WALL-REGISTER CONSTRUCTION.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT IV. SYMoNDs,
a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall-Register Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wall register construction, and has for its object to provide means for the substantially air-tight installation of a wall register upon a stack head to prevent leakage of dust, and to provide a register so mounted, in connection with the aforesaid installation, as to provide ready access to all of the parts of the register and to the stack head itself for the purposes of cleaning and the like.
In addition to these objects my invention embraces a two-part register frame, whereof the primary frame is to be secured to the stack head, the secondary frame is hingedly secured to said primary frame, and the valve 7 and valve-operating grille are both hingedly connected to said secondary frame. The secondary frame and the grille are preferably stamped from a single sheet of metal, for
the purposes of speed and economy in quantity production; while the secondary frame has an integral reticulated marginal por tion to permit of a standard grille of uniform size being employed in any desired number of different sizes of register, employing as-many sizes of secondary frames. Other novel features of my invention will appear from the following detailed description and from the claims.

Description.
As shown in the drawings, the construction of my invention is intended for use upon the vertical wall of a room, whereof in Fig. 1 I have indicated the baseboard as 6, the vertical studs as 77, the lath as 8, and the plaster as 9. The relationship of these parts to the subject matter of my invention is apparent upon reference to Fig. 2, whereon in I have indicated the horizontal discharge opening of the stack head as 10, and the wall frame which forms the base of my register elements I have indicated as A. This wall frame A embodies an inner mouth 11 having a thin metallic lip 12 (see Fig. 3) which is arranged to be folded over the flange 14 of the primary frame B to lock the same in place, in the manner indicated by the numeral 14 in Fig. 2.
Continuing the construction of the wall frame A we note that it is folded upon itself as shown at 15, to grip the walls of the stack head mouth 10, and it is also contoured to form a groove 16 in which the outer wall 17 of the primary frame B is to be seated as shown in Fig 2. The outer wall 18 of the groove 16 is projected to a point where it will be in alinement with the finished surface of the plaster 9 as shown in Fig. 2, and a locking engagement with the plaster 9 is formed by the beveled wall 19 provided with slots 20 which serve as a ground in which the plaster may be keyed in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2. From the outer base of the beveled wall 19 the flange 21 projects and is secured to the studding 7 and beneath the lath 8 as shown in Fig. 2. The object of the described construction of the wall frame A is to form a practically air-tight and leak-proof connection between the stack head and the surrounding plaster, thus preventing the leakage of dust and dirt into the room from the stack head 10 with the consequent defacemcnt and deposit of dirt upon the outer face of the plaster 9, or wall paper or other covering which maybe used thereon.
The primary register frame B being mounted upon the wall frame A in the manner above described, it is provided with a means for hingedly supporting the secondary or swinging frame C, and the parts carried by said secondary frame C. This means consists of a hinge D, the construction of which is shown in detail in Fig. i; said hinge D comprising its upper terminal loop 21 pivoted at the mouth of the primary register frame B. Extending downwardly, the hinge D is provided with a body portion 22 which is to fit within the upper transverse bar of the secondary register frame C and to be suitably attached thereto, preferably by spot-welding. At its bottom, the hinge D has the terminal loop 23 which is suitably mounted in therolled top terminal edge 2%- of the valve E.
Also carried by the secondary frame I provide the valve-operating grille F wlnch is swingingly.mounted upon the transverse rod 25, the ends of the rod 25 being welded or otherwise secured to the secondary frame Gas illustrated in Fig. 2. The grille F is secured to said rod 25 by means of a plate 26 and screws 27 27 extending through the plate 28 of the grille F into said plate 26, this construction being such that the tension existing between the grille F and the rod 25 may be controlled and adjusted by loosening or tightening said screws 27-27.
The opening and closing of the valveE by the tilting of the grille F is accomplished by the use of links 33, their outer ends being pivoted to the grille F at 34 and their inner ends being pivoted to the valve E at 35.
It will be noted that my invention embodies the type of register employing a single valve E, which is opened or shut by tilting the grille F, this grille F being usually tilted by the foot of the operator and forming a convenient foot rest whereon the foot is held in the path of the heated air being ejected by the stack head 10. 'In
order to provide for the standardization of manufacture of my invention, it is intended that the grille F shall be of the same size regardless of the variation in sizes of the valve E and secondary frame C. Accordingly, the space in which the grille F is mounted, and which I have indicated in F l by the numeral 28 shall always be the same in these various sizes, and. that the secondary frame 0 shall be provided with ornamental reticulations 2929 to freely admit the passage of heated air when the valve E is in opened position.
To secure the secondary frame C in position for'normal operation I have provided a locking plunger 80, preferably formed of a single piece of Wire bent upon itself to form the thrust pin 31, the looped enlargement (to prevent its withdrawal. from place in the lower horizontal bar 38 of the secondary frame C), and the terminal finger hold 34.

