My invention' relates to separable cuff but- Ytons. The main object of myinvention is to provide a cuff button., the parts of which will-becomesecurely locked togetl'ieron relative-tilting` thereof. So'far as I am aware no one has hitherto provided a separable cuffvbutton which will securely lock on` relative tilting' movement of the-component members thereof alone.

A further object of my iii-- vention is therefore to Eprovide a separable cuff button which when'locked becomes im- `possible, to separate during normal use thereof As stated, when theresiliently, slidably mounted memberfisemployehthe heads or cooperating complementary 'latch 1portions of saidmembers will lbecome coupled and an angle to one another vafter said portions are brought into Contact 'with each other and said membersare manually tilted in any direction. "Where the resiliently slidably mounted member is 4omitted however, ythe cooperating' complementary latch portions will become merely coupled, and .said members will not be securely inter-locked at an annie to each other after `said portions are brought linto contact with each other and said members are manually tilted, but will be free t0 pvotr on each other, although lthe members will be securely inter-locked at f while coupled7 it is obvious that it will be impossible to separate said members on a straight axial pull of each member.
A further object of my invention is to provide a cuff button which through all possible universal movements thereof will conform to the angularity of the cuff whether a soft cuff or a stiff cuff be employed. n A further object of my invention is to provide a separable cuff button which can be inserted and locked in any way or in any position in day-light or darkness.
As described above, I slidably resiliently mount a stud having an end projecting into the socket of the female member and I provide a cooperating annular ridge on the upper surface of the head of the male member. These cooperating features perform several functions. When the members are relatively tilted to locked position, it is obvious that the end of the stud will be resiliently pushed exterior of the ridge in the stud of the male member. To centre said members to unlock, it is therefore necessary to exert sufficient force to push the end of the slidable stud in the female member over the ridge in the stud of the male member against the pressure of the spring. The slidable stud therefore serves as a means to keep the stud in locked position. When it is desired to separate the members, the bases of said members are grasped between the fingers and sufficient force is exerted to axially align said members, the end of the stud being pushed against the pressure of the spring over the ridge in the head of the male member into the cup shaped depression formed therein between the edges of said ridge. The ridge being of a sufficient size to just receive the head of the slidable stud to accurately7 axially align said members. this position the spring will push the stud downward to tend to separate said members. As the central hole of the socket of the female member is of a slightly larger diameter than the diameter of the head of the stud of the male member it is kobvious that the edges of the head of the stud of the male member may slide past the edges of the lip of the female member thus permitting separation of said'members the spring actually assisting therein.v l
Further objects of my invention therefore are to provide a separable cuff link which can be readily unlocked by mere axial alignment of said members.
A further object of my invention is to provide a construction which will `function without any protruding parts or levers to catch or tear the cuffs. v
A further object of my invention is to provide a construction wherein the stem of the` male member comprises a flat head and not a long projecting stem as in former It 1is obvious that when in types which makes insertion of the male member into the cuff a difficult operation.
A further object of my inventionis to provide a workable structure having no projecting knobs or partson the base of said membersso as not to interfere in any way with the placing of the usual desirable designs thereon and thus to provide a very neat finished article.
A further object 'of my invention is to provide a separable cuffl button which can be locked and unlocked by mere grasping of the bases thereof between the lingers without the necessity of inserting the fingers between the cuffs to soil or dirty them.
These and such other objects of my invention as may hereinafter appear will be best understood from a description of an embodi ment thereof such as shown in the accompanying drawings.

As seen in Fig. 8, l provide the oiircular washer 51- adapted to be inserted in the base 24. The shank 20 is provided with the radially projecting'l flange 56 which is adapted to be seated within the base 2st over the washer 54 and to be secured thereto by .having` the lips or upstanding sides 58 of the base 24 crimped over as at G0 to secure the flange 56 of the shank 20 to the base To provide a shank head of greater strength, I preferably construct thel shank and integral head of the male member by a series of operations performed on blanks as illustrated in our former Patent #1,188,211. lhe shank shown in Fig. 8 therein being given one further operation to bend lown the upper layer 84,1 in close proximity to the lower layer 35 as heretofore described, thus providing,- a shank hearing,r an outer end of double tliickness of metal readily constructed accordinp; to the improved process of maniifacturingr `on screw machines. The stein ft2 of the stru-d member 4t() is then inserted thi-fougrh the holle 36 in the head of the male member in the hollow shank 20. The lower portion of the stem of theV stud member 4.() may be channelled as at 61. Though any means may be provided to sccure the stem 42 wi-thin the shank 20, I preferably lill up the hollow shank with solder G2 filling` in the channels 61 in the base of the stemy 42 of the stud member 40 and filling in the space 64 between the two layers of metal. 84 and 35 in the head.
