To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that BYRoN E. Bownus, a citi Zen of the United States, residing at Council Bl'ufls, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a speciii'cation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to window sash fasteners and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising acutely angled lever pivotally mounted in a casing mortised in the side of the sash, and having one of its arms provided with a member extending through an aperture in the sas and cooperating with an apertured plate carrled by the window frame for holdmg the windowsash in various positions, for ventilating purposes and preventing the window sash from being raised or lowered.
A further object is to provide leaf spring within the casing and cooperating with one of the arms of the lever for normally moving the lever to locked position, and a rotatable key operated cam cooperating with the spring engaged arm of the lever for moving the lever to inoperative position and holding the same in inoperative position.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment may be made within the scope of what is claimed withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 8 is a horizontal sectional view through a portion of the sash and window frame and the locking device taken on line 88of Figure l.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the window sash which may be the upper or lower sash, and 2 a portion of the window frame. Mortised into the rail 3 of the sash as at 4 is the casing 5 of the locking device. Pivotally mounted at 6 within the casing 5 adjacent its upper inner end is an acutely angled shaped lever 7. The arm Set the lever 7 is substantially vertically disposed adjacent the inner wall 9 of the casing and with which arm the leaf spring 10 carried by the wall 9 of the casing operates for normally forcing the free end of the arm 8 in the direction of the arrow a, for forcing the downwardly and 'outwardly inclined arm 11 of the lever 7 in the direction of the arrow 6, and its angularly shaped extension 12 outwardly through the opening 13 in the outer wall of the casing 9 where it will engage the window frame 2 bet-ween the stops 14 and be received in apertures 15 carried by the frame for holding the window sash 1 in various adjusted positions in a manner whereby the sash can not be 'aised or lowered, consequently the window sash may be locked and held in various open ositions sufficient for ventilating purposes, but at the same time, not open to the extent an unauthorized person may enter above or below the sash. Although the device has been described and shown in connection with one side of a sash, it is to be understood that as many of the devices as desired may be applied to the sash, whether upper or lower sash.
Rotatably mounted within the casing 5 is a cam 16 which cam is provided with pintles 17 which are rotatably mounted in opposite walls of the casing 5, however one of said pintles 17 is provided with a slot 18 in registration with an opening 19 in one side of the sash rail 3, and through which opening the key 20 is adapted to extend so its flat end 21 may be received in the slot 18 for rotating the cam 16. When the cam 16 is in the position shown in Figure 2, the lever 7 is moved to unlocked position however when the cam 1.6 is in the position shown in Figure 4, the locking lever 7 is in locked position and held in locked position by the leaf spring 10, therefore it will be seen that a positive locking device is provided. The key receiving aperture 19 may be provided with a key hole guard 22 for preventing marring of the sash frame when placing the key 20 therein.
From the above it will be seen that a looking device is provided for window sash, which is positive in its operation, and one which will positively hold the window sash and will practically be entirely concealed from view thereby not detracting from the appearance of the window sash, is key operated, and one which may be easily and quickly applied to a window sash without varying the construction thereof.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with a window sash, said sash being slidably mounted in a window frame, of a locking device for said sash, said device comprising a casing mortised in the side of the sash and having its outer side open, an inverted V-shaped lever pivotally mounted within the casing adjacent its up per inner corner, said lever having a down wardly extending arm adjacent the rear side of the casing, a leaf spring disposed within the casing and normally forcing said arm outwardly at its free end, a downwardly and outwardly extending arm carried by the V-shaped lever, said last named dl'lll terminating in an angularly shaped member cooperating with the window frame a cam rotatably mounted within the casing between the arms and cooperating with the .lll' i mentioned arm for forcing the same inwardly against the action of the leaf S] )].ll1g, said cam having its opposite sides provided with bosses rotatal'ily mounted in opposite *alls of the casing, one of said bosses registering with an aperture in the sash and provided with key receiving means.
