To all "2072 0772, it may concern Be it known that I, CARL Pn'rnas, a oitizen of the United States, residing at Sherburn, in the county of Martinand State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Door-Locks and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a lock preferably of reciprocating bolt or latch type, and while the lock may have various applications, it is particularly designed to be used in a swinging door with the latch. reciprocating in the edge of the door and handles disposed at each side of the door, the keeper for the lock being disposed in the door frame.
It is an object of this invention to provide a door lock comprising three separate units which are readily insertable in and removable from the door and to which all parts of the lock are attached so that there are no loose parts.
It is also an object of this invention to provide lock of simple construction comprising a reciprocating latch and oscillating han-,
dles movable in planes substantially at right angles to the line of movement of said latch for operating the latch, together with means disposed at each side of the lock for preventing movement of said handles and latch,
" thus locking the same in position.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a vlock comprising spaced plates adapted to be attached ateach side of the door, which plates carry bail-shaped or U shaped. grip handles movable in planes at right angles to said plates, the ends of which project through said plates so as to be disposed therebetween and having an operating connection with a reciprocating member between said plates which, in turn, is coil nected to said latch, whereby movement of said handles operates said latch.
It is afurther object of the invention to provide such a look as above set forth, the plate on the inside of the door carrying handle-operated means for locking the handles and latch against movement and the plate at the outer side of the door carrying key-operated means for locking said handles and latch against movement.
It is more specifically an object of the invention to provide a lock comprising spaced plates adapted to be secured at each side of the door, which plates. carry substantially U-shaped housings or guards in which are mounted swinging U-shaped grip handles moving in planes at right angles to said plates, the inner ends of said handles projeoting between said plates and having bars connecting their ends, which bars have projecting means at one side," respectively, en' gaging grooves formed in each side of a vertically reciprocating member disposed between said plates, said member having an.

Referring to the drawings, a'portion of 7 an ordinary swinging door, such as corn monly used in dwellings, is shown as l. The edge of the door has a plate 2 secured thereto by spaced screws, which plate may, in practice, be set into the door. Said plate 2' has a sleeve 3 projecting tl'ierefrom forming a guiding means for the bolt or latch 4 of the lock, which latch has an inwardly projecting stem 7 slotted to embrace a pin v5 extending through said sleeve and forinv ing the abutment for one end of a coiled compression spring 6, the other end of which presses against the bolt 4t. The bolt 4 is thus spring-pressed outwardly. The stem 7 is slotted at its inner portion and traversed llO by a pin 8, a recess thus being formed between said pin and the body of said stem which is adapted to receive a depending hook forming one arm of a bell crank lever 9 to be later described, said bell crank lever, when operated being adapted to drawthe latch or bolt 4t inwardly.

The plates 10 and 11 are 1 provided with slots through which project the upper and lower ends of the handles'l5, said handles at' their upper ends being provided= with depending tongues 17' forming stop memliers' limiting the inward movements of said upper ends whensaid handles are locked about the bolts 14. The inner ends of each handle 15-are connected by bars 18 rigidly secured thereto, one of said bars 18 being provided witha plate 19 having laterally extending slots 20 therein'through whichpass the boltsattaching it to the plate 18 so that the same can be adj ust'ed'to different positions with respect to plate 18 for a purpose to be later described. Each bar 18 has a pin 21 projecting inwardly therefrom, whichpins are received in and move in slots 22 formed oneachside ofa vertical ly reciprocatin'g'plate member 23-. The plate v member 23 is thus disposed between the bars 18 and is provided adjacent its top and bottom ends with pins 24 projecting-at each side and .which travel in vertical slots formed in the sides of yoke- shaped clips 25 and 26, respectively. The yoke 26 is formed with a to) embracin a screw 27 extending between the plate 11 and an upstanding projection attached to sleeve 12 and said yoke is provided with a slot 28 in which is" disposed a revoluble nut 29 engaging the screw 27 so that the yoke clip 26 can be moved transversely between the plates 10 and 11. The yoke clip 25 is similarly provided with a loop at its upper portion to that shown and described for the yoke clip 26, which'adjustingineans is shown in vFig. 1. The lower end or member 23 is formed with an aperture 31 and one arm of the bell crank lever 9 is provided with a diagonal and downwardly extending slot 32 which embraces the portion of member 23. below the aperture 31, 'aportion of said arm-thus" passing through the aperture 31,, as'clearly shown in'Figs. land 3. The bell crank 9. is pivoted on the member 33 extending between the platell and the projection upstanding from sleeve 12, which member has ahead countersunk in plate 11 and hasits other end thread-ed into-the said projection and equipped with a lock nut.
