To all coho m it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enwano F. GAMBER, a citizen of the" United States, residing at Shainokin, in the county of Northuniber land and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in lVindow Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a folding window jack for the use of painters, window washers and mechanics and workmen generally. The main object of the invention is to provide asimple, strong and eiiicient window scaffold or jack, in a form which may be easily folded up in compact'bundle for transportation from place to place.

This invention consists of two planks 1 of suit-able length and width for the purpose, and hinged together by means of offset strap hinges 2 mounted along the under sides of the planks, so that when the device is mounted in place in a window, these hinges being on the under side, will help to prevent the planks from buckling together. Furthermore, the hinge joints being offset at'right angles from the hinge bodies, as shown at 3, serve, when the device is folded together, to throw the two planks 1 away from each other, so as to leave a suilicient space between them to accommodate the tie rods hereinafter referred to, and so as to make a neat and compact package when folded. Stay pin plates 1 are secured to the ends 5 of the planks designed for positioning over the sill 6 of the window 7 the said plates and planks being provided with a plurality of laterally aligned or paired stay pin holes 8 adapted to slidingly receive stay pins 9 which are thrust through said holes and have a bearing against the inner edge of the window sill 6 in order to anchor the device in place in the window. Brace bearing lugs 10 and 11 provided with tie rod eyes are screwed also to the under sides .of the planks lat the outer edges thereof,
the lugs 10 at the ends carrying the stay pin holes 8 being spaced sufliciently from those ends to permit the same being projectedinwardly through the window with the lugs located adjacent the outer edge of the window sill. The other set of lugs 11 are mounted near the outer endsof the planks. Two legs 12 'of bar iron are provided at their ends with eyes 13 corresponding to and adapted to register with the eyes of the lugs 11. Two braces 14 having eyes 15 to registerwith the eyes of the lugs 10, are provided Both the legs 12 and the braces 14 are provided with series of aligned or paired tie rod holes 16. Three tierods 17, 18, and 19 are provided, all identical in form, of a length sufficient to span the width of the planks 1 when opened out, the said rods being threaded at their outer ends and provided with nuts 21. Stop shoulders 22 are formed immediately back of the threaded ends of the tie rod 19. The said shoulders 22 are so located that the distance between their outer faces or edges is approximately equal to the width of the two planks when opened out.
The device'is now ready for setting up in the windowi'. This is accomplished by opening out the planks 1, and positioning the ends 5 inside the window, the hinges 2 being turned downward. The stay pins 9 are then thrust through the proper set of holes 8. Theends of the rods 17 and 18 are thrust through the eyes of the lugs 10 and 11 respectively and nuts 21 are turned up on the ends thereof. Then the legs 12 are turned inwardly against the wall of the building and the braces 14 are drawn outwardly angularly across the legs 12 and when the planks 1 are properly leveled up the ends of the lower tie rod 19 are inserted through the proper set of holes 16, through the said legs and braces and their nuts 21 are firmly turned up, thus locking the device in operative position. hen folded up for transportation, the offset form of hinges employed leaves a sufiicient space between the planks for receiving and holding the three tie rods. By mounting two or more of these devices in adjacent windows, scaffold boards maybe laid across, thus forming a regular scaffold. These boards may be secured in place in any conventional manner, as safety pins 23 passed through the outer board and" through the planks o'tthe window jacks.
lVhile I have herein described a certain specific manner and method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same inminor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention, so as best to-construct a practical device for the purpose. intended, as defined in the appended claim,
