Description

Patented Nov. 24,1874.
'mx enum:
OFFICE,
GEORGE SEEGER, OF OLARKS HILL, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT EN WAGON-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 157,229, dated November 24, 1874; application liled November 3, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SEEGEE, of Clarks Hill, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Brakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reterence being had to the annexed drawings making part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of a wagonbed turned upside down, to show the mode of attaching the bra-ke. Fig. 2 is a view of the device employed for attaching the brake tc the bed of the Wagon.
The same letters are employed in both ligures in the indication of identical parts.
The object of this improvement is to furnish a convenient means for attaching and detaching the brake.
A represent the wagon-bed, of any desired form, and B B are the brake-shoes. The shoes are attached to the transverse rod B', which extends under the bed, and is bent at each end into a crank-form to receive the shoes. Itis suspended from the dovetail-plates C C, which are constructed to receive it. They are tapered in the form of dovetails, as shown, and also beveledV on the edges, where they engage corresponding dovetailed and beveled lugs D, which are bolted to the bed, near the bottom. As the dovetailed plates fit into the lugs, by slipping down to their bearings, the
brakes are very readily attached. When thus attached, they are secured by turning the tapered buttons E E, which serve as wedges to prevent the brake-rod rising after the buttons, or other equivalent keys, are interposed between it and the body of the bed. Removing the keys, however, the brakes are easily detached by merely lifting the wings out of `the lugs. The arm F is attached to the rod B', rigidly, so as to operate the brakes, as it is turned, by means of' the connecting-rod G and lever H. The latter is constructed with a-slot to engage an elongated head of the pivot H, the lever, when attached, turning under the head. It can only be detached when the head is in line with the slot. H2 is the ordinary ratchet for holding the lever when the brakes have been set.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The mechanism for conveniently attaching the brake to the wagon-bed and detaching the same, consisting of the dovetailed plates C, supporting the brake-rod, the corresponding lugs D, and the keys E, all combined substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with dovetailed plates C, lugs D, lever F, connecting-rod G, lever H, and pivot Hl, connected by the elongated head and slot, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE SEEGER.
