Be it know'nth'at I, ANKER SJLYHNE, a citizen. of the United States,- residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of V 75 Connecticut, have inventedan Improvement in Vanity Boxes, of which the following is a specification; Th's invention relates to vanity boxes, and ,has for" an object to provide a box of this 10 type which will'fbe neat and attractive in appearance, light weight convenient to use, and will require a small space-only-in a ladys hand bag or ocket book.

The box comprises two cup shaped tions preferablymade of thin sheet metal and finished in any desired manner-with or without decorations on the outer walls thereof. In the showing in thedrawing, the thickness of the various walls .is somewhatexaggerated. The twosections of the box comprise the bodysection f0 and the.

The upper part of the side wall of the lower section 10 is rolled to provide a flange 14 of somewhat smaller diameter than that of'the body ofthe section, so'that it is I adapted to telescope within the cover section 11,- and also to provide a shoulder 15 to form a stop for the edge of the cover sec tion and to give a smooth continuous and neat appearance to the. outer walls of the box when the two sections are closed togather.

To provide for this I mount within the cover section a cupped lining 19 which may 'bese-Y cured in the cover section in any. suitable manner, but 1 preferably roll the side walls so as to rovide a bead or rim 20 which will snugly t the inner walls of the side's of the section, and when the lining is forced into this section it will be securely held therein Preferably in the center of the bottom of the cupped section I form a depression 21 within which is mounted the second ow'der compact comprisinga plate 22 on w ich is mounted the cake of powder 23. This compact is usually smaller than that carried in the body section as not as much of this powder is used as of the white powder;

Around the lower edge of depression 21 I locate an outward an guard 24 preferably substantia pwardly1 extending I y crescent shaped as shown in Fig. 4, and secure it to the cupped lining by any suitable means such as lugs 25 extending through openings in the lining and bent over on the under side thereof. A second puff 26 is carried by this cupped lining and retained therein by the guard 24. This guard Wlll also catch powder which is loosened from the compact by the puff. The side wall of the lining 19, as shown at 27, is somewhat smaller in diameter than the sides of the cover section so that when this lining is insorted in the cover section this side wall will be spaced from the side walls of the cover to allow the entrance of flange 14 on the body section between the lining and cover section. The lining is also provided' with an internal bead 28 spaced a suitable distance from the edge thereof upon whlch the cover 29 may rest when closed.

31 and 32 formed integral with the cover and lining and adapted to embrace the hinge in 33 in the usual manner. The cover 29 fits snugly within the open side of the lining 19 so as to seal the same and prevent powder in the cover section from leaking therefrom either to the body section or when the box is opened. Also, as this cover 29 fits the lining snugly, when the box is openedthis cover will be raised with the cover section and all that will be visible will be the white powder and puff, andthe mirror 30.. If it is desired to use any of the powder carried by the cover section the upper edge of the cover 29 may be drawn forwardl by the lip 34 giving access to the pow er and puff carried by this cover section.

I preferably slit the side-wall of the cover section as shown at 35 and press a small lug 36 in the body section to extend into th1s slit when the box is closed to form a catch to secure it in closed position. By pressing inwardly on the front of the side wall of the body section adjacent the lug 36, as shown at-37, the side wall of the body section will be sprung in sufficiently to re lease this catch and allow the box to open.

It will be ap arent from the foregoing that I have provided a box which will carry two different kinds of powder in separate sealed containers or compartments, so that the two kinds of powder will not mix but will always be kept entirely separate.

They are. also arranged in such manner that the boxis compact and so will not require a great deal of space. By spacing the lining from the cover section to allow entrance of the flange 14.- between these two elements, I have been enabled to greatly reduce the thickness or hei ht of the box when closed. It will also e apparent that the various puffs, powder compacts, and the mirror are easily accessible at all times.

Y Having thus described the nature of my invention, what I claim is:

1. A vanity box comprising cover and body sections adapted for telescoping engagement, one of said sections adapted to carry a powder compact and puff, a cupped lining for the other section s aced from the inner wall of the same at its ree edge to allow entrance of the free edge of the other section therebctween, said cupped lining adapted to carry a powder compact and puff, and a cover for closing said cupped lining.

2. A vanity box comprising telescoping body and cover sections, said body section being adapted to receive a powder compact and puff, a cup member mounted within the cover section and provided with a recess to receive a powder com act and pufl, a guard extending outwardly from and over the low er edge of saidrecess, and a cover for closing said cup member and movable therewith when the boxis opened. 1

3. A vanity box comprising hinged body 90 and cover sections adapted for telescoping engagement, said body section adapted to receive a powder compact and puff, a cupped lining secured in the cover section and provided. with a recess to receive a powder compact and pufl, an outwardly extending guard at one side of said recess, the free edge of said lining being spaced from the inner wall of the cover section to allow entrance of the free edge of the body member therebetween, said lining being provided with an inwardly extending bead around its side wall, a cover hinged to the lining and adapted to rest on saidhead to close said cup, and a mirror carred by said cover. 105

In a compact container, in combination, a flanged bottom member capable of receiv: ing a powder com act, aflanged top member hingcdly attache to the bottom member, a recessed member carried by the top member capable of receiving a powder compact, a mirror-carrying member hingedly attached to the recessed member capable of enclosure within the 'device in its closed position, said hinge being positioned other than at the hinge between the top member and the bottom member and a mirror carried by the mirror-carrying member.

5. In a compact container, in combination, a flanged bottom member capable of receiving a gowdercompact, a flanged top member hinge ly attached to the bottom member, a recessed member carried by the top member capable of receiving a powder compact, a mirror-carrying member hingedly attached to the recessed member capable of enclosure body. sections adapted for telesc'oping'engagement, one of said sections adapted to carry a powder compact and puff, a cupped member in the other section having 'anoutwardly extending bead around the side thereof below the free edge to engage the side wallsof the section to hold the member therein, the free edge of said member being spaced from the side wallsof the section sufliciently to allow entrance of the free edge of the other section therebetween, and a cover hinged to said -cup ed member and fitting within the open side thereof.

7; A vanity box comprisin hinged cover and body sections adapted or telescoping engagement, a powder containerin one of the sections having side walls spaced from the side walls of the section and arranged to telescope into the side walls of the other section toclose the same when the box is closed, and a cover for the container hinged to the container and fitting within the side walls thereof when in closed position.

8. A vanity box comprising hinged cover and body sections, 'a powder container mounted in one of the sections having side walls arranged to telescope into the side walls of the other section to close the same when the box is closed, and a hinged cover for the container arranged to fit within the side walls thereof when in closed position.

9. A vanity box comprising hinged cover and body sections adapted for telescoping engagement, a powder container in the cover section having side walls spaced from the side walls of the cover section and arranged to fit into the side walls of body section, a hinged cover for the container arranged to fit into the side walls thereof when in closed position, and a mirror carried by's'aid cover. 10. A vanity box comprising hin ed cover and body sections ada ted for te escoping' engagement, a cuppe powder container mounted in the cover scctlon having its side walls at its free edge spaced from the side walls of the cover section to allow entrance of the free edge of the body section and arranged to close said body section when the box is closed, and a hinged cover for the container fitting withinthe side walls there-,

A vanity box comprising hinged cover and body sections, a cupped powder container mounted in one of the sections having an external bead in its side walls to engage the side walls of the section and an internal bead inwardly of its free .edge, and a hinged cover for said container arranged to fit within the side walls thereof and rest on said internal bead when in closed position.
