To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. DANSBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefierson and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Slicing-Machine, of which' the following is a specification- The present invention appertains to slicing machines, and aims to provide a novel and improved appliance for slicing bacon,
ham, and other meats, although it is to able and etficient manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide unique means for adjusting the gage block, whereby slices of various thicknesses can be cut.
A- further objectof the invention is the provision in a slicing machine, of a novel rind cutter, which will out off or remove the rind from the slice while the slice is beingcut.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a slicing machine having assembled therewith, novel means for sharpening the cutters While the machine is in operation, so that the cutters are kept sharp.
It is also within the scope 'of the invention to provide a slicing machine having the above named'features, and which at the same time, is comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, as well as being convenient, practical and eficient in use.-
With the foregoing and other objects in .view which willappear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and. n the details. of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirlt of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein a cross section taken on the line .4-4 of 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional detail taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6is an enlarged fragmental detail of'one end portion of the slide.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a suitable base 1, which is adapted to be set upon a table or other suitable support, and an upstanding guide frame 2 is hinged to one edge of the base, bymmeans of the hinges 3. A slide 4 disposed in a vertical plane is guided for reciprocatory movement within the frame. 2 along the above mentioned edge of the base 1, and the outer side of the slide 4 is provided with a handle 5 at the forward end of the slide. This handle 5 enables the slide to be readily actuated manually.
The slide 4 is provided with a triangular opening 6, whose lower edge is disposed adacent and parallel with the lower edge of the slide 4, and the larger end of the openmg 6 is arranged adjacent the rear end of the slide 4. The upper edge of the opening 6 is thus inclined rearwardly, and the inner side of the slide 4 is provided with a beveled or inclined seat 7 immediately above the upper edge of the opening 6. The main or slicing cutter or blade 8 rests against the inclined seat 7, and is secured thereto by means of bolts 9 engaging through the cutter and slide. The sharp or active edge of the cutter 8 projects slightly below the upper edge of the opening 6 to properly engage the bacon or other article which is being sliced.
An inclined thumb screw 10 is threaded through a nut 11 embedded within the forward end. of the slide 4, the nut 11 being cured to the said end of the slide, and a plunger 13 slides within the bore 14 which receive the screw 10. This bore 14 is drilled in the forward end portion of the slide 4, and eXtends to the upper edge of the seat 7, whereby when the screw 10 is threaded downwardly, it will force the cutter 8 downwardly. In this manner, when the cutter 8 wears away, it may be fed downwardly, the cutter 8 being provided with slots 8 through which the bolts 9 extend, whereby the cutter may be fed downwardly when the bolts 9 are loosened.
The frame 2 carries an angularly extending guide 15 arranged at right angles relative to the slide 4, and projecting over the base 1. This guide 15 isprovided with a series of transverse bottom rollers 16 upon I which the bacon or other article is arranged to rest. A series of upright anti-frictional rollers 17 are carried by the rear side of the guide 15, so as to have one edge of 'the'ba'con or article bear thereagainst. The anti-frictional rollers 16 and 17 thus support the 6 bacon or article, whereby the article may be readily fed toward the cutter 8, and will tend to gravitate toward the said cutter, when the guide 15 is inclined. Since the :guide 15 is carried by the frame 2, when the frame 2 is swung relative to the base, the [guide 15 may be readily inclined, without disturbing the cooperation between the frame 2 and guide 15.
' A bar or member 18 is disposed above those endsof the rollers 16 remote from the rollers '17, and is carried by the front side of *theflg'uide 15. The bar 18 is provided with a @pair ofoutstanding slotted members 19engaging bolts 20 carried by the forward 318.8"Of'tl16 guide, whereby when the bolts 20are loosened, the bar 18 may be adjusted to and from the rollers 17, according to the width or size of article. The bar 18 serves to -hold the article'against the rollers 17.
The bottom of the guide 15 is provided with'an 'opening'21, and a block 22 is hinged, --a's"at -23, to the guide 15 adjacent the open ing 21, whereby 'the block 22 may be swung in'tothe opening 20, or under the guide 15. When the block-22 is swung-into the opening 21fthe-g1lide15 may swing onto the base 1, "whereas if the block 22 is swung under the bottomof the guide, the block 22 will supporttheaguid'e -15 in an inclined position.
A triangular .gage board 24 is disposed within the opening-'6 of the slide, but is of "smaller area than the said opening, the lower edge of the gage board 24 seating 'slidably'upon'the lower portion of the slide 4 and the larger end of the board 24 being arranged adjacent the larger end of the opening. A slot is thus provided between the upper edge ofthe gage board 24 and the sharper cutting 'edgeof the cutter 8, and the "upper edge of the gage board 24- is properly'beveled, in orde'rthat the slice rein'oved by the cutter 8 will be-directed out "wardly through said slot.
