Our invention relates to a register for wall heaters and is a continuation-in-part of our copending application Serial No. 43,124, filed April 7, 1948, entitled Register for Wall Heaters. Included in the objects of our invention are:
First, to provide a register for wall heaters wherein the transfer of heat from the hot air duct to the adjacent wall structure is minimized while permitting maximum louver area and minimum marginal area.
Second, to provide a register of this character in which the louvers fit into a special frame so arranged that it may be adjusted to compensate for differences in lateral spacing between the hot air duct and the adjacent wall while effecting a seal between the hot air duct and a surrounding cooling jacket.
Third, to provide a novelly arranged and inherently attractive louver frame structure which incorporates an outwardly invisible louver retainer.
With the above and other objects in view, as may appear hereinafter, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of our register with the surrounding wall shown fragmentarily and with a portion of the register shown in section.
Figure 2 is a partial sectional view through the wall adjacent the register with the register shown in elevation, the section being taken along the line 22 of Figure 1.

Our hot air register includes a hot air duct 1 which is adapted to be set within a wall structure. The lower end of the duct is open and communicates with a floor furnace (not shown). The duct I includes side walls 2 which traverse the wall structure in which the register is mounted. The upper extremities of the side walls 2 are connected by a top baiile 3 which is V-shaped in cross section.
A space is provided between the side walls 2 and the adjacent wall structure. In this space is positioned a vertical shield 4 comprising an inner plate 5 and an outer plate 6. The outer plate may lie contiguous to the wall studding S. The plates are joined .together at their lateral margins so that they define an air space. The upper extremities of the plates 5 and E are joined respectively to top plates or cross plates 1 and 8. In addition, a third top plate 9 may be provided. The top plates underlie a cross member 0 which forms part of the Wall structure and extends between the studding S.
The top shield plates l and 8 define an opening Iii directed laterally or outwardly from the wall structure in which the register is mounted.
The lower portions of the side walls 2 of the hot air duct are joined by cross plates II. The side walls 2, top baffle 3, and cross plates ll, of the duct, define the lateral openings directed into each of the rooms separated by the wall structure in which the register is mounted.
Each outlet opening from the hot air duct is covered by a louver frame l2 comprising a top member 13, side members or structures [4, and a bottom member l5. The side members or structures hi are substantially channel-shaped in cross section to form an outer or major flange is which is adapted to contact the plaster P or other material comprising the surface of the wall structure. The web of each side member [4 is provided with a shoulder I! so as to divide the web longitudinally into an extended face I8 and a recessed face it. The recessed face 19 is joined to an inner or minor flange 20 which is parallel with the outer flange l6 and is adapted to lit in contiguous confronting relation with the corresponding margin of a side wall 2 so as to seal the interior of the duct from the space between the duct and the wall structure.
The shoulders I! of each corresponding pair of side members it are provided with slots which receive louver plates 2|. The louvers extend across the opening to the hot air conduit and in front of the recessed faces l9 so that these faces are concealed by the louvers.
The extremities of the louvers 2! are hidden within the side members l4 between the shoulders l1 and the outer flange It. The louvers are yieldably held in place by means of spring plates 22 secured to the inner flanges 20 and projecting therefrom so as to overlie and bear against the extremities of the louvers.
It is preferred that the margins of the side walls 2 of the hot air duct diverge downwardly and outwardly from the wall structure and that the louver frames be arranged so that the outer flanges it increase in depth toward their lower ends. The lower portions of the outer flanges 16 are provided with cold air intake ports 23 which communicate with the space between the hot air conduit I and the wall structure. Such communication is facilitated by additional ports 24 provided in the shield plates and 5.
The thickness of the wall structure in which the heater is placed may vary materially. This may be due to differences in the dimensions of the studding or the differences in the thickness of the plaster which covers the wall structure. It is desirable, however, that the outer flanges of the louver frame fit snugly against the wall so as to present a neat appearance. By reason of the fact that the inner flanges 2!} are in contiguous confronting relation with the side walls of the hot air duct the louver frames may be adjusted inwardly or outwardly into conformity with the wall surface without creating an opening between the hot air duct and the space between this duct and surrounding wall structure. This is important for the reason that an opening of any magnitude at the margin of the hot air duct would permit an undesirable large quantity of hot air to flow into the space between the duct and the surrounding wall structure and thereby unduly heat the wall structure.
Reference is now directed to the modified construction shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8. This construction differs over the previously described construction in that the shoulders ii are not slotted and the louvers are mounted on an inner or subframe. Such subframe includes vertical angle members or side strips 3| which are adapted to overlie the recessed faces 9. The modified louvers 32 extend between the side members 3! and are cut and bent at their upper corners to form tabs 33 adapted to overlie the side members or strips 3| and be spotwelded or otherwise secured thereto. It can be seen that the side members 3i and louvers, form a unitary structure which may be set into the space between the shoulders I I. In order to retain the louver struc ture in place, the upper extremities of the side members 3! may project through the top member [13 of the louver frame as shown in Figure 6.
It will be observed that the sealing arrangement between the louver frame and the margins of the hot air duct is accomplished without requiring louver frame side members which have the appearance of being excessively wide.
It will be observed that the louvers extend in front of a portion of the side frame so that the side member appears to be relatively narrow.
It will be observed that the spring plates 22 provide a simple, yet effective, means of holding the louvers in place against accidental dislodgement but permit their removal at any time, should this be desired. For example, the recessed face [8 may receive attachment screws which are hidden by the louvers but are rendered accessible by means of the removable arrangement of the louvers.
It should also be observed that heretofore it has been difficult or impractical to so incline the louvers as to make them sight proof from normal viewing angles for such inclination (essentially the inclination shown) is virtually at right angles to the air stream tending to issue from the air duct; consequently, the air on impinging on the flat inner face of the louver tends to fiow laterally. Such lateral flow into the space between the air duct and wall structure is pre- 4 vented by our arrangement without introduc tion of other undesirable features.
Having fully described our invention, it is to be understood that we do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth, but our invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. A register for wall heaters comprising: means defining a laterally opening hot air duct having vertical side members, said hot air duct adapted to be positioned within a wall with said vertical members spaced therefrom to minimize heat transfer to said surrounding wall; a louver frame adapted to cover the opening from said air duct and the space between said air duct and surrounding wall, said frame having side members including an inner flange in sliding engagement with the corresponding side wall of said duct, a stepped web forming a recessed inner margin a raised outer margin and an intervening shoulder, and an outer flange its extremity adapted to confront said wall adjacent air duct, the side member isolating the space between said duct and wall from the interior of said duct; and louvers extending between the side members of said louver frame across said recessed portions into said shoulders. v

