VENTOR ATTORNEY Patented May 19, 1931 v warren stares ROBERT W. SIMPSON, F SALEM, OHIO FOLDING TABLE Application filed May 3, 1929. Serial No. 360,243.
This invention relates to a table, the general object of the invention being to provide the table with foldable legs, with means for firmly holding the legs in either folded or unfolded position, such means being released by pressure thereon.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts,
to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the table in set up position.
2 Figure 2 is a similar view, with the legs folded.
Figure 3 is a bottom legs folded.
Figure 4 is an end view.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fig ure 5.
Figure 7 is a view of one guiding bars.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the inner end of one of the brace members.
In these views, the numeral 1 indicates the table top which has a cross piece 2 fastened to its under face, adjacent one end thereof. The .legs 3 are connected together in pairs by the cross pieces 4 and 5, the cross piece 5 being connected with the upper ends of the legs and a pair of hinges 6 connect each pair of legs with the bottom of the table. One leaf of each hinge is connected with one end of the cross piece 5 and the other leaf-with the table top adjacent a cross piece 2 so that when the legs are in upright position, they will abut the cross pieces which act as brace means for the legs.
A pair of angle bars 7 each has one flange fastened to a strip 7 secured to the under face of the table, theother flan es of the two bars being parallel and in spaced relation plan view, with the of the notched and extending upwardly into the space between the strips. These bars are arranged at the longitudinal center of the top, as shown in Figure 8.- The upwardly extending flange of each bar is formed with the two pairs of .55 notches 8.
A V-shaped brace 9 has its wide end pivotally connected with each pair of legs adjacent the cross bar 4 and the inner end of each brace carries an upright 10 through which a pin 11 passes. The pins of the braces slide on the upper edges of the vertical flanges of the angle bars 7 during the opening and closing movements of the levers and said pins will engage the inner notches 8 when the legs or. are folded, and the outer notches 8 when the legs are in open position, the pins and notches acting to lock the legs in either folded or open position.
A spring 12, fastened to the table top and arranged between the supporting means for the angle bars, engages the uprights 10 and acts to force the pins into the notches when 1 the pins come opposite the notches. A slight pressure on the braces in an upward direction will cause the pins to leave the notches so that the legs can be folded or moved to open position, as desired.
Thus I have provided simple means for holding the foldable legsof a table in either so open or closed position, such means permitting the legs to be easily and quickly moved to open and closed position.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the to scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is zi A foldable table comprising a top, legs hingedly connected with the under side of the top, a substantially V-shaped brace member pivotally connected with each pair of legs,
a pair of strips connected with the under face of the top and spaced apart, an angle-shaped member having one flange connected with each strip and its other flange extending into the space formed by the strips, said flange having a notch therein adjacent each end thereof and the upwardly extending flanges being spaced apart, each brace member having an upwardly extending projection at its free end which extends into the space between the two flanges, a cross pin carried by each projection and engaging the upper edgesfof said flanges and spring strips in w the space between the two strips for forcing the pins into the notches to hold the legs in folded and unfolded position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, ROBERT SIM SON. V
