Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SEWALL J. LEACH, OF TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,206, dated November 24, 1874 application led October 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEWALL J. LEAGH, of Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa county, Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Bale-Tie, of which the following is a specication:
My invention consists of a little plate with a right-angled ange at each edge, attached to one end of the hoop, the plate being a little narrower than the breadth of the hoop, and the ange being notched transversely on the inner faces to lock the free end ofthe hoop, which is correspondingly notched on its edges to it the notches ot' the flanges. The latter are inclined in the direction to cause the hoop to draw to the bottom of the space between the anges, and thus insure the holding of it so as not to work loose. There is also a loop on one end of the tie for the free end ot' the hoop to pass through, to be kept in position at the time of fastening until secured by the notches.
In the drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal ection of my improved bale-tie. Fig. 2 is a side View. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line a', Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the plate; B, the flange, and C the hoop or band. The plate is attached to the end D, the flanges are notched or serrated 011 the inside, as shown at E, and both ends ot the hoop are correspondingly notched at the edges for a short distance, to interlock with said notches, the free end G being notched a little farther than the other to allow of straining it along until tight, and then locking it. F is the loop at the end of the tie for passing the free end ot the hoop through to keep it in position during the process of fastening it; also, for binding the projecting end over after locking, in case it may be required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The plate A, having notched or serrated flanges D, combined with the hoop, having' notched edges, as described.
2. The loop F, combined with the plate A and notched anges D, substantially as speciiied.
SEWALL J. LEAGH.
