Description

S. RODGERS.
I Tobacco-Gutters.
No. 157,106. Patented Nov.24,1874.
fimed [W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL RODGERS, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157.106. dated November 24, 1874; application filed June 24, 1874.
. To all whom it may concern:
' the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in
the Province of Ontario, Canada, machinist, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Gutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, whereby others skilled in the art may make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to this specification.
Myinvention relates to that class of machines or devices which are used for cutting or shearing tobacco, and comprises the following parts, viz: A lever or handle, which operates a knife or cutter; a platform or table with fence thereon; a gage or sizing bar, hinged, and having an uprightly-extending lug, by means of which it is pressed outward so as to admit of the tobacco when out passing through, and is provided with a spring to bring it inward to its normal position also,
a stand, upon which the parts are secured. A receptacle or dish is formed in this stand directly below the knife, so that the tobacco when shorn will fall therein.
In the accompanying drawing the same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the views, and also in this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of my machine, showing the stand A with recess a, the tableB with fence I), the main frame 0 with guide c, the handle D, the knife E, the gage or sizing-bar F, and spiral spring f. Fig. 2 is an elevation or side view, showing stand A, main frame 0 with guide a, handle D, the
knife E, gage or. sizing-bar F with spiral spring f. Fig. 3 is a plan of the machine, showing stand A with recess a, table B with fence I), handle D with stud e, a portion of gage or sizingbar F with regulating-screw f and spiral spring f. Fig. 4 is a plan of the machine without the handle D, in order to show more clearly the gage or sizing-bar F with regulating-screw f and spiral spring f, showing a space left between the face of bar F and knife E.
If'a cake of tobacco is now placed on the table B and moved endwise until it touches the face of sizing-bar F, and at the same time pressed edgewise against the fence I), in replacing and bringing down the handle D a thin slice of tobacco will be cut, equal in thickness to the space as regulated by the screw f between the face of the bar F and the cuttingedge of the knife E, and by repeating this process the cutting will go on in exact proportion to the speed and regularity of the motion given to the machine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the knife E, gage-bar F, hinged, and having an upwardly-extending lug, as shown, and provided with an adjusting-screw, f, and'springf, and the handle D, as heretofore specified and described, and for the purposes set forth.
