Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NEHEMIAH HAWKINS AND GERRIT V. ORTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKET-ELEVATORS.
Specieation forming part of Letters Patent To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, NEHEMIAH HAwKINs and GERRIT V. ORToN, both of the city of Chicago, State of Illinois, have invented Improvements in Elevator-Buckets, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention consists of improvements in the ends of elevator-buckets by forming them of thin metallic material, doubled, and filled with Wood or other substance, firmly riveted together, making a very light and strong end, and ,onethat the shell of the bucket can be fastened to by nails or screws. Our invention further consists in protecting the mouth or front edge of the bucket with a steel guard, the object being to resist wear from constant use, and also to strengthen the same.
To more fully describe our invention, as also to explain the manner of constructing the same, allusion will be made to the drawings accompanying these specifications, and form-v ing a part thereof, of which- Fignre l is a perspective view of our improved bucket with a portion of one corner torn away to more fully show the inner construction of the e'nd B. Fig. 2 is a view of the end B of our improved bucket. Fig. 3 represents the steel guard E separated from the'mouth of our improved bucket. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section of the end B, showing the lling F and the opening S formed to receive the frames G and D.
No. 156,421, dated November 3, 1874; application led April 6, 1874.
In the construction of our improved bucket, we rst form the ends B B of a single piece of thin metal, folding the same as shown in Fig. 4, filling up the space between the two sides with wood F, leaving the opening S to receive the frames C and D, which are made of wrought-iron, with solid corners at cc ac cc fc, and which, when in place, overlap each other in the middle of end B, andare held together and to the ends by means of the rivets y y. The shell A is then riveted to the frames O and D, and nailed to the ends B' B, or fastened by screws, as may be preferred. The guard E is then held in position by being riveted to the frame U, as shown in Fig. l. a a. are holes made through the shell A and frame D for bolts to fasten the bucket to the belt or carrier in the usual manner.
We claimas our invention- 1. The metallic end B, filled with wood or other suitable material, in the manner described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the ends B B, the shell A, the front and back frames O and D, and guard E, in the manner set forth.
