CONVERTIBLE TABLE.

To all "whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. SCHMITT, a citizen. of the Jnited States, residing at Algoma, in the county of Kewaunee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to convertible tables and has for its object to provide a. tableof such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with means whereby the shape of the top thereof can be expeditiously changed from and to that of polygonal contour, to and from that of circular contour when occasion requires.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a table of the class referred to, with a top including-a plurality of extendible sections, and further with releasable means for supporting and maintaining said sections when extended, as well as further including means for detachably securing said sections in folded position.

Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a convertible table, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, thoroughly efficient and convenient in its use, readily assembled and comparatircly inexpensive to manufacture.

ith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel constriuctiou, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended,

Referring to the drawings in detail, the table top comprises a polygonal shaped stationar body portion 1 and a series of segment-shaped sections 2, 3, t and 5. The said sections are hinged to the lower face of the body portion 1, as at 6, and when extended have their inner edges abutting against the edges of the body portion 1, thereby providing a top of circular contour as shown in Figure 2. hen the sect-ions of the top are folded they extend under the body portion 1, as well as in parallelism therewith, and each of said sections is detachably retained in folded position by a resilient latch '7, which is secured to and depends from the lower face of the body portion 1. The latches 7 when in engagement with the sections 2, 3, and 5 overlap the free edge thereof as clearly shown in Figure 3.

For the purpose of maintaining the sections 2, 3, 4 and 5 in extended position, a series of radially disposed shiftable locking members are employed and each of said members consists of a fiat bar 8, having the longitudinal edges thereof oppositely bevelled, as at 9, 10, and said bar 8 in tran verse section is in the form of a dovetail tongue. The locking members are slidably mounted in dovetail grooves formed in the lower face of the body portion 1 and also in the lower face of the sections 2, 3, l and 5. The dovetail grooves formed in the lower face of the body portion 1 are indicated at 11., and those in the inner face of the sections 2. 3, 4i and 5 are indicated at 12. The groove; 11 have their outer ends register with the inner ends of the grooves 12 when the sections 2, 3, 4: and 5 are extend-ed, wher by the locking members can be shifted to projectfrom the body portion 1 and extended into the grooves 12, as shown in Figure 2, whereby the sections 2, 3, L and 5 will be maintained in an extended position. Each of the bars 8 has secured thereto, in proximity to its outer end, a depending finger piece in the form of a cylindrical pin, as indicated at 13, to facilitate the shifting of the bar. The bar 8 is of the same length as the length of the groove 11 in which it is mounted.