A register for wall heaters, comprising: means defining a hot air duct set in an opening in a wall structure and discharging outwardly therefrom; heat shield means at the sides of said duct spaced from said duct and from the confronting margins of said Well opening; a louver frame overlyin the periphery of said duct and said wall structure contiguous to said opening, the sides of said louver frame including an inner flange slidably engageable with a side of said air duct, a stepped web outwardly from said inner flange forming a recessed portion and an extended portion interrupted by a shoulder, and an outer flange adapted to engage said wall; and louvers extending between the sides of said frame across said recessed portion and penetrating said shoulders.
3. A register for wall heaters comprising: means defining a hot air duct set in a wall and opening laterally therefrom, and including vertical side members; a louver frame having side members each including an outer flange engageable with a wall adjacent said hot air duct, a shoulder slotted to receive the extremities of louver slats, a recessed wall, and an inner flange disposed in laterally adjustable contiguous relation with the corresponding side member of said duct; and louver slats extending between the side members of said louver frame across said recessed walls and through the slots in said shoulder.
4. A register for wall heaters comprising: means definin a hot air duct set in a wall and opening laterally therefrom, and including vertical side members; a louver frame having side members each including an outed flange engageable with a wall adjacent said hot air duct, a shoulder slotted to receive the extremities of louver slats, a recessed wall, and an inner flange disposed in laterally adjustable contiguous relation with the corresponding side member of said duct; louver slats extending between the side members of said louver frame across said recessed wall and through the slots in said shoulder, and a sprin clip fastened to each louver frame side member and yieldably engageable with the extremities of said louver slats.

A register for wall heaters, comprising means defining a hot air duct set in an opening in a wall structure and discharging outwardly therefrom; heat shield means at the sides of said duct spaced from said duct and from the confronting margins of said wall opening; a louver frame overlying the periphery of said duct and said wall structure contiguous to said opening,,the sides of said louver frame including an inner flange slidably engageable with a side of said air duct, a stepped web outwardly from said inner flange forming a recessed portion and an extended portion interrupted by a shoulder, and an outer flange adapted to engage said wall; louvers extendin between the sides of said frame across said recessed portion and penetrating said shoulder; and a spring clip fastened to each inner flange underlying said recessed portion and engageable with the extremities of said louvers which penetrate said shoulder.

