This application forms a continuation in part. of my allowed United States application Serial No. 7 50,394, filed November 17,
192st, and allowed July 7th, 1925.
Lil e the original application, one object of the invention is to provide an exceptionally simple and inexpensive, yet a highly desirable form of permutation. or combinat-ion lock of the type in which a shaft is turned first in one direction and then in the other, to aline certain locking members which must be so alined before the lock can be released. 7
Further objects are to provide a novel dog and ratchet means for holding certain locking members in released position and to make provision whereby the locking members may be adjusted to change the combination of the lock.
The invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, for carrying out these objects, such matter being shown in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a lock constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view as indicated by line 33 of Fig. 2.
Figures 4, 5, 6,-and 7 are perspective views showing different features of con struction.
l have shown the improved locking mechanism in, connection with an inner plate 1 secured by screws 01 the like 2 to a member A which is to be locked to another member 15, and these members may be considered as are formed with openings 5* and 6 respectively, the opening 5 being in the shape of a key-hole.
A dial disk 7 spans the depression 6 and 18 provided on its lower side with a reduced portion 8 in said depression having ratchet teeth 9, these teeth being co-operable with a spring dog 10 secured in the aforesaid depression, so that the disk 7 may turn in one direction only. The portion 8 is provided with an integral sleeve 11 passing through the opening 6, and when the plates 1 and 3 are engaged, through the opening 5 also, said sleeve carrying a locking member 12.
The outer side of the disk 7 is formed with a recess 13 containing a spring dog 1d, the latter being co-operable with ratchet teeth 15 on the inner side of a disk 16 which spans said recess 13. This disk 16 is provided at its inner side with an integral' sleeve 17 projecting through the sleeve 11 and carrying a locking member 18. The outer side of disk 16 is formed with a substantially annular channel 19 interrupted by an abutment 20 so that it is of non-continuous form. This channel is spanned by a dial disk 21 having an integral shaft 22 which projects through the sleeve 17 and carries a locking member 23. This disk 21 is provided with an operating knob 24 by means of which it may be rotated, and said disk is also provided with a projection 25 received in the channel 19 to co-act with the latter and the abutment 20, (forming the channel ends) in establishing a lost motion connection between the disks 21 and 16.
The locking members 12, 18 and 23 are in the form of arms projecting from rings 12*, 18 and 23 respectively, said rings surrounding the sleeves 11 and 17 and shaft 22 respectively. The sleeves 11 and 17, have circumferentially spaced notches 11 and 17 any of which may receive keys 1218" on the rings 12* and 18, permitting the combi nation of the lock to be readily varied. The ring 23 is preferably non-adjustably keyed to shaft 22 by a key 23 fitting into a keyway 22.
All parts are held in assembled relation by a single screw 26 threaded into the inner end of the shaft 22, and washers 27 may be used wherever desirable.
The plate 3 and disk 7 have suitably identified indicators 3 and 7 and disk 21 is provided with an indicator 21 By first turning disk 7 in the direction permitted by dog 10 and teeth 9, until the predetermined relation exists between the indicators 7 and 3, the locking member 12 is set at released position with respect to the opening 5*. Then, by turning knob 24: in the proper direct-ion, its disk 21 turns the disk 16 in the direction allowed by the ratchet 14-15, the ratchet 97-10 then holding disk 7 against accidental movement. "When knob 24 has been turned until the predetermined relation of indicators 21*7, exists, the locking member 18 will have been aline d with member 12. The knob 24 is retrogradely turned to the proper extent to aline the locking member 23 with the members 12 and 18, and during this movement, ratchet 14115 holds the disk 16 and sleeve 17 against accidental movement. Vith the three members 12, 1S and 28 alined, they may pass through opening 5 and permit separation of plate 3 from plate 1, allowing relative movement of the members A and B.
It will be seen from the foregoing that a very simple and inexpensive, yet an ethcient and desirable permutation lock has been provided. As excellent results may be obtained from the details disclosed, they may well be followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous modifications may be made. Moreover, the lock may be used in connection with a great many different articles, as will be readily understood.

A permutation lock comprising a shaft, a locking member on and operable by said shaft, a sleeve rotatably mounted on the shaft and having aseries of circumferentially spaced recesses, a second locking member, means on said second locking member for engaging the recesses in said sleeve whereby the second locking member may be adjusted on the sleeve for Changing the combination of th lock, and a lost-motion driving connection between said shaft and sleeve.
2. A permutation lock comprising a shaft having a dial disk at one end, a sleeve rotatably surrounding said shaft and having a disk contacting with the inner side of the first named disk, one of sa d d sks h ing a non-continuous concentric channel and the oth r d having a projection. rece ved in said channel, said disks, said channel and said projection forming a lost-motion driving connection between the shaft and sleeve, and locking; members carried by said shaft and sleeve respectively.
3. A permutation lock comprising a shaft having a locking member to be turned thereby, a sleeve rotatable on said shaft and having a second locking member, a lost-motion driving connection between said shaft and said sleeve, a ratchet wheel secured to the sleeve, and a dog co-operable with said ratchet wheel to hold the sleeve when set at a predetermined position by the aforesaid shaft and driving connection.
at. A structure as specified in claim 2; together with ratchet teeth on the edge of the second disk, and a dog co-acting with said teeth to hold the sleeve when set at a predetermined position by the aforesaid shaft and drivin connection.
5. A permutation lock comprising a stationary plate having an irregular-shaped opening, a movable plate having an opening for alinement with the first named opening, said movable plate having a depressed portion in the bottom of which its opening is formed, dial disk spanning said depressed portion and having a ratchet wheel portion located in the depression, a dog mounted in said depression and co-acting with the ratchet teeth, a sleeve projecting from the inner side of the disk through the openings of the two plates and provided with a laterally extending locking member to engage the first named plate, the outer side of said disk having a recess and a dog therein, another disk within this recess having ratchet teeth co-operable with the dog, a sleeve projecting from the secondnamed disk through and beyond the lirst named sleeve, a second locking member on the inner end of the second sleeve, a third disk spanning the recess of the first named disk and having a lost motion driving connection with the second named disk, a shaft passing from said third disk through the second named sleeve and projecting beyond the latter, and a third locking member projecting laterally from the inner end of said shaft.
