To all whom it may concern-x Be it known that I. Josnrn; PIE'lRlE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Padlocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex'actdescription.
My invention relates to improvements in padlocks, and it consistsin the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a padlock of the character described in which the shackle of the padlock is arranged to be entirely disengaged from the cooperating body portion of the lock, and in which means is provided for positively precluding movement of the shackle without first removing the key actuated locking core from i the body.
A further object of my invention is to provide a padlock of the character ClGSCllbBd which is so constructed as to preclude the possibility of damage to the key actuated locking mechanism in the drum by forceful attempts to disengage the shackle of the padlock from the body member as by the use of a crowbar or the like, which, in the case of the ordinary type of padlock, often mut-ilates the key actuated locking mechanism so as to cause the padlock to open.
A further object of my invention is to provide a padlock of the character described which is compact in form, extremely durable in construction, and thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appendedclaims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of an embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional view along the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a sectional view along the line 33 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the key actuated locking core removed from the padlock.
In carrying out my invention I make use bore 2 extending longitudinally through the major part of the body and having its mouth at the face of the body member. This bore 2 has an enlarged portion 3 at the innermost end and an enlarged portion 4 at the foremost end thereof. A U-shaped shackle 5 of steel is projected through bores 6 extending transversely through the body member from the top 7 of the body member to a pointadjacent to the bottom of the body member.
The innermost ends of the work encircling member 5 have arcuate recesses 7 therein fashioned with their surfaces contiguous with the surface of the bore 2, and a portion at the rearward end provided with recesses 8 having their surfaces contiguous with the side walls of the enlarged portion 3 of the bore 2. This is clearly shown in Figure 8.
The top 7* of the body member 1. has an arcuate recess 9 extending transversely thereacross with its axis parallel, with the axis of the body member for the purpose of enlarging the space between theinner side walls of the shackle '5 and the body member.
Means for locking the shackle 5 against unintentional removal from the body member 1 is provided in a key actuated locking core 10 which has a flange 11 at the outermost end thereof which is received in the recess 4 The diameter of the major part of the core 10 is such as to closely engage with the side walls of the bore 2 so that there is no play between the core and the bore 2.
The core 10 is of steel as in the case of the body member 1 and the member 5 and has three radially disposed bolts 12 slidably mounted therein and arranged for longitudinal movement in paths parallel with coinciding radii of the core. 'The innermost ends of the bolts 12 are provided with laterally extending pins 13 which pins have their axes parallel with the axis of the core 10.
The pins '13 project through slots 14: pro- 100 vided in a disc 15 which is rotatably mounted at the rear of the core 10 and which has its outermost face contiguous with the rear walls of the core. The slots 14 are so disposed with respect to one another and to the 105 pins 13 as to cause the bolts 12 to be pro jected radially from the core 10 when the disc 15 is turned in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Figure 3, and to cause the bolts 12 of a steel body member 1 having a central to be drawn inwardly with their outermost" ends contiguous with the peripheral wall of the core when the disc is rotated in a counterclockwise direction.
The projection of the bolts 12 radially from the core 10 causes the bolts to engage with the enlarged portion 3 of the bore 2 and with the shoulder formed by the adja: cent recesses 7 and 8 of the work encircling member 5. Thus it is impossible to remove the core 10 when the bolts 12 are projected radially therefrom.
It. is apparent from the construction of the shackle and the body member 1 as described that removal of the shackle 5 from the body member 1 is a practical impossibility as long as the core is disposed within the bore 2.
Means for moving the disc 15 and for locking the disc is provided in a standard key actuated locking mechanism 17 associated with the disc 13 and op rated by a key 19 projected through a key plate 20 on the face 21 of the core 10.
Means for augmenting the removal of the core 10 from the bore 2 when the key mechanism 17 is actuated, as by means of the key 1-9 seas to move the bolts 12 out of engagement with the enlarged portion 3 and shoul der 0t theshackle 5 is provided in a pair of rearwardly extending slidable pins 22 which normally assume the position shown in Figure 4 by virtue of springs 23 disposed behind the pins 22 within the core 10, and which assume the position shown in Figure 2 when the core is disposed within the bore againstthe force of the springs 23.
Means for preventing-the total projection ofthe pins 21 from the core 10 is provided in enlarged portions 24 at the innermost ends ofthe pins 22 which engage with the shoulders 25 in a bore 26 in which the springs 23 and innermost ends of the pins 22 are disposed.
Means for preventing rotation of the core 10 relative to the body member 1 as in actuating the key locking mechanism 17 is provided in a transverse recess 27 extending i projected within the bore 2 and is guided in v across the top'of the core; 10 and arranged to engage with a steel ball 28 set in the adjacent wall of the bore 2.
' From thetoregoing description of the various parts of the device the .operationthereof may be readily understood. In actuating my improved padlock the shackle 5 is removed from the body member land is en gaged with the hasps, chain links or whatever devices are to be secured, whereupon the body member 1 is engaged with the innermost ends of the shackle 5 by the projection of the ends through the bores 6 in the body member.
The core 10 with its key in place is then movement by the recess 27 and ball 28.
The springs 23 will be pressed as'the core 10 is moved inwardly until the flange 11. is
fully received within the enlarged portion 1 shackle 5 from the body member '1 or to pry the two members apart will not in any way damage or strain the key actuatedlocking mechanism of the core, since the strain is entirely born by the three cooperating members which comprise the body member 1, the innermost portions ot' the shackle 5, and the core 10. Each ot' these members is constructed of steel and ot' sutlicient thickness and size with respect to the work to which the padlock is .to be used as to withstand the moist strenuous and forceful efforts .to pry the members apart.

A padlockof the character described comprising a body member having a bore, a U-shaped shackle arranged for partial projection into said body member in a plane transverse to the axis of said here, portions of said shackle being cut away so as to conform with the contour of the side walls of said bore, a core arranged for projection in to the bore of said body member and having its outer face contiguous with the outer face of the body member, a key actuated locking mechanism for locking said core against removal from said body member, and yielding means for moving said core out of registration with the bore in said body member when the key actuated locking mechanism is released.

A padlock of the character described comprising a body member having a central bore, a U-shaped shackle, said body member having bores disposed transversely therethrough with respect to the central bore in said body member and communicating with the central here, said shackle being arranged for partial projection into said body member through said transverse bore and having arcuate recesses in the adjacent side walls thereof, whereby the shackle may conform in contour with the side walls of the central bore, a core arranged for projection Within the bore of said body member, and a key actuated locking mechanism for locking said core against removal from said bore.
