner cushion layer t and facing 5 are connected at their peripheral edges by a suitable binding 6, which is shown as of stitching although `it might be of any other well-known kind adapted to hold the backing, facing and intermediate cushion layer together. lt will be understood, however, tha said backing, facing and cushion layer are preferably connected only at their edges or marginal portions, so as to leave them free from one another at their portions upon which the 2i, 1925. serial No. 10,834.
barrettes rest and thus secure the most` efiective cushioning of said barrettes.` The back ing Sis stiff in comparison with the cushion layer d and facing 5, without being in any sense rigid, andl is intended to retain the pad in smooth outspi'ead extended position, which it effectively does in my improved construction# ,Obviously the pad may be of any vother shape than the plain rectangular V,form shown, if desired, and may be of any required size.
Upon the front ofV the body of the pad thus described is a holding strip A7, which is shown Vextending longitudinally and inedially of the pad, although there is no in-` tention to restrict Vto this particular posi-'- tio-n. lt is sufficient for the holding strip to extend across any suitable portion'of the pad body where the backing, facing and inner cushion layer are free `from one another as already explained and` thus adapted to support a barrette. The holding strip itself is secured only to the facing 5, so
that the described freedom of the facing with respect to the cushion layer and backing is not impaired, and preferably thisrsecuring is by transverse lines of stitching .8, 8 which are suitably spaced from each kother to receive between themselves the pin shaft` S) of the barrette 2 and holdthe bar rette against undue movement. The body l0 of the barrette sinks into4 the soft cushioning body of the pad, as in use it does into the hair of a wearer, and is thereby further held against displacement or lmoving out of its proper displaying position.
ltl is an important feature of theholding strip T that it is stiff, in the sense that the backing l is stiti, and thus said holding strip cooperates with said backing in holding the pad extended or outspread with the barrettes proi'zerly spaced and displayed. Preferably this stifiening of the holdingl strip is accomplished by making it of an inner thickness il of the saine material as the backing 3 and an outer thickness l2 of the sameinaterial as the facing 5, the two thickneses being held together by binding 1S along the opposite longitudinal edges of the holding strip, but any other suitable construction might( be employed. Preferably the said binding 13 consists of a coarse oblique stitching, as shown, whereby the margins of the holding strip are thickened `and roughened so that better frictional engagement with the pin shaft of the barrette is secured to hold it against any tendency to slip ont of place.
lihile the invention is described as abarrette display pad, it willbeunderstoodpthat it can be employed for the display of any other similar articles to which it may be adapted, and no restriction of the invention is intendedV herein except as may be required by the following claims When construed in the light of the priorart.
Having thus described the inventiomwhat l claim is: i f
l. A display pad comprising va body consisting of a soft Aflexible facing and a relatively stiff textile backing` anda cushion la'j'er between said facing` and baclino` and a holding strip secured to said Vfacing upon a portion yof the body Where the facing and liacl-:ing and cushion vlayer are free' from one another transversely of the path VWhereby the cushioning effect of the cushionlayer upon an article mounted o-n the pad is independent of the attachment ofthe holding strip.
2. A display pad comprising' a body having a soft flexible f cing and a cushion layer back of said facing, and aholding kstrip secured to said facing upon a portion of-said-bodyvivhere the facing and cushion layerv are free from each other transversely of tliepad, whereby the cushioning effect of the cushion layer upon an article mounted on the pad is'independent of the attachnient of the holding strip.
8. A display` pad as claimed in claim 2, in Which the holding strip is comparatively stiff with respect to the facing and tends t-'- hold it extended.
et. 'display pad as claimed in claim l, inii'liich the holding strip is relatively stiff with respect to the facing andcooperates with the backing to hold the' pad extended.
A display pad comprising a body With SOL GUTTER-MAN,
a soft cushion frontend a holding strip i 'on said fronthaving a marginal edge of
