SNAP.
y Application filed .March 22,
Y This invention relates to improvements in snaps and has particular reference tosuch as may be employed for connecting a lead or leash with a dog collar or'harness,-one
object of the invention being to provide simple and etlici-ent means to prevent displacement of the spring which operates normallyto lclose the jaws of the device.
A further ob 'ect is to provide simple and l0 Veticient means to lock the relatively movable members of a snap of the type to which the invention relates. Y 'With these and other objects in view, the invention consists incertain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth andl pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings;-4 Figurel 1 is a view illustrating an embodiment of our invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view with the Vdevice closed and locked. e A
Figure 3 isa similar view showing thedevice unlocked and open, and f Figure 4 is a detail view.
The snap comprises twolevers 1 and 2 pivotally connected together at 3 and formed at their forward ends to provide jaws 4' which, when closed form an overlapping joint 5. z y j At their upper or rear ends, the levers 1 2 are provided respectively withV arms 6-'7, the arm 7 being provided with an elongated slot 8"through which the arm 6 passes and the latter is provided at its free end with a cross-head 9. A spring 10 is so cooperable with the levers 1-p-2 as to maintain the jaws of the device normally closed.
A cross-bar 11 extends across the slot 8 near V one end thereof and a tongue 12 on one end of the spring 10 engages over this` cross-bar in a manner to prevent longitudinal movement of the spring in one direction while longitudinal movement in the reverse direc-'k' Y tion is' prevented by the engagement of shoulders 13 on said spring withfthe lever 2. `The free end of the spring 10 engages in a i groove 111 inthe inner face lof the lever 1 and the sides wall of thisgioove will *pre K comprising p' tvvo` levers pivotally connected vent lateral displacementfof the spring.
i927'.v seriaiimiwie.
The leverarms'j-f'iare so interconnected 'that when vthe'snapwis closed, af'crotch 15 will be formed vand in this crotch,a locking Y device 16 is adaptedto engage lin a manner 55 This locking device may conveniently con-y to prevent the snap from being opened.
sist of sheetmetal, (preferablyV resilient) bent lupon itself to form two members 17-,-18 which are provided with openings 19 for the accommodation of the respective leverarins `6 7 and one 'of the members lof u the lock is provided with a laterally projecting lug 20 which' overlies the cross-head 9 on the arm 6 when the device is in locked position, as shown in Figure 2. :The members of the lock device are provided near ,their upper ends with holesffor the accommodation of an eye 21 and with the shank adapted to receive the lead or leash. It will be understood that when in use,the jaws-4C loop on the collar or'harness for adog.v
Having fully described our invention what lwe claim "as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:; y
1. A devicek of the .character described together and formed with jaws at their for'- ward ends, a slotted` arm projectingr from one of said levers,l an arm projecting from lthe other lever and passingV throughfsaid .of this eye, a loopfor ring'22ris swiveled and `will be vcaused to engagea suitable ring orVV l vcomprising two levers pivotally connected ing a laterally projecting lug toengage one n of said arms. Y
2. Ay device ofthe character described comprising pivotally "connected" levers` pro'- vided at ,onev end with'jaws, one of said ted arm and the other lever provided .with an arm 'passing through said .slotted arm andA having ya head at its free end, and a lock device `comprisingl two members vhaving vlevers provided at its other end with a slot?.
openings through which said arms pass and havingla lug to engage one of said arms.
3. A device'of the character described j v together and each having a jaw at one end, of said spring engaging the oppositelever one of said levers having a groove in its in' in the groove thereo. ner face, the other of said levers having an In testimony whereof, We have signed this 10 opening, a cross-har extending across said speclcatlon.
-5 opening, and a spring disposed between the levers and having a tongue atone end en- JOHN F. CARPMILL.
