COMBINATION-PADLOCK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB E. BRADFORD, citizen of the United States, residing at Ripley, in the county of Brown and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a combination padlock and more specifically to mechanism for positively holding a locking bolt in set position.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and highly efficient combination padlock constructed ofia minimum number of parts, and having on its outer surface a single actuating disk.
A further object of my invention consists in a combination with a locking bolt carried within a padlock of a rotatable member for reciprocating` said bolt, together withV means for retracting said rotatable member when the dial disk mounted at the outside of the padlock shall be given a suitable number of turns or revolutions determined by the secret word or words controlling the revolution of the dial.
With these and other advantages in view my invention comprises the combination, arrangement, and details i of construction clearly shown in the drawings, and then more particularly pointed out `in the appended claim.
In the dra-wings Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of my combination padlock held in operative position in a hasp and staple device. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of my padlock on the line m-m of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical elevation of Fig. 1 with the top removed, showing the internal mechanism thereof. Fig. 4 is a detailed view of a rotatable disk engaging the lever to which the locking bolt is suitably connected. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional View of the padlock wherein is shown the plurality of revoluble disks. Fig. 6 is a sectional transverse view on the line fy-y of Fig. 3, and Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view on line a-a of Fig. 3 of a guiding member' through which a locking bolt projects to hold the shackle of the lock in set position.
Reference being had to the drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts in the respective views, the novel combination padlock is shown composed of a cylindrical bottom body porytion 1 and a top cylindrical portion of the Specification of Letters Patent.

The shackle 5 is shaped to the contour of the band ll and will be iiush ex teriorly therewith when held in locking p0- sition by said locking bolt.
9 designates a spacing or guide member which, as shown 1n Fig. 3, is semi-cylindrical in shape with the exception of an inwardly extending curvilinear offset 10 forming an opening adapted to register with a similarly shaped opening in the body portion 1. The member 9 is formed with spaced-apart prongs 11 which engage corresponding notches 12 formed in the body portion l so as to occupy the `position shown in Fig. 3 and so that the opposite free ends thereof, will at all times, bear against the immovable walls of the band el; the member 9 is also formed with an opening 91 for the passage therethrough of the locking bolt. The member 9 forms a seat upon which the shackle rests when in locked position. A plurality of screw bolts 14: are mounted on the body portion 1 and project above the band fi, which bolts engage corresponding openings in the topplate 2 and are suitably fastened thereto. On either side, preferably, and adjacent the inwardly extending offset 10 of the guide member 9 are alining studs or stops 15 between which is slidably mounted a locking bolt 16, said locking bolt carrying two inwardly extending stops 17 between which is suitably guided an upstanding stud Q9 carried at one end of a tilting lever 19 pivoted at 20 and carrying at its free end a similar upstanding stud 91, said lever arranged to advance or retract the locking bolt 1G between the guide members 15. The locking bolt 16 is formed at one end with a tongue 1S adapted to project through the opening 91 in the guiding member' 9 and take into the recess S in the shackle 5.` It will be noticed that a plurality of washers 30 are interposed between the tumbler disks, one of said washers being interposed between the top and bottom of said housing.

Reference being had to 5 it will be seen that the disks are designated 25, 2S, and 31, the disk 25 carrying at its top and bottom lugs 26 and 27 respectively at opposite sides or the center; the disk 2S therebeneath carries a top and bottom lug designatedV 29 and 30 respectively; while the bottoinmost disk 31 carries at its top a lug 301. rthe top disk 25 is formed with a recess 251, the disk 28 is formed with a similar recess 261, while the disk 31 has a recess 311.

The object of rotating the dial 34e, step by step determined by the consecutive letters of a name is to cause the Vlugs upon Veach dial to interengage, one after the other until all the recesses ot the disks have been brought into alinement, and then the spring-pressed stud 21 of lever'19 will be caused to enter said recesses thereby tilting lever 19 and as the dial 3l completes itsV movements, said lever will movel bolt 16 out of recess to enable the shackle to be disengaged.
llhe operation of the lock is extremely simple and easy to understand and is as follows: The dial 34.- is rotated in first one direction and then another until the depending lug thereon through the medium of the various lugs on the disks has caused therecesses of the several disks to aline to admit the stud 21 on the lever 19 which lug is ypressed toward said recesses by the spring `When said stud is in' said recesses aV turn of the dial will rotate all of the disks simultaneously and by means oi said stud throw the end otfthe lever having said stud vthereon inv such a direction that its other end, having the stud22 seated between the members 17 on the lock bar 16, will slideV said bar inwardly when unlocking the device and cause it to withdraw from the recess in the shackle whereby the said shackle is released Vt'rom its locked positie-n. he stud 21 is cylindrical and slightly smaller in circumference than the recesses in the disks.` consequently when the disks sequently the end 18 of the lock bar 16 is brought into engagement with the recess 8 in the shackle whereby the device will be held locked.
While I have shown the details of constructions now best known to me I do not wish to be limited strictly thereto for numerous modifications may be resorted to :falling within the spirit of the appended claim.
I claim-w In a device of the kind described, in combination, a housing, said housing being formed with a cylindrical opening at its top having its circumference tangent to the periphery of said housing, a vertical stud disposed in the bottom of said casing and having a reduced end, a plurality of washers mounted on said stud in spaced apart relation, a plurality of disks loosely mounted on said stud between said washers,
eaeh of said disks being formed with a similarly-sized notch, each notch having opposite rounded edges, a relatively large disk plate looselyT mounted on the reduced end of said stud and disposed flush with the top of said housing, a lever arm iulcrumed on the bottom of said housing, a pin carried by said lever arm, a depending pin carried by said large disk plate and projecting through an opening in said housing, inter-engaging pins carried by said other disks, and a spring arranged to press against the pin carried by said lever arm.