The shank 22` of the female member constructed with the base 'flange 70 identical in construction to the base flange 56 of the male member and the lowerV end thereofl terminates in an arcuatel-y radially spread out flan-ge 72, the lower portion 74 beine` bent back on itself over the upper layer 7G to foam. a strengthening radially inwardly pi'ojecting` flange '74 terminating in a central hole 78. The shank 22y is thus also constructed iln accordance with the method outlined in Patent #1,188,211 and the additional operation `inst described. l preferably form a circumferential groove 79y on the outer upper surface of the upper layer 7(5) for a purpose to be described. I provide the base 26 of the female membery identical in constructionto the base of the male mem ber j-ust described and l insert therein the annular washer 80,. provided with the central hole 82 and in said central hole l'insert the base 84@ of the spiral spring 86, the hole 82 in the washer being` provided to centre said spring. rlhe base'flange 7 0 is then inserted within the base 26 over Vthe spiral spring 86 and washer 30, and the upper ends of the sides 88. of the base 26- are then crimped over `as at 90 to firmly secure the shank 22, washer 80 and spring- 86 therein. l then mount the slidable stud member $12 within the hollow shank 22, the base 94: thereof resting against the top 96 of the slidable spring 86. The stud member v92 is of a general cylindrical shape but near its outerend is made of a smaller diameter to prov-ide the shoulder 98 for a purpose to be described and has its outer end preferably tapered to the point 100. I then insert the washer 102 provided with the central hole 10d of a diameter slightly greater than that of the lower end of the slidable stud 92 over the lowery layer 74 of the flange 72 of the shank 22. I secure said washer 102 within the shank 22l by the dome shaped cap 106 which has the functions later to be described. The upper edge of the side of the dome shaped cap is provided with the straight edge 108 adapted to be crimped. over the circumferential groove 7 9 in the upper layer 76 of the radial shank flanpje 72 thus permitting the edges of the washer 102 to rest in the seat 110 provided. therefor in the dome shaped cap and firmly secure all parts of said members of the femaley niember together in assembled position. rEhe lower surface of the wall 112 of said cap forms a convex surface 1111 adapted to. cooperate with the concave guiding-` surface 88 of the head of the male member. The lower portion of said wall terminates in a central. circular hole 116 of slightly greater diameter than the head d4- of the stud 40 of the male member to form a substantially semii spherical socket 118 havingl an annular arcuate lip 120. The female member when sembled thus comprises the base 26 having;l the shank 22 terminating in a radially spread out flange 72, the lower portion Ulli.; thereof being bent backen itself over the upper layer 76to form a streng;thening4 'inwardly projecting Hangs terminating in the central 1101678, an annular washer l02pro vided with a central hole 104 resting on the lower surface 74 of said flange, a dome shaped cap 106 secured over said washer 102 to said radial shank flange 72, the lower surface of the wall 112 thereof forming a convex surface 114 to cooperate with the concave guiding surface 88 of the male member and the lower portion of the wall 112 terminating in a central circular hole 116 of slightly greater diameter than the head 44 of the stud 40 of the male member to form a substantially semi-spherical socket 118 having an annular arcuate lip 120 adapted to register in a port-ion of'the annular space 122 formed by the guiding flange 32 and head 44 of the stud of the malo member to retain said male and female members together when relatively tilted olf centre in use, a washer 80 centrally mounted in the base thereof having a central hole 82 to centre the base 84 of the spiral spring 86 therein and the stud member 92 slidably mounted in the hollow shank 22 thereof having the base 94 resting on the top 96 of the spiral spring 86 and the head 100 thereof projecting into said socket 118 having the shoulder 98 adapted to abut the edges of the hole 104 in the washer 102 to limit the downward movement thereof and a pointed head 100 adapted to resiliently spring within the cup 50 contained within the annular ridge 48 on the head 44 of the male member to axially align said male and female members 14 on relative tilting thereof to permit withdrawal of the lip 120. of the female member 14 over the head 44 of the stud 40 of the male member to permit separation of said members.