A register for wall heaters comprising: mean defining a laterally opening hot air duct having vertical side members, said hot air duct adapted to be positioned within a wall with said vertical side members spaced therefrom to minimize heat transfer to said surrounding wall; a frame adapted to bridge the space between the opening from said air duct and the surrounding wall, said frame havin vertical side structures of channel shaped cross section, each including a minor inner flange and a major outer flange in substantial parallelism and a stepped web connecting said flanges to form a recessed inner portion and a raised outer portion and a shoulder joining said recessed and raised portions and extending parallel to and between said flanges, said inner flanges being in slidable overlapping engagement with the vertical side members of said duct and the extended edge of said outer flange, adapted to confront the surface of said wall bordering said air duct, the vertical side structures of said frame and the vertical side members of said duct coacting to isolate the space between said duct and wall from the interior of said duct; and louvers extending between the side structures of said louver frame and covering said recessed portions whereby the apparent width of said duct opening is the space between the shoulders of said stepped webs.

A register for wall heaters, comprising: means defining a hot air duct having vertical sides, said hot air duct set in an opening in a wall structure and discharging outwardly therefrom; heat shield means at the vertical sides of said duct spaced from said duct and from the confronting margins of said wall opening; a louver frame overlying the periphery of said duct and the surface of said wall structure contiguous to said opening, the vertical sides of said louver frame covering and spaced from said heat shield and including an inner flange slidably engageable with a vertical side of said air duct for movement into contact with said wall, a stepped web outwardly from said inner flange forming a recessed portion, a raised portion and a connecting shoulder between said portions and an outer flange adapted to engage said wall; and louvers extending between the sides of said frame into abutting relation to said shoulder and covering said recessed portion whereby the apparent opening of said register in the space between said shoulders.

A register for wall heaters, comprising: means defining a hot air duct set in a wall and opening laterally therefrom and including vertical side members; a louver frame having side members each including an outer flange engageable with a wall adjacent said hot air duct, and inner flange disposed in adjustable contiguous relation with the corresponding side member of said duct, and a bridging web between said outer and inner flanges, said web having an inner recessed portion, an outer raised portion and a shoulder between and connecting said portions; and louver slats extending between the side members of said louver frame into abuttin relation with said shoulders and covering said recessed portions whereby the apparent opening of said register is the space between said shoulders.

A register for wall heaters, comprising: means defining a laterally opening hot air duct having vertical side members, said hot air duct adapted to be positioned within a wall with said vertical members spaced therefrom to minimize heat transfer to said surrounding wall; an outer louver frame adapted to bridge the space between the opening from said air duct and the surrounding wall, said frame having vertical side structures of channel shaped cross section, each including a minor inner flange and a major outer flange in substantial parallelism and a stepped web connecting said flanges to form a recessed inner portion and a raised outer portion and a shoulder between and connecting said portions and substantially parallel to said flanges, said inner flange being in slidable engagement with the vertical side member of said air duct and the extended edge of said outer flange adapted to confront the surface of said wall adjacent air duct, said side structures isolating from the interior of said duct the spaces between the vertical sides of said duct and wall; an inner louver frame having side angle members disposed in the recessed inner portion of said outer louver frame; and louver slats extending between and secured to said side angle members their extremities covering the recessed inner portion of said outer frame and abutting the shoulders thereof.

A register for wall heaters, comprising: means defining a hot air duct having vertical sides, said hot air duct set in an opening in a wall structure and discharging outwardly therefrom; heat shield means at the vertical sides of said duct spaced from said duct and from the confronting margins of said Wall opening; an outer louver frame overlying the periphery of said duct and said wall structure contiguous to said opening, the vertical sides of said louver frame including an inner flange slidably engageable with a vertical side of said air duct, a stepped web outwardly from said inner flange forming a recessed portion, an extended portion and a, shoulder between and connecting said recessed and raised portion, and an outer flange adapted to engage said wall; a subframe including side strips adapted to overlie said recessed portions; and louver slats extending between and secured to said side strips overlying said recessed portions and abutting said shoulders.

A register for wall heaters, comprising: means defining a hot air duct set in a wall and opening laterally therefrom, and including vertical side members; a louver frame having vertical side structures, each including an outer flange engageable with a wall adjacent said hot air duct, an inner flange disposed in adjustable contiguous relation with the corresponding vertical side member of said duct, a stepped web between said inner and outer flanges, said web having an outer raised portion and a shoulder between and connecting said recessed and raised 7 portions; a. louver structure including louver slats extending between the side structures. of said louver frame across and covering the recessed portions of said stepped web and side strips joining said louver slats together and overlying said recessed portions.