The plate 11 is the plate which will be disposed-on the outer side of the door and the same has attached'thereto a lockcasing 34: fro'm'the lower side of whichoperates a' lock bolt 3 The casing 34acontains' any suitable and simple form of mechanism for projecting and retracting the bolt 35 by means of a' key inserted through the hey sleeve 36,"which means is not shown. The upper portion of handle 15 which extends througl'i the plate 11 is provided with a slot 37 and the upper portion of the handle" 15 whichprojects'through plate 10 is'also provided with a slot 38', one side or which is formed by the inner edge of the top pore tion of member 19. As shown in Fig. 1, when the handles15 are disposed in their inner positions, the slots 37 and 38 are in alinement and if a key be inserted in the key slot in sleeve 36 and turned the bolt 35 will be projected into the slots 37 and 38' and the handles 15 will thus be locked against movement and it will be impossible to operate the latch bolt 4'. It is possible to dispose the plates 10 and 11 at different distances apart to suit various thicknesses of doors and when this'is done the plate 10 is'mov'ed relatively to plate 11. In order to'then have the slot 38register with slot 37 the member 19 can be adjusted laterally, owing" to the slots 20, so that its upper inner edge will substantially aline with the slide of the bolt 35. v r
It is also desirableto'have' means 'for lockmg orsetting the latch bolt 4 disposed on the inner side of the lock, and for this purpose a dog member 39 is'pivot'ed flat against the plate 11 and this memberhas a pin or tongue l0 projecting between the plates 11' and 10 extending toward and almost to the latter plate. The dog 39 has'a pin 39 at its upper end which, whensaid dog is swung about'its pivot, is adapted to enter an a ierture'dti'formed inthe upper portion of each handle 15 which is disposed between plates 10 and 11. The plate 10 also has pivoted flat against the inner side thereof, a lever 41 which has a U-shaped sleeve 42' preterably formed integral therewith projecting toward plate 11 in which the tongue 40 substantially fits and is adapted to slide. The lever 41 is provided with a tongue at its upper end which is received in a downwardly extending slot formed in a cam lever 44 lying flat against the plate 10 and pivoted between the same'and a plate 45 slightly spaced therefrom and secured thereto. The plate 44 is swung about its plvot by a cam 46 mounted on a stem 47 extending through the plates 10 and 45 and the upper portion of housing 13, the outer end of which is provided with a flat operating handle 48. The lever 44 is held in either of two positions by a sear spring 49 disposed about the top ofthe same between the plates 10 and 45 and extends under a pair or pins 50. The stem 47, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 to 4, is held in place by a split key. A pin 41 in lever 41 is adapted to enter one aperture 43.
