HAIIR-STRAIGHTENING IRON.

Be it known that I, THOMAS C. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hair-Straightening Irons, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved hair straightening iron, particularly useful for taking kinks, waves or curls out of hair and leaving them straight. My improved device is clearly shown on the accompanying drawing in which-- v Figure 1 is a side elevational view;

The general construction and the appearance of the device is the same as that of the ordinary electric curling iron. It comprises a heating rod 10 extending from a grip or handle 11 which is strengthened by the ferrule 12. hen the iron is electrically heated the rod 10 is made tubular to receive the electric resistance element 13. Cooperating with the heating rod is the jaw structure a. This structure comprises the flat body part 141 having the bifurcated end 15 which receives the rod 10 and is pivoted by means of the pin 16 supported by the bracketv 17 which is secured to the rod 10 adjacent ferrule 12. The end of the jaw structure has secured thereto the handle or grip sleeve 18 alongside of the main grip 11. The aw structure can then be readily swung to carry its body part 14 against or away from the rod 10. Extending from the body part 14: at the sides thereof and substantially at right angles therewith are the teeth 19 separated by the grooves 20, these teeth extending alongside of the rod 10 when the body part let is against the rod. In using the device, the jaw structure is swung to open position and the rod 10 is then slipped under the hair to be treated, as shown in Fig. 4. The jaw structure is then closed and during such closure movement, the teeth 19 separate and spread the hair uniformly in the passageways 20, the distributed hair being then held down between the i'od 10 and the flat blade part 14 of the jaw structure. As the hair 1S then clamped with more or less pressure, the device is moved laterally to draw it slowly along the hair, which, by its contact with the hot rod, will then beheated and straightened. Under some conditions, as where the hair is persistently curly or kinky, the hair can first be treated with some materials,

such as tallow, wax, composition, or other substances which, after heating, will stiffen or harden. After such treatment, the device is applied to the hair as before described, the heat thcn melting. or softening the dressing while the hair is being clamped and being stroked, and the dressingstiffening or hardening after it has cooled, and then retaining the hair in straight condition. I claim as follows 1. Av hair dressing device of the class described, comprising an elongated flat hair receiving member, hair distributing teeth along the sides of said member, and a heating member adapted to be applied to said hair receiving member between the teeth thereof.

2. In a hair dressing device of the class described, the combination of an elongated member having a flat hair receiving surface thereon and hair distributing teeth along the sides of said surface, and a heating rod having a fiat surface adapted to be applied to said hair receiving member between the teeth thereof.
