Description

UNITED STATES PATENT CEEIGE.
JAMES A. DUNNING, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA. i
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,384, dated December 1, 1574; application n'led October 21, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMEsA. DUNNING, oi' the city of Wheeling; and State of Vest Virginia, have invented a Hinge, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a hinge lnade of four pieces-namely, one large strap or plate to be attached to the door or gate, two smaller straps or plates to be attached to the doorframe or post, and a pintle or bolt to collncct the above parts together, and about which they move when the door or gate is opened or shut-and has for its object a hinge that can be used for either a right or a lett one 5 that can be used as the ordinary straphin ge; that can be attached to two sides of a frame or post; that will admit oi' the door or gate being so attached to the post that itV will open on either side, all of which uses can be made of the one and the same hinge.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l, A represents the large strap or plate 5 B and C,
the smaller straps or plates, respectively; and D, the pintle or bolt connecting them together by passing through corresponding circular apertures in each. Fig. 2 shows an edge view.
The distinguishing characteristic of this hinge is, the number of ways a door or gate can be attached to the frame or post, and this because of its peculiar construction.
I claim- The combination of the central strap A, with the pintle-eye turned up out of its plane, and the two end straps B C, secured to the common pintle, so as to make an entire rota tion thereon, thus allowing the hinge to be used both as a right and left, and permitting either 4or both the straps B and C to be secured upon either the face or` the edge of the gate-post at will, all as set forth.
JAMES A. DUNNING. Witnesses:
J. B. MGLURE, b. M. HOWARD.
