UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
ISAK WIGREN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
FOLDING BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed November 11, 1904, Serial No. 232,334.
'Box, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved knockdown or folding box especially adapted for use for delivering groceries and other articles which are put up in small packages or which are to be delivered in bulk.
The improved box in its preferred form is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved box set up for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the improved box folded into flat or knockdown form. Fig. 3 is a detail in section on the line m m of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective, illustrating the construction of one of the hinge members.
The numerals 1 and 2indicate the four sides of the box, and the numeral 3 indicates the folding bottom thereof, which bottom is hinged to one of the side members lfor folding movements against said side member, to which it is hinged. The side members or plates 2 are shown as provided with the usual hand-holes 1, which adapt the box to be lifted and firmly held by the hands. At diagonally opposite corners of the box the side plates 1 and 2 are hinged for folding movements by rectangular hinge members 5, formed by bending a rod into rectangular form. The horizontal upper and lower sections of these hinge members 5 when the box is set up extend diagonally across the corners of the box, and the vertical leg members thereof are pivotally attached to the side plates 1 and 2 inward of their abutting edges by metallic clips or hinge-loops 6, the ends of which are passed through said side plates and are clenched on the inner surfaces thereof, as best shown in Fig. 3. 'The said Vertical portions of the hinge members 5 are preferably countersunk, atleast partially, into the side plates, to-which they are attached. At the other diagonally opposite corners of the box the side plates 1 and 2 are pivotally connected for folding movements by rectangular hinge-rods 7 the horizontal portions of which are preferably bent to form rectangular offset sections 7,
that are rigidly secured to the side members 1 by metallic anchoring-clips 8, that are riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to said side members 1 at the upper and lower edges thereof. One vertical leg or portion of each hinge member 7 is also preferably secured to one of the said side members 1 by means of the clips 6,'c'onstructed as before described. The other vertical leg portions of said hinge members 7 are pivotally secured one to each side plate 2 by clips 6 of the same character as those applied to connect the hinge members 5 to the side plates. These hinge members 7 pivotally connect the side plates 2 to the side plates 1 at offset points, so that when the box is folded, as shown in Fig. 2, space will be left between the said side members 1 and 2 into which the bottom plate 3 of the box may be folded, as shown in said Fig. 2.
\Vhen the box is setup for use, as shown in Fig. 1, the corners thereof are rigidly braced by the hinge members 5 and 7. When the box is folded, as shown in Fig. 2, the hinge members 5 turn into the same planes as the side members 1 and 2, which they pivotally connect.
The construction described, while strong, durable, and generally efficient for the purposes had in view, is of small cost.
From what has been said it will be understood that the box described is capable of modification within the scope of my invention as herein set forth and claimed.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. A folding box having its four sides connected for toggle-like folding movements by means of hinge members, the hinge members of diagonally opposite corners being of rectangular form and arranged to completely embrace the corners of the box and having parallel legs attached to the sides of the box inward of their vertical edges, whereby the sides of the box may be folded together and whereby when the box is set up, its corners will project through the said rectangular hinge members, substantially as described.
2. A folding box having its four sides connected for toggle-like folding movements, by means of hinge-rods bent to form parallel legs, the said hinge-rods at two of the diagonally opposite corners of the box being journaled to the abutting portions of both .of the sides which they pivotally connect, and the hinge-rods at the other two diagonally opposite corners being rigidly secured to one of the sides which they pivotally connect, and being jou'rnalecl to the other of the said sides, substantially as described.
3. The combination With a box made up of the four sides 1 and 2, of the hinge-rods 5 bent to form parallel legs applied to pivotally connect the sides at two of the diagonally opposite corners of the box, said rods being journaled to said side Walls, by clips 6 located in- Ward of the abutting edges of said sides so that the horizontal portions of said hinge-rods 5 extend diagonally across the corners of the box, When the box is set up, the rectangular hinge-rods 7 at the other diagonally opposite corners of the box, rigidly secured to the sides I 1 and journaled to the sides 2, by means of clips 6, located inward of the edges of said sides 2, so as to afford offset hinges, and, a box-bottom hinged to one of said sides 1, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
ISAK WIGREN.