In order to adjustably mount the gage board 24 within the slide 4, the board 24 is provided adjacent its smaller end, with a depending pin or 'lug 25 which slides in a diagonal slot-26rprovid'ed in the'lower portion of the slide 4, whereby whenthe board 2'4'is reciprocated,longitudinally o'f th'e slide .4, the smaller end of the board 24 will be shifted transversely of the slide. A plate 27 is secured'to the outer side of the board 24 adjacent the larger end of the board, and the 're'ar'end ofthe plate 27 is bent angula'rl-y or obliquely outward to provide an oblique or diagonal lip 28 which bears :a'gain'st the rear'end portion of the slide 4 at the larger end of the opening 6. The
slide 4 is provided with an upstanding pin 29adjacent the larger end of the opening 6, whereby the lip 28 is movable between the pin 29 and larger end of the opening 6, so
that the larger end of the board 24 is shifted transversely of the slide 4 when the board 24 is moved longitudinally. The inner side of the board 24is spaced outwardly slightly from the plane of theinner side of the slide 4, whereby when the slide 4 is 'drawn'forwardly to bring the board 24 opposite the guide'15, theb'acon or other article-in being I brought against the board 24, will be projected under the cutter 8. Consequently, by adjusting the board 24 transversely of the slide 4, the thickness of the-slice'cut-by'the cutter 8 may be regulated. Arcoiled wire retractile spring 30 connectsthe pin 29 and board 24, so as totend to pull the board 24 rearwardly and outwardly.

its rear end loosely engaged to the upper end of the lever 31. The forward end of the bar 34 isslidable through a staple or keeper '35 carried by the outer'side oftheslide '4 adjacent the handle 5, and the lower edge smaller endthereofyand the inneri-en'd of the'cutter or blade 39ris-rounded andsharpeneda's at'38. The sharpened'end 38 of'the cutter 37 projects inwardly beyond'the iiiner side ofthe board -24, and the :cutter 37 is arranged adjacent but spaced sufliciently 'from the lower edge of the -gage board 5 24' to properly remove the rind from the slice. downwardly will entersthe respective'notoh 39 for holding the cutter 38 in place properly. The cutter 38 may thus be adjusted in order that its sharp end 39 will project properly beyond the inner side of the gage board.
The sharpening means is carried by the frame 2, and to this end, the frame 2 is provided with an upright opening 41 at the inner side of the slide 4, and a board 42 has its lower end hinged, as at 42 to the frame 2 at the lower end of the opening 41.
The board 42 is adapted to be swung upwardly into the opening 41 and may be held therein in any suitable manner. An abrasive stone or block 43 is carried by the board 42 to swing or move into the opening 41, when the board 42 is raised. A bolt or equivalent element 44 is engaged slidably through the central portions of the board 42 and stone 43, and the stone 43 is provided with a recess 45 receiving the head of the bolt 44, whereby the bolt 44 will not engage the slide 4 or main cutter 8. A bowed leaf spring 46 has its intermediate portion engaged to the bolt 44 between the stone 43 and board 42, and the ends of the spring 46 bear against the ends of the stone 43 for yieldingly moving the stone 43 away from the board 42 and against the sharp edge of the cutter 8. The abrasive or sharpening stone 43 thus bears against the cutter 8, for sharpening the said cutter when the slide 4 is reciprocated, it being noted that the stone 43 is yieldably supported by the board 42, whereby the stone 43 may yield properly when necessary. The active face of the stone 43 is provided with a transverse slot 47 adjacent the lower end of the stone, through which the sharp end 38 of the rind cutter 39 is movable, and whereby the sharp end of the rind cutter will bear against the.
walls of the slot 47 when the slide4 is reciprocated, so that the rind cutter will also be sharpened. The two cutters are thus kept sharp, during the operation of the machine.
A plate 49 is secured to the frame 2 at the end of the guide 15, and has an outstanding sharp tooth or spur 48 which is adapted to engage the respective edge or portion of the article, for preventing the article from lifting or moving upwardly while being sliced. A toothed blade 50 is also preferably carried by the frame 2 at the lower end of the guide 15, and its teeth project slightly upward to assist in holding the bacon or article properly.
From the foregoing, it is believed that the operation and advantages of the present structure will be obvious to those versed in the art, without further comment being necessary.

In a slicing machine, a base, a frame hinged thereto and having an angularly extending guide for an article to be sliced, a slide guided by said frame and having a cutter, the guide having a lower opening, and a block hinged to the guide to swing within the said opening and to swing under the guide for supporting it above the base.
2. In a slicing machine, a reciprocatory slide having a slicing cutter, a gage member adj ustably carried by the slide, a rind cutter slidable through the gage member, the rind cutter having a series of notches, and a latch pivoted to the gage member and engageable in said notches for holding the rind cutter at various adjusted positions.
3. In a slicing machine, a reciprocatory slide having a cutter, a gage member carried bythe slide, the gage member and slide having interengageable means whereby when the gage member is slid longitudinally it will be shifted transversely, a spring con necting the slide and gage member whereby the gage member is moved in one direction when released, and means for moving and holding the gage member against the action of said spring;
4. In a slicing machine, a frame, a slide guided for reciprocatory movement thereby,
a slicing cutter and a rind cutter carried by the slide, and a sharpening member carried by the frame and arranged to sharpen both of said cutters.
5. In a slicing machine, a frame, a slide guided for reciprocatory movement thereby, a slicing cutter and a rind cutter carried by the slide, and a sharpening member yieldbearing against the slicing cutter, the sharpening member having a slot for receiving the rind cutter to sharpen the same.
6. In a slicing machine, a frame, a slide guided thereby, a cutter carried by the slide, the frame having an opening at one side of the slide, a member hinged to the frame to swing into said opening, an abrasive member to cooperate with said cutter, an element engaged loosely through said hinged and abrasive members, and a bowed spring engaged to said element and disposed between said hinged and abrasive members for yieldably moving the abrasive member against the cutter.
