Description

Patented Jan. 19, 1926.-
UNITED STATES PAUL ADOLF KAYSER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
KEROSENE HEATER.
Application filed August 15, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that PAUL Anew KAYSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kerosene Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to kerosene heaters and has as its special object the construction of a case wherein means are devised which will keep the kerosene reservoir in an upright position even though the heater be upset or turned upside down.
Another object is to provide in a novel manner a wick screw which will not interfere with the operation of the kerosene reservoir.
Other objects will be apparent from the accompanying drawing and specification.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the kerosene heater case showing the kerosene reser voir mounted therein.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the kerosene heater case showing the kerosene reservoir and wick screw.
Figure 3 is a vertical section of the kerosene heater case upset, the kerosene reservoir being in a vertical position.
In carrying out this invention I provide an outer casing 1 of usual construction and having provided in its lower half 2 bearings 3 thru which threaded pins 4 having reduced pivot points 5, are passed. The said bearings 3 are mounted directly opposite each other and on the same horizontal plane. A fiat metal ring 6 having bearings 7 incorporated therein and apertures 8 pierced therein, is pivotally mounted upon the pivot points 5 of the threaded pins 4. Passed thru the bearings 7 are threaded pins 9 having reduced pivot points 10 which are adapted to engage pivot bearings 11 that are secured to the kerosene reservoir 12. The bearings 7 are formed directly opposite each other at right angles to the apertures 8, and have all their center lines on the same horizontal plane, so that when the kerosene reservoir 12 is assembled in the casing 1 it will be perfectly aligned and balanced, so that the slightest tipping of the said casing will cause the said reservoir 12 to swing into a vertical position and Serial No. 50,380.
thus eliminate all danger of spilling kerosene when the heater is upset and possibly starting a fire.
In order to permit raising or lowering the wick as desired without undermining the principle as above described, a rather novel arrangement has been devised, which consists in mounting upon the wick screw shaft 13 the one half 14 of a jaw clutch. The other half 15 of the said jaw clutch is mounted upon a shaft 16 which is journaled in a bearing 17 that is secured to the outer side of the lower half 20f the casing 1. A coil spring 18 is mounted over the shaft 16 and is adapted to bear against the casing 1 with one end and against a hand wheel 19 which is mounted at the outer extremity of the shaft 16 with the other end. When it is desired to raise or lower the wick, pressure is brought against the hand wheel 19 until the half 15 of the jaw clutch engages the half 14, whereupon the said hand wheel 19 is turned in the desired direction. WVhen the pressure upon the hand wheel 19 is released, the coil spring 18 will throw out the clutch and return the shaft 16 to its normal position.
While I have herein described. a certain specific method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood same may be varied in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
In a kerosene heater as described, embodying a case, a kerosene reservoir in said case; bearings for said case; threaded pins with reduced pivot points engaging said bearings; a fiat ring pivoted on said pivot points; bearings formed in said fiat ring; pivot bearings for said kerosene reservoir; threaded pins with reduced points secured in the bearings of said flat ring, engaging the pivot bearings of said kerosene reservoir; a wick screw shaft for said kerosene reservoir; the half of a jaw clutch mounted on said wick screw shaft; a bearing on the outer side of said case; a shaft journaled in said bearing; the other half of said jaw clutch on said shaft; a coil spring on said shaft; and a hand wheel for said shaft.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
PAUL ADOLF KAYSEB.
