CORPQB'ATION OF WSCONSIN.
TRUNK FITTING. t
Application filed August 13, 1923. Serial No. 657,079.
To all 'whom t 'may concern Be it known that ff, @ponen HENRY Vitriniiiv, a citizen of the United States',
and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and useful improvements in Trunk Fittinos of which the following is a deb 7 ZD scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.'
rFhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trunk fittings and refers more particularly to the fitting e1nployed to mount the hinged top cover.
The type of fittings heretofore employed to mount the hinged top covers of wardrobe trunks have been objectionable in that the butt of the hinge projects beyond the trunk top a considerable distance being ungainly in appearance and cumbersome in handling of the trunk, and no positive means have been provided for excluding moisture from leaking past the point of connection of the hinged top with the fixed top.
Having the above and other objections in mind this invention has for one of its objects to provide a hinge fitting in which the butt thereof is set in the trunk whereby its projection beyond the surface is reduced to a minimum.
This invention has for another of its objects to provide a hinge connection or mounting for the hinge top whereby all moisture is prevented from leaking therepast.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a trunk fitting for mounting the hinged topl cover which extends across substantially the entire top thereof.
And a still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a trunk fitting of the character described which is, of ver simple construction, is well adapted for the purposes desired, may be manufactured at a minimum cost and in no wise mars the general appearance of the trunk.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such eli-anges in the precise embodiment pf ithe he, A1lis closed invention may "be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a wardrobe trunk provided with a hinged top cover mounted by my improved tting, and
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken through the fitting on the plane of the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying' drawings, in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates the drawer section of a trunk having theusual fixed or permanent top portion 6; ,and 7 the wardrobe section adapted to have its top closed by a hinged top cover 8 which is connected with the fixed top 6 of the drawer section by the improved fitting now about to be described.
As best shown in Figure 2, the hinged top cover 8 is channeled or grooved along its inner edge, as at 9, in which nests the butt or medial enlarged portion 10 of a hinged fitting 11, one part 12 of which is secured to top 8 by fastenings 13 and the other part 14 of which is fixed to top 6 by fastenings 15. With this construction butt 10 projectsonly a very slight distance beyond the surface of the trunk, thus tending to enhance its general appearance and avoid the annoyance of a relatively large projecting fitting.
As best illustrated in Figure 1, the hinged fitting 11 extends substantially across the entire top of the trunk and a rubber or other suitable member 16 is positioned between the butt 10 and the recess or channel 9 to prevent the passage of moisture therepast into the interior of the trunk, whereby an absolute water tight joint is provided.
As illustrated in Figure 2, the inner surface lof the `hinged :cover 8 may be provided yhinge' fitting adjacent. its butt With a cushion 17 which is preferably secured in position by a metal binding or other means 18.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it Will be readily obvious to those skilled in the art Yto which an invention of this character appertains,that-:I provide a trunk fitting ot' simple construction which is VVWell adapted for the purposesdescribed, is neat and attractive in appearance, insures against entrance ot' moisturev to the interior of the trunk, and eliminates theusual enlargement projected above the trunkI top.
What I claim as myI invention is:
1. A; trunk construction, comprising trunk sections yhaving meeting marginal edges, a continuous hingel tit-ting. connecting the meeting edges the hinge fittingl extending substantially the length of. the edges, and means engageable with theI hinge litting throughout itslength toprevent the passage of foreignl matter between. the trunk sections at thetting. v
2. Ina device of. vthe character described, including hijngedly connected members, a
hinge .iitting connecting the members and having a butt portion extending throughout its length, and means engageable with the portion throughout its length to prevent the passage of foreign matter between the members at the hinge fitting.
3. In a trunk including hingedly connected parts, a hinge -fitting connecting the parts and having its butt seated in a recess, and means within the recess for preventing the ,entrance ot moisture at the connection of the trunk parts.
et. In a trunlr having liz-red top par-t and a movable top part, a trunk iitting -hingedl'y connecting the movable top part with the hiredI top part, Vsaid iitting having a butt part, and means engaging the undertacev of the fitting adjacent theV butt part to prevent leak-age of moisture therepast V5. In `a. trunk, tivo trunk parts, a recess in the top tace of one part adjacent its inner edge, a hinge itting including two pivotally connected parts, the pivotal connection be- `tween the fitting .parts crming un enlarged butt adapted to nest in said recess, means securing one fitting part to one trunk part and the other fitting part to the other trunk part, and a packing member seated in the recess to prevent the past the itting but-t.
Intestirnony whereof I affixmy signature.
