Be it known lthat I, ICHABOD P. DUNHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVoodbridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Bread-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in bread-cutters.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive machine adapted to quickly cut slices of bread, cheese, and the like.
A further object of the invention is to enable the knives to be controlled and operated similarly to the ordinary hand-knife.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bread-cutter embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line oc of Fig. 2. Fig. i is a detail perspective View of the knife.
Referring' to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a frame comprising a bottom 2, a back 3, guides 4E and 5, arranged at one side of the frame on opposite sides of an opening (5 of the back and secured to the bottoni and the back and bracing the latter. The back is braced at the opposite side of the frame by a knee 7, and the frame is designed to be secured to a table or bench, and arranged between the guides Llc'and 5 is a block 8, which has its upper face flush with the bottom of the opening 6 and which supports the bread as the same is fed to a knife 9.
The knife 9 consists of a pair of blales 1l and 12, which are arranged parallel with each other and on opposite sides of the back 3 and which have their outer ends attached to a handle 13 and their inner ends connected by a bolt 14, and the latter is provided with an anti-'friction roller 15 and is arranged in a slot 1G of the back 3. The blades are arranged one above the other, the lower blade 11 being arranged on the rear face of the back and the upper blade on the front face of the back, and the cutting-edge of the upper blade is arranged opposite the upper odge of the lower blade. The distance between the blades is the thickness of an ordinary slice of bread, and the inner end of the upper blade is provided with a downward extension 17, and the outer end has a bend 1S and is secured in a slot of a handle 13 with the lower blade. The upper blade operates between the outer guide 5 and the hack 3 and in a recess 19 of the inner guide 1, and the lower blade is guided by the metal strips 20, arranged on opposite sides of the opening 6 and secured to the rear face of the back 3.'
The slot 16 consists of an inclined portion and a horizontal portion at the lower end of the inclined portieri and permits the knife to be drawn longitudinally and have a true cutting action similar to the ordinaryhand-knife, and the knife also has a downward motion. A shelf 2l is hinged to the rear face of the back and arranged below the opening and is adapted to receive the slices as they are cut from the loaf.
It will be seen that the cutter is simple and inexpensive and is adapted to sever two slices at each stroke of the knife, and is also adapted to cut bread, cheese, and similar substances.
lVhat I claim is- 1. The combination ol' the frame having a back 3, provided with an opening G, and the knife having a pair of blades arranged on opposite sides of the back, one of the blades being arranged above the other,substantially as described.
2. The combination of the frame having a back 3, provided with an opening G and having a slot 16, and a knife provided with upper and lower blades arranged parallel with each other and disposed on opposite sides of the back and having their inner ends connected by a bolt arranged in the slot, substantially as described.
3. rlhe combination of the frame having a back provided with an opening 6 and a slot lo', which has an inclined portion and a horizontal portion, and the knife having upper and lower blades arranged parallel with each other and disposed on opposite sides of the back and having their inner ends connected by a bolt arranged in said slot, substantially as described.