In operation, the latch bolt 4 will normally be projected by the spring 6. When either of the handles 15 are gripped by the hand and drawn toward the outer side of the guards 13, it will be guided in the top of said guard and will swing about its point of contact with the washer 16. The respective bar 18 will thus be swung and the pin 21 thereonmoved upwardly. This pin will act on the upper side-of the slot 22 and move the member 23 upwardly, said member being guided by the pins projecting there from and traveling in the slots in the yoke clips 25 and 26. The plate 23 will swing upwardly, the inner arm of bell crank lever 9 and the lower arm of said bell crank lever will act on stem 7 and withdraw the latch bolt 4. The latch can thus be operated by either handle 15. hen the-handleis released, the member 23 will drop by gravity and, through the action of spring 6, the latch will be again projected and the handles 15 moved to their inner position, being stopped by the stop lugs 17. If it is desired to set the latch bolt 4 or prevent movement thereof from the inside of the door, the handle 48 will be turned and the lever 41 will then be swung about its pivot by lever 44, pin 41 entering aperture 43. The sleeve 42 will thus be swung about the pivot of lever 41 and will, in turn, similarly swing the tongue 40 which is attached to the dog 39. The said dog will then be swung about its pivot and the latch bolt 4 will be locked against move ment. If it is desired to set the latch or lock the same from the outside oi the door, a key will be used and the latch bolt 35 will be projected into slots 37 and 38 and the handles 15 and latch bolt 4 thus prevented from movement. The latch will then have to be released by the use of the key. The lock is adapted to tit doors of varying th ckness and for this purpose the plate 10 Wlll be separated a greater distance from plate 11. merely slide on the tongue 40 and the pins 21 will merely slide in the slots 22. When the lock is thus widened it may be desirable to move the guide yokes 25 and 26 laterally and this can be done by moving the nuts on the screws 27 and 30 and thus moving the said yokes laterally. As above described, it will also be necessary to adjust the plate 19 so that slot 38 can aline with slot 37. lVhen it is desired to remove the'lock from the door, the screws holding the plates 10 and 11 in place will merely be removed and the plate 10 drawn directly out. The plate 11 can then be swung-outward at its upper end and taken out with a lifting movement so that the tongue of the bell crank lever 9 will withdraw from its engagement with the When this is done the sleeve 42 will stem 7. The latch and its assembled parts 1 can then be withdrawn by removing plate 2. There are thus no loose parts in the lock which may drop out and be difficult to re place. All of the parts are secured in position to one or the other of plates 10 and 11 and these plates, with their attached parts, form two units, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. The lock can be placed in the door by merely reversing the movement described for removing the same.
From the above description it is seen that applicant has provided a simple and et- "cient lock mechanism and one that is easily operated and can be easily and quickly installed or removed. The parts of the device are all ruggedly made and secured in position and there is practically no chance for the parts to become disarranged and thus cause the lock to get out of order. The device has been demonstrated in actual use and found to be very successful and efficient.
It will, of course, be understood, that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope or applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above stated, such as shown and described and set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A door lock comprising spaced plates adapted to be disposed at each side of the door, oscillating handles carried by said plates and movable in. planes perpendicular to the sides of said door, a reciprocating means disposed and bodily movable vertically between said plates, means connecting said reciprocating means to said handles. a latch movable laterally between said plates, means connecting said latch to said reciprocating means, means carried by one ofsaidpla es movable to engage both of Said handles to prevent movement thereof and-of-said latch, and a handle at the outer sideof said .plate for operating said means carried by said plate.
2. A door lock comprising, spaced plates adapted to be disposed at each side of the door, oscillating handles carried by said plates and movable in planes perpendicular to the sides of said-door, a reciprocating means disposed and bodily movable vertically between said plates, means connecting said reciprocating. means to said handles, a latch movable laterally between'said plates, means connecting said latch to said reciproeating means and key-operated means car ried, by one of said plates and adapted to prevent movement of saidhandles andlatch.
3. A lock comprising a reciprocating latch, oppositely disposed handles -mounted for swinging movement in planes at right angles to the movement of said latch, bars securedto sa dhandles to move therewith, a member bodily and vertically reciprocable-in a plane at right angles. to the movement of said latch, means on said bars engaging saidiinemher to reciprocatethe same and articulated means connecting said member and said latch.

The structure set forth in claim 10, said latch being spring-pressed outwardly and having. an apertured stem at its inner end, a bell crank lever pivoted between said plates having one arm engaging said apertured stem, said member having an aperture in its lower end in which the other arm of said lever engages.
12. The structure set forth in claim 10, said member having means projecting therefrom adjacent each end thereof, and yoke clips mounted between said plates and hav ing slots therein in which said means are disposed for guiding said plates.
18. The structure set forth in claim 10, and a stem and sleeve carried by said plates, respectively, and relatively slidable whereby said plates may be separated different distances, said projecting pins on the said portions of each handle sliding in said said member, said yoke, plates being adprstable toward and from stem sliding in said sleeve are moved apart.
14-. A lock comprising spaced parallel plates adapted to be disposed at each side of a door, a housing member carried at the outer side of each plate, bail handles swingingly mounted in said housings and having spaced ends extending through said plates, a bar connecting said ends of each handle and disposed between said plates, a reciprocating member between said plates, means at each side of said reciprocating member slidably engaged by means carried by said bars, and a latch reciprocating laterally parallel to said plates operatively connected to said reciprocating member.
