Description

J. D. PAYNE ARTICLE HOLDER Filed Sept. 18. 192.4
LllllllILJIIHIHHILIIHHTW Patented Dec. 8, 1925.
JOHN D. PAYNE, OF NEVJ YORK, N.
ARTICLE HOLDER.
Application filed September 18, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN D. PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Article Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in article holders and has reference more particularly to a means for supporting a newspaper, book or any other periodical in such a position as to enable the reader to be comfortable while reading.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an article holder of the above mentioned character, which is adapted to be readily and easily attached to the belt of the wearer for supporting the periodical in front of the person, means being further pro vided for adjusting the periodical supporting member in a vertical plane in order to bring the periodical closer to or away from the eyes of the person thus relieving any strain of the eyes and enabling the periodica-l to be read in a comfortable position.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article support of the above mentioned character, which may be readily collapsed when not in use to permit the same to be carred around by the person, the device being further of such construction as to enable the same to be readily and easily set up for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article holder of the above mentionedcharacter, which is simple in construction inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the article holder embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view through the laterally extending supporting arm showing the upper end of the brace associated therewith.
Figure. 3 is a bottom plan view of the laterally extending supporting arm, and
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the article Serial No. 738,453.
holder showing the same in a folded posi- 1.1011.
In the drawin wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred emextension 8 for engagement with the belt of the wearer. Hingedly supported at its inner end on the outer face of the upright 2 ad acent the angular member 3 is the laterally extending article supporting arm 4.
The hinged connection therefor is illustrated 7 at 5. The laterally extending supporting arm 4 is of a suitable length and adapted for slidable adjustment on the outer end thereof 1s the transversely extending arm 6, the same being provided with a longitudinal slot 7 for 7 cooperation with the adjusting bolt 8 which 1s carried by the outer end of the lateral supporting arm 4. The supporting arms 4 and 6 provide a means whereby a newspaper,
a book or magazine may rest thereon while the same is being read.
For the purpose of holding the newspaper or other periodical on the supporting arms, against displacement therefrom, the spring actuated finger 9 is associated with the sup porting arm 4 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 1. The finger 9 is pivotally supported intermediate its ends in a pair of brackets secured to the opposed sides of the supporting arm 4 and an axial coil spring such as is shown at 10 is provided with the pivotal supporting means for the finger for normally holding the forward end thereof in engagement with the periodical resting on the outer end of the supporting arm 4 and the auxiliary supporting arm 6. The rear end of the finger 9 provides a means for releasing the forward end thereof from engagement with the periodical in order to permit the removal of the same from the article holder.
The bottom face of the laterally extending supporting arm 4 is provided with the rack teeth 11 and secured to the bottom of the laterally extending supporting arm 4 on opposite sides of the rock teeth 11 are the angular guide flanges 12 and 13 respectively, the purpose of which will be presently apparent.
For the purpose of adjusting the support-- ing arm 4 in a vertical plane whereby the 119 newspaper or other periodical resting on the outer end of the supporting arm may be moved closer to or away from the eyes of the person, the brace 14 is provided. The lower end thereof is fitted in a suitable socket member 15, the latter being provided with a reduced extension 16 which is pivotally supported in the bifurcated lower end 17 of the upright 2 by means of the transversely extending pin 18. The upper end of the brace 14: is provided with a substantially T- shaped head 19 and the latter is adapted for slidable movement between the angular guide flanges 12 and 13. The upper edge of the T-shaped head 19 is further adapted for engagement with the rack teeth 11 whereby as heretofore stated, the laterally extending supporting arm 4 may be held in any desired adjusted position. The angular guide flanges 12 and 13 will prevent the disengagement of the T-shaped head 19 from the rack teeth 11.
Then assembled, the article holder may be readily and easily attached to the belt of the person desiring to use the device and when a periodical is placed on the supporting arms and held thereon by the clamp or spring finger 9 the person may maintain a comfortable position while reading.
When not in use, the article holder may be readily collapsed and folded in the manner as shown in Figure 4 of the drawing whereby the same may be carried around on the person without occupying a considerable amount of space.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that an article holder has been provided which may be readily and easily assembled and adjusted to the proper position on the body of the user, the parts being so arranged as to permit the ready and easy adjustment of the same whenever necessary.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is An article holder of the class described comprising a belt engaging device including a part to bear against the outer face of the belt, and a clip to engage over said belt, a horizontal arm hingedly connected at its inner end to the belt engaging device, spaced guide channels secured to the under side of said arm, rack teeth formed between said channels, a cross piece adjustably connected to the free end of said arm, a spring pressed clamping finger connected with the intermediate portion of the arm, and a diagonal brace pivotally connected at its lower end to the belt engaging device and having its upper end formed with a head disposed between said channels and cooperable with said teeth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
