,nnvrcr: Eon nrsriznsme am) MOISTENING GUMMED TAPE.
Application filed April 29, 1924. Serial I i o. 709,807;
7 To aZlw/wm it may citizen of the United States, of the city and county of San Francisco,
Be it knownthat .1, PAUL W. BLACK, 21 and a resident State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Dispensing and Moistening Gummed Tape, of which the following is a specification. a
The invention relates to a device for dispensing and moistening gummed tape which is used for sealing packages and cartons and for mendingpurposes. f
1 Anobject of the invention is to provide a gummed tape dispensing and moistening device which may becarried in the pocket.
' Another object of the invention is to prothe edge is still dry.
Another object of the invention "is to pro-.
vide a gummed ta'pe moistening device with means for sealing the'moistening chamber when the device is not in use. a
Another object of the invention is toprovide an eflicient and inexpensive gummed tape moistening device in which the tapei's moistened after it has edge, so that when the tape is severed at the cutting edge,
the remaining brtion 9f vide a gummed tape inoistening device with means for mixing the applied moisture with the gum, so that the gummed surface im-.
7 mediately becomes sticky.
- for illustrati n in the drawings accompany The invention possesses other advantageous features, some of which, with the foregoing,
will be setforth at length in the following description,- where I shall outline in full that form of the invention which have selected ing and forming art of the present specification. In said rawings I have shown one form of device embodying my 'invention,.
but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to such form, since the invention,
as set forth'in the claims, may be embodied I in a plurality of forms.
Referring to said drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the device of my invention with the moistening device cover in positionto seal the .moistening device chamber.
Figure 2 is a top view of the device of my invention, a portion of the rollchamber cover and the moistening device cover being removed to show the construction. I
Figure 3 is a' cross-section taken on the line 33 Figure 1. J
passed the cutting Figure 4 is la perspective view of the device with the moistening device cover in closed position. a
Figure 5 is a pers ctive view 2 of a fragment ofthe exten ing portion of the cover plate of the roll chamber showing the projections thereon for engagement by the moistening devicecover, the moistening device co ver being indicated in broken lines.
The device of my invention is constructed to permit it to be carried in the pocket and is provided with means for preventing the water or moisture from leaking therefrom while it is being carried'in the pocket. By providing a small,- portable device of this character, the user may carry it to the packages to be sealed, thus greatly reducing he [labor of sealing packages. Heretofore, devices for moistening gummed tape have been large s6 that it was necessary to carry the package to the device, an operation which is expensive both'i'n time and effort. M
y The device of my invention comprises a casing 2 having side walls .3 which enclose two chambers, the chamber 4 being adapted to contain the roll 5 of gum'med tape and the chamber 6 containing a' 'noistening dey vice preferably in the form of a charge of absorbent material such as the sponge 7 The two/chambers 4 and Gare separated from each other by the transverse wall 8 which extends upward for the height of the side walls 3. The moistening device chamber 6 is closed at'the top by a plate'12 which is preferably hinged at 13 to the upper end of the .wall 8. The plate 12 is preferably provided along" its side with beveled ed es which'seat against complementary beve ed edges on the inner sides of the side walls 3, so that the plate 12, makes a tight fit with the side walls and is held in place by wedging action. The plate 12 is of less length than the chamber 6 so that an opening is provided between the end of the plate 12 and the end wall 14 of the'casing, through ing devicer' The roll chamber 4 is closed by a cover 15 which is hinged to the back wall 16 of the casing'and which is provided with to permit the ready insertion thumb for the purpose of, advancingn device,
roll of gum-med tape, 15 is provided with 118, which overlies and is spaced from the plate 12, forming with the plate 12 a passage through which the unrolled tape passes and by which the tape is directed to the moistening device. The portion 18 of the cover plate is provided with an aperture 19 the ta er pe. The tape is advanced by the until arsuitabl 7 portion thereof projects lusyond the edges 20 of the cover extension 18 and then the projecting portion of the tape is grasped by the across the moistening device and after suf- 'fici ent tape has beeen .withdrawn to meet the necessities of the situation, the tape severed by-tearing it along the edge 20.
in order to insure thorough wetting of the gummed surface of the tape, I have arranged a brush 21 in'the casing, adjacent projecting portion of the sponge 7, so that as the tape is drawn across the moistening the gum is first moistened by the sponge andthe moisture-isthen distributed evaporation and leakage.
. casing adjacent the opening --which the moistening hood or cover 22 which is movable to cover wait for the gum the tape is used.

The end 14 of the casing is the cover 22 is similarly curved, so that when the cover is moved to expose the 111015- tening device, it lies snugly against the end 'of' the'casing, as shown-in re 1'; The cover 22 makes a tight joint with the end 14 ofthe casing and with the Y sidewalls thereof and,

When the cover 22 is moved to close the moistenlng device chamber, the forward of the cover engages the lip 25 thus understood that. the cover tight frictional contact with the casing 2,

Moisture may be-added to the absorbent pad 7 by introducing it into the pad through the chamber 6 and, when it is desired to renew the moistening device pad, the plate .12 may be lifted to provide access to the chamberG. a
By virtue of this invention I 'ave produced a simple, portable gumme tape dispensing and moistening device which may be carried in the pocket of the user and which, when s'o carried, may be closed to prevent leakage of moisture therefrom.
