Description

Feb. 9 1926.
c. L. HAMILTON MASSAGE APPARATUS Filed August 21, 1922 f8 yi ammum A Iron/frs Patented Feb. 9, 1926.
UNITED STATES CHARLES LESTER HAMILTON, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
MASSAGE APPARATUS.
Application led August 21, 1922. Serial No. 583,280.
T all whom t may concern: Be it known that I, CHARLES L. HAMTL- TON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented new and useful 'Improvements in Massage Apparatus, of which the-following is a: full, clear. and exact description. 4
This invention relates to massage apparatus. l
The general object of the invention is the provision of simple and efficient apparatus` for treating the spine to adjust the vertebrae or correct structural defects.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a massage apparatus for treating the spine provided with means so that the patient may operate the same without any assistance. l
These objects are accomplished by providing a pluralityof grooved rollers of different sizes shaped to straddle the spine, rotatably mounting the rollers in spaced relation to one another., and providing means for guiding the movement of the rollers so that they maybe moved lengthwise of the spine.-
These and other objects of the invention will be more clearly understood from the following detailed description andv accompanyiiig drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the appai'atus, showing a patient positioned thereon;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the massage apparatus;
Figure 3 Figure 2;
Figure 4 Figure 2. 40 Referring to the above-mentioned drawings, a table is supported on cross pieces 11 and 12. Extending parallel with the table 10 and carried by the cross-pieces 11/ and 12 are two hand1iails y13 and 14. Mounted on the table 12 and extending lengthwise of the same are side pieces 15 and 16.' T hese side'pieces are provided with grooves 17 and 18 extending respectively lengthwise of their inner faces. i
A plurality ofprollers19 and 20 of different sizes provided with trunnions 21 are rois a sectionalong the line 3 3,
is a section along ther line 4-4,
tatably mounted in bearingsy 27 provided inthe sideplates 22 and 23. The side plates 22 and 23f'have attached thereto ins 24 and 25,`
respectively, which fit into t e grooves 17 spine.
and 18 formed -in the side pieces 15 and 16. The rollers 19 and 2O` all 'seat on the table 10, consequently,`the bearings 27 are not positioned in line in the side plates 22 and 23 but are so arranged as to allow the lower edges of the rollers to lie in a straight line. In constructing the rollers 19 and 20, members 26 having circumferential grooves 28 and trunnions 21 are provided. Rubber rings 29 are mounted on the member 26, one on each side of the groove 28. Thus a roller is formed having a circumferential groove which conforms to the cross contour of the The rollers 19 and 2O of different sizes are arranged alternately large and small. /This arrangement conforms to the contour of the back. Kp
In usin this apparatus,- the patient 30 positions' imself on .the rollers with the spine resting in the groove 28. He then grips the'side rails 13 and 14 and rocks back and forth, causing the rollers 19 and 20. to travel back and forth on the table 10. Thus it will be seen that the rollers 19 and 20 travel along the spine, tending to force the vertebrae into proper position and massaging the musclesand tissues.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes va practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated since manifestly the saine can be considerably varied without departing from the spirit ofthe invention as defined in the appended claims.
Claims:
1. A massage device of the class described, comprising a plurality of grooved rollers ofV different sizes and alternately arranged, said rollers being shaped to straddle the spine, means for retaining the rollers in spaced relation to one another, a table on 'which said rollers travel, and means attached to the table'for guiding the movement of said rollers lon said table.
.A 2. A massage device ,of the class described, comprising a plurality of grooved rollers shaped to straddle the vertebrae of the spine, said rollers being of different sizes and alternately arranged, said rollers being rotatably mounted in a frame so that their lower points are in a straight line, means for retaining the rollers in spaced relation, a table serving as a trackon which said rollers travel, means attached to the table 110 for guiding lthe movement', of said rollers, and means attached to the table 'for use by `the patient 'tou move himself along on'l thel rollers. v .v
*3.A In a device of the character described,
comBr'ising a table provided with side members and -hand rails, the side railsben provided 'withslongitndinalP grooves, a iqing frarn having projections engaging the@ grooves ofmsald side members, and@ a plu- 10 and alternately arrange CHARLES, LESTER' HAMILTON.
