Description

July 16, 1940. F. M. WAY ET AL APPLICATOR FOR LIQUID LIP COLORING Filed April 20, 1959 Patented July 16, 1940 2,207,959 APPLICATOR FOR LIQUID LIP COLORING Florence M. Way and Valentine A. Zitz, Sitka, Territory of Alaska Application April 20, 1939, Serial No. 269,023
. 4 Claims.
This invention relates to an applicator for liquid lip coloring, and its is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind of a characterto assure desired coloring by pressing the applicator against the lips.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which can be readily adjusted to fit the lips of an individual so that the same can be employed with advantage by the individual for whose, lips the device has been adjusted.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which properly colors both the upper and lower lips as well as the inner edge.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved applicator for liquid lip coloring whereby certain im- 20 portant advantages are attained and the article rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying draw- 30 ing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating an applicator constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention;
35 Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the back or base member for the lip piece;
Figure 4 is a view partly in section and partly 40 in elevation of the cover for the lip piece;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view partly in transverse section and partly in elevation illustrating the mounting of the pressing blade.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, our
45 improved applicator comprises a casing C of desired dimensions and design and which has one end closed by an inwardly disposed arcuate wall I while the opposite end of the casing C is open but having a closure member A detachably en- 50 gaged with the casing C. The lip or applicating member M is produced from a fast absorbing material, such as absorbent rubber, with the marginal portion thereof formed of a non-absorbent material or rubber and which marginal portion 55 2 is sufliciently pliable and stretchable to engage over the marginal portion of the back or base member B.
This back or base member B comprises two end members 3 of duplicate formation and of a design to conform to the general outline of 5 the lips of a person when the mouth is closed. The inner portions of these members 3'are reduced in width at 4 as indicated by broken lines in Figure 3. These reduced portions overlap and also overlap the rear portion of a central 10 member or plate 5. The overlying portions of the members 3 at their transverse centers are provided with the longitudinally disposed slots 6 through which passes a tubular shank I. This shank 1 is also disposed through the axial center 15 of the plate 5. This shank 1 allows the members 3 to be longitudinally adjusted one with respect to the other and also relatively adjusted about the shank I as a pivot so that the members 3 may be adjusted to conform to the lip lines of a particular individual so that when the applicator M is applied to the base or back member B said applicator will be in a position to best apply the coloring t0 the lips.
As illustrated in Figure 1, the member M has its back face or that face which directly contacts with the member M disposed on a curvature of substantially the same radius as the curvature of the wall I. The tubular shank 1 constitutes a nozzle for the bag 8 within the casing C. This bag 8 is of desired-capacity and has its walls formed preferably of rubber. The nozzle 1 constitutes the only means of ingress or egress for the bag.
With the member M removed the bag 8 is filled through the shank or nozzle 1 and upon application of pressure upon the bag the liquid therein will be caused to discharge out through the shank or nozzle 1 for quick absorption by the member M so that when the member M is pressed against the lips the liquid will be transferred to properly color the lips.
The member M is so constructed and formed to color both the upper and lower lips as well as the inner edge thereof upon a single operation and its outer or contacting face is of such configuration as to have proper fit against the lips and to provide at the transverse center of said outer face the outstanding protrusion 9 extending from one end portion of the member M to the other and which operates to fit between the lips from one comer to the other of the mouth so that the desired coloring of the inner portions of the lips is assured.
Slidably disposed through the closure memthe spaced lugs l5 within the member A at the 5 side thereof remote from the shank ill. The blade I4 is of a length to extend a material distance beyond the open face of the closure member A so that when the'closure member A is in applied position upon the casing C it will extend inwardly of said casing C a material distance and to one side of the bag 8. Upon pull being imposed upon the shank ID the blade M will swing in a direction toward the bag 8 to compress the same and thereby assuring the discharge of the coloring liquid within the bag 8 out through the tubular shank or nozzle I for quick absorption by the member M.
The blade 14 as well as the lever [2 are preferably integrally connected and possess inherent resiliency. The lever I2 is also disposed in a direction inwardly of the blade I4 on an angle of aproximately seventy-five degrees.
When the device is not in use, the member M is adapted to be housed within the covermember l6 herein disclosed as of a slip type.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that an applicator for liquid lip coloring constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and forthis reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to theprecise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown I 1. An applicator for lip coloring liquid comprising a casing, a container for the lip coloring liquid within the casing, an applicator of quick absorbing material disposed over a face of the casing and arranged exteriorly thereof, a nozzle leading from the liquid container for discharge upon the applicator, and a back member for the applicator, said back member comprising two end pieces having overlapping portions provided with slots, the nozzle extending through said slots, said slots permitting the end pieces to be relatively-adjusted about the nozzle as a pivot, said slots also allowing endwise relative adjustment of the pieces.
2. An applicator for lip coloring liquid including an applicator of quick absorbent material and a back member for the applicator, said back member comprising two end pieces having overlapping portions provided with slots, and a member extending through the slots for connecting the same for relative pivotal movement about said member, the slots permitting endwise relative adjustment of the pieces.
3. An applicator for lip coloring liquid includ ing an applicator of quick absorbent material and a back member for the applicator, said back member comprising two end pieces having overlapping portions provided with slots, and a member extending through the slots for connecting the same for relative pivotal movement about said member, the slots permitting endwise relativeadjustment of the pieces, the applicator being pliable and stretchable to engage over marginal portions of the sections of the back member for holding the applicator to the back member.
4. An applicator for lip coloring liquid including an applicator of quick absorbent material and a back member for the applicatonsaid back member comprising-two end pieces having overlapping portions provided with slots, and a member extending through the slots for connecting the same for relative pivotal movement about said member, the slots permitting endwise relative adjustment of the pieces, said member being tubular to provide means for delivering the lip coloring liquid to the applicator. v