It will be noted that the entire construction above described is formed by stamping, as it is one of my primary objects to dispense withthe use of castings for obvious reasons relating to lightness and cost of production. I further desire to provide (as I do by means'of my hinge element D) for giving ready access to the interior of the stack head 10, to enable it be cleansed. This is accomplished by releasing the locking plunger 30 by an upward pull upon the finger hold 34 and. then raising the econdary frame G,'wi th its attached valve E and grille F, to elevated position. The interior of the stack head 10 and other desired surfaces having been cleansed, the secondary frame C will be dropped to closed position and there locked by a downward push upon the locking plunger 30.
Various structural changes may be made in practicing my invention without departure from that invention as definedin the appended claims; the form illustrated and described herein being merely the preferred embodiment of my invent on.
Claims.
I claim 1. The improvement in wall register construction comprising a wall frame arranged to be telescopically mounted over a stack head of ordinary constructionand having a marginal beveled flange provided with plasterengaging apertures.
2. The improvement in wall register construction comprising a stack head; a wall frame telescopically mounted on said stack head and provided with a mouth of sheet flexible material arranged to receive a wall register and to be engaged therewith by folding over the marginal edges of said mouth.

A wall register construction comprising a stack head; a wall frame mounted on said stack head; a primary register frame having a substantially air-tight mounting upon said wall frame; a secondary frame hingedly mounted upon said primary registcr frame; and a valve and operating means therefor carried by said secondary frame.

A wall register construction compris ing a stack head"; a wall frame mounted on said stack head; a primary register frame having a substantially air-tight mounting upon said wall frame; a secondary frame hingedly mounted upon said primary register frame; a single valve fitting said secondary frame and hingedly secured to said frame;
and a tilting grille pivotally mounted in said secondary frame and arranged to open and close said valve.
5. A Wall register construction comprising a stack head; a wall frame mounted on said stack head; a primary register frame having a substantially air-tight mounting upon said wall frame; a secondary frame hingedly mounted upon said primary register frame; and a valve and operating means therefor carried by said secondary frame in combination with means for locking said secondary frame in place upon said primary frame.

A wall register construction comprising a stack head; a wall frame mounted on said stack head; a primary register frame having a substantially air-tight mounting upon said Wall frame; a secondary frame hingedly mounted upon said primary register frame; a single valve fitting said sec ondary frame and hingedly secured to said frame; and a tilting grille pivotally mounted in said secondary frame and arranged to open and close said valve in combination with means for adjusting the tension of said grille upon its pivot.
7. A wall register construction comprising a stack head; a wall frame mounted on said stack head; a primary register frame having a substantially air-tight mounting upon said Wall frame; a secondary frame hingedly mounted upon said primary register frame; and a valve operating means therefor carried by said secondary frame, the hinges employed in securing the primary and secondary frames to each other and to the Wall frame being formed of a single metallic strip secured to the primary frame and having hooked terminals engaging with the wall frame and with the secondary frame.
