3. .The improved manaclcs comprising a notched holder, a nut, pivote'd j'aw's adapted to be adjusted and locked in different positions in a holder and having short arms or extensions pivotally connected with the nut, a screw spindle with threads of opposite pitch engaging the nut and holder and a spring pressed pawl guided in a slot in the screw spindle land yarranged to c'o-opez-ate with notches inthe holder to lock the screw and jaws against movement in one direction, said p'a'wl being in the form of a plate disposed within the slot'and having portions of its edges projecting` at opposite sides thereof, said ,projecting edges being k'nurled to afford a gripping surface whereby the pawl may be withdrawn against the action of its spring.
