To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL E. REED, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tubs for Cider Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tubs for cider presses. In cider presses it is customary to provide a tub of reticulated construction for holding the polnace while thejuice is being forced out of it by pressure and the present invention relates to the construction of the tub used for this purpose. One object of my invention is to provide a tub composed of hinged sections or halves connected together to hinge from one end of the tub with the axis of the hinge disposed transversely of the tub, whereby the sections may be swung apart at the bottom to quickly release the charge of pressed pomace after the juice has been extracted. Where the tub is of solid construction, as in former practice, it is difficult to dislodge the body of pomace after it has been subjected to the extreme pressures employed in extracting the juice, especially as there is a tendency for the pomace to be forced between the slats or bars of the tub. In the present case the tub sections are adapted to swing outwardly at the bottom end which is sutiicient to release the pomace because when the pressing operation has been cornpleted the pomace will then he in the lower half of the tub and there is usually none at the top of the tub when the pressing operation is completed. The advantage in swinging the sections open at the bottom is that the pomace is released more readily than if the sections were opened on a hinge line or axis extending vertically as has been proposed in other devices. Another object of my invention is to provide a simple undeflicient clamp for drawing together and hold-' ing the bottom ends of the tub sections in closed position-during the pressing operation and which may be quickly opened notwithstanding the great pressure caused by the pressing of the pomace into one end of the tub. The novel clamp is so constructed that it may be not only readily released but when. it is closed the outward pressure of the pomace tightens the clamp and prevents it from acciden al y releasing the s i s 1924. This clamp, while forming an important part of the full combination of my invention is also adapted to be used in various other relations where it is desired to draw two wires or straps toward each other. Other advantages of the invention will be set forth in the following detailed description:

head l which is forced down by the screws 5 which may be operated by hand or by power means. slats or bars 6 having spaces 7 between them through which the juice may be forced and these bars are connected near the top by means of a band or hoop formed in two sections. One section 8 passes around half the tub and is suitably riveted or otherwise connected with half of the upright bars of the tub, and the other section 9 of the band passes around the other half of the tub and is riveted or otherwise bolted to the upright bars of this half of the tub the band being provided with handles 10 by which the tub may be bodily lifted. At opposite sides of the tub and where the separate halves join, the band members have up wardly extending projections 11 overlapping each other and through these there is a hinge pin 12 permanently attached. The two hinge pins 12 on opposite sides of the tub determine the axis on which the tub sec tions pivot and it will be observed that this axial line is transverse of the tub so that when the two halves swing on the hinge they move outwardly or inwardly at their lower ends, the movement at the top of the sections The tub comprises vertical being relatively slight. Near the lower ends of the several-bars 6 I provide aband or strap 14 which extends partly around the tub and it is also riveted to the bars 6 of the tub approximately half of its circumference and the free ends 15 of this section are separated slightly from the bars of the tub to provide space for the band section 16 which is riveted to the bars of thetub on one of the half sections thereof. There is a strap or' band 17having one end hooked or otherwise connected as shown at 18 with the free end 15 of the strap 14 and the other end of this section 17 is secured around a pin 19 carriedby the clamp 20. There is another strap section 21 having one-end 22 looped through or otherwise connectedwith one ofthe free'ends' of the strap 14 and the other end of the member 21 is looped around or otherwise connectedwith a fork shaped bar 23 which extends. beyond and around the pin 19 whenthepartsiare' in the position indicated in the drawings, and the ends of this fork shaped member 23 are passed through the arms 24 of a yoke forming part of the clamp member.
The clamp consists of the yoke 24 extended to form'a ha'ndle lever25 whi'clila'tter is concave in cross section in order thatit may straddle the strap member: 21' when the clamp is closed. The ton and bottom of the fork arms 24 are turned at right angles to project toward the tuban'd the edges'26 of these projections are curveddnorder to have a rockingiengagementwith the fixed strap 16.-
These projecting members-27 also receive'the" pivot pin 19*a s well asrthe endsof the fork-: shaped member 23.
The device is: shown in' the closed position in theseveralfigures, with th'e clamp. closed to hold the lower ends of the tub in the closed positioniwith the'severa-l bars of the tub extending ve:rtically.- In this condition the tubis adapted to-receive' a charge-of pomace, either loose'or preferably in-a cloth sack, and after the pomace has=been placed in the tulo' the head is forced down by thescrew 5 to compress the pomace and extract the juice; which passesout' between the bars of the tub' and through the bars 2' of the platformon which thetub rests; The'pres sure exertedon tl'ie pomac'e'bythe'head cre ates a strong outward press'ure on the bars of the tub-and as between the two halves of the-tubthe pressure-is resisted at the top of the'tubbythe hinge connection and atthe bottom of'the tub. itis resisted by the straps and by'the clamp device. Having described my invention, what I claim'is:
1. A tub for cider presses comprisingbars,.strap members eachconnected with the bars of one section of the tub; pivotal connections between said strap members whereby separate sectionsof the tube may pivot fromaline-adjacent one end of the tub, the pivotal line extending transversely of the tub, a strap'member attached to the bars adjacent the opposite. end of one of the tub' sections, a strap attached to the bars adjacent the end of the other tub section and having endsoverlapping said last mentioned strap, and a clamp for drawing on said ends of the last mentioned strap to hold the tub sections in closed position.
2. A tub for cider presses comprising bars, strap members each connected with the bars of onesection of the tub, pivotal con nections between saidstrap members whereby separate sections of the tub may pivot froma-line adjacent one end of the tub, the pivotal line: extending transversely of the tub; a strap'member attachedito the bars ad jacent the oppositeend of one of thetub sections, a strap attached to. theba-rsadj acent the end of. the other tub: section and having. ends-overlappingsaidllast mentioned strap; an'da clampfori drawing on said ends oi thelast mentioned strap' to'; hold the tub sections in closed position, said clamp being adapted to lie against said first mentioned strap.
3. A tub for cider presses comprising bars, strap members each connected with the bars of one section of the tub, pivotal connections between said strap members whereby separate sections of the tub may pivot from a line adjacent one end of the tub, the pivotal line extending transversely of the tub, a strap member attached to the bars adjacent the opposite end of the tub for drawing the sections together in closed position, a clamp pivotally connected with the ends of said laststrap member and adapted to be swung to draw said strap sections toward each other, said clamp having a curved rocking edge for engaging the tub.
i. A clamp for drawing toward each other the ends of straps, cables or the like, comprising a fork having a handle, a strap or the like having a pivotal connection, with the fork adjacent the point of bifurcation, a strap or the like having a pivotal connection with the outer ends of said fork, the positions of sai'l pivotal connections being such that when said handle is in closed position against one of said straps, the line of pull between said straps will resist the opening or releasing of said clamp.
5. A clamp for drawing toward each other the ends of straps, cables or the like, comprising a fork having a handle, a strap or the like, having a pivotal connection with the fork adjacent the point of bifurcation, a strap or the like having a pivotal connection with the outer ends of said fork, the positions of said pivotal connections being such that when said handle is in closed position against one of said straps, the line of pull between said straps will resist the opening or releasing of said clamp, said clamp h i g a curved rocking edge on which the clamp may have a rocking engagement with a surface when being opened.
