UNITED STATES 1,569,453 PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BRODY, OF NET/V YORK, N. Y.
NEEDLE.
Application filed ApriL-l, 1924. Serial No. 704,233.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM BRODY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 111 needles of the type employed for conduction anesthesia, and more particularly to means for securing the needle into its holder with a liquid tight joint.
Heretofore, it has been customary to form the head of this type of needle of soft metal, and when the nozzle was tightened the metal would flow or spread under the pressure and often extend the threads of the nozzle so as to make it impossible to remove the nozzle. This removal is necessary for sterilization of the needle, and if the needle cannot be separated, the entire piece, both needle and nozzle, must be thrown away.
An important object of this invention is to overcome these objections and still secure a liquid tight joint between the needle and the syringe.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above mentioned character which will be simple in operation and construction, strong and durable.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a view of a completely assembled needle ready for operation, parts being shown in section,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the needle, parts being shown in section,
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the same, and,
Figure l is a detail perspective view of the head element.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the usual syringe which carries the threaded nipple 6 which is provided with the centrally arranged longitudinal passage 7. The nozzle 8 is adapted to be screwed onto the nipple 6 and is provided with a central longitudinal opening 9 for the reception of the .10, This nozzle i p ovided with a socket 11 which is screwthreaded to receive the nipple.
Spaced from the butt of the needle is a head 12 which is formed of hard metal. This head is solid but for the opening 13 which receives the needle, and is adapted to be pressed on to the needle so as to form an integral part thereof, so spaced from the butt of the needle as to leave a portion i l of the needle projecting a considerable distance therebeyond. This head has a groove impressed into its top so as to form a sunken portion or depression 15, and a rim or ridge '16 about the edge of the head, which is preferably of cylindrical formation.
In assembling, the needle is slipped into the nozzle 8 as usual, and the rear or lower portion of the head will contact with the end wall of the socket 11 of the nozzle when the nozzle is screwed onto the nipple 6, and the end portion 14- of the needle will enter the passage 7 and serve to steady and straighten the needle. The rim or ridge 16 will contact with the front face of the nipple and completely surround the opening 7. The nozzle can be tightened to any extent desirable but the head will never give, and a liquid tight joint will be formed due to the fact that only a small portion of the surface of the head touches the nipple.
It will therefore be seen that I have provided a joint which absolutely leak proof. and which will allow of any amount of pressure being applied without any spreading on the part of the head, and there will be no difiiculty in removing the nozzle after operation. This allows for convenient sterilization and therefore renders the needle more hygienic.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, a needle adapted to be clamped against a syringe, and a head carried by said needle and spaced from its end, said ,"head having a portion of its top depressed to form a ridge adapted to form a small area of contact with the syringe.
2. In a device of the character described, a needle adapted to be clamped against a syringe, and a solid head formed of hard metal pressed onto said needle at a substantial distance from its end, said headhaving a groove pressed into its top whereby only a small portion of the top surface of said head contacts with the syringe.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a syringe having an opening in its face, of a needle adapted to be clamped to the syringe, and a solid head therefor, said head being spaced from the end of the needle whereby, upon clamping the needle to'the sy inge, the projecting portion of the needle will enter the opening in the syringe and fit snugly therein, and serve to straighten and steady said needle, said head having a large portion of its top surface pressed so as to form a dcpression, whereby only a small portion of the top surface of the head contacts with the syringe, thereby assuring a leak proof joint.
4:. In a device of the character described, the combination with a syringe having an opening, a nozzle adapted to be screwed onto the syringe, a needle received in an opening in said nozzle, and a solid head formed of hard metal, pressed onto said needle at a point spaced from its end, said head having the inner portion of its top surface depressed so that only a small. portion of the top surface of said head will contact with said syringe, and completely surround the opening therein, and whereby the nozzle may be tightened to press the head against the syringe without danger of the head giving or spreading.
' 5. In a device of the character described, a needle adapted to be clamped against a syringe, and a solid head of hard metal carried by said needle having a groove in its top surface whereby an annular ridge of very small area contacting with the end surface of the syringe nipple is formed.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a syringe having an opening, of a nozzle adapted to be screwed onto the syringe, a needle received in an opening in said nozzle, and a solid head of cylindrical formation formed of hard metal pressed onto said needle at a point spaced from its end, said head having the inner portion of its top surface depressed so that only a small portion of the top surface of said head will contact with said syringe and completely surround the opening therein, and whereby when the nozzle is tightened, a portion thereof will bear against the flat under surface of the head and force the top surface of the head into intimate contact with the syringe, without danger of the head giving or spreading.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination witha syringe having a screw threaded nipple provided with a central bore and a flat, unbroken end surface, of a nozzle adapted to be screwed onto the nipple, said nozzle having a recess provided with a fiat end surface and interiorly screw threaded to engage the screw threaded nipple, a needle received in an opening in said nozzle, and a solid head of cylindrical formation formed of hard metal, pressed onto said needle at a point spaced from its end, said head having the inner portion of its top surface depressed so that only a small portion of the top surface of said head will contact with said syringe and completely surround the opening therein, and whereby when the nozzle is tightened, the flat end surface of the recess therein will bear against the flat under surface of the head and force the top surface of the head into intimate contact with the flat end surface of the nozzle, without danger of the head giving or spreading.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
IVILLIAM BRODY.