Though I have described in detail the preferred embodiment of my invention and illustrated in detail how it may be readily constructed on a screw or other type of automatic machine, it is obvious that other means of assembling, of connecting the various members may be employed, and that any suitable type of spring meansto actuate the slidable stud 92 may be employed. My invention broadly comprises as explained a separable cuff button having cooperating male and female portions adapted to securely inter-lock after said portions are brought into contact with each other and said members are manually tilted and if also desired moans on said members to relatively axially align said members to permit and assist in separation thereof.
Though I have shown the cooperating male and female members of my invention as the connecting members of a separable culf button, it is obvious that they may be used as the connecting members of any type of separable fastener without departing from the spirit of my invention.
rlhe operation of my invention is obvious from the above description. Figs. 1-5 show a separable button employing my invention in the act of being separated. The bases 24 and 26 may be conveniently grasped by the lingers exterior' of the cuff 28 and the members 12 and 14 axially aligned as shown in Fig. 8. s heretofore explained the point 100 `of the slidable stud member 92 projecting exterior of the ridge 48 when in locked position serves with the resilient pressure of the spring 86 to keep said members in locked position, it being` necessary in the operation of axially valigning said members just explained to push the end 100 of the slidable stud member 92 over the ridge 48 of the stud 40 of the male member against the pressure of the type of spring means employed. Then the point 100 has slid over the ridge 48 the pressure of the spring 86 will immediately force the point 100 within the cup 50 to axially align said members, as shown in Fig. 8. The spring 86 still functioning` will serve to push the stud 92 downwards in the hollow shank 22, the pressure of the spring 86 thus raising up the lip 120 of the socket 118 of the female member over the edge of the stud of the male member untilthe shoulder 98y abuts the edge of the hole 104 in the washer 102 limiting the downward movement of the stud. The parts at this juncture will assume the position shown in Fig. 4, the end 100 of the stud still registering within the cup 50 in the head 44 of the stud 40 of the male member. The male and female members may then be readilypushed apart to the completely unlocked position shown in Fig. 5.
To lock it is obvious that mere reversal -of these operations is necessary. The members 12 and 14 are brought into position with the male portion adjacent to the female portion thereof andv may be pressed axially by the fingers as shown in Fig. 5 through the position Kin Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 3, the end 100 of the stud 92 registeringwithin the cup 50, and the stud 92being pushed up against the'pressure ofA the spring 86 within the shank 22 until the convex surface 114 of the female member 14 engages the complemental concave guiding surface of the male member 12. l/Vhen'the parts are in this position on relative tilting movement, the end 100 of the stud 92 is drawn out of the socket 50 over the ridge 48, the cooperating concave and convex surfaces 38 and 114 sliding over each other in any direction and the lip 120 registering in the annular space 122 formed between the convex lower edge 52 of the stud 44 and the concave guiding surface 88 of the flange 82. A separable cuff button, comprising two cooperating malerand female members each having a heada shank and a base, the head of said male member comprising a n cup-shaped guiding flange projecting inteminating in a central hole', the upper surface thereof forming a concave guiding surface and a stud member having a stem mounted centrally of said shank having a mushroom shaped head having a flat upper arcuately ou surface provided with a central annular ridgeand a convex lower surface offset from said concave guiding surface, the shank of the female member terminating in a radially spread out flange, the lower portion thereof being bent back on itself over the upper layer to form a strengthening radially inwardly projecting flange tern'iinating in a central hole, an annular washer provided with a central hole resting on the lower surface of said harige, a dome ed cap secured over said washer to said radial shank flange, the lower surface of the wall thereof forn'iinga convex surface to cooperate with the concave guiding surface of the male member and the lower portion of said wall terminating in central circular hole of slightly greater diameter than the head of the stud of the male member tov form a substantially semi-spherical socket having an annular arcuate lip adapted to register in a portion of the annular space foii'ined hctween the guiding flange and head of the stud of the male member to retain said members together when relatively tilted, a washer mounted in the base of the female member having a central hole, a spiral spring having the base thereof resting within said hole and a stud member slidaby mounted in the shank thereof having the base thereof resting on the top of the spiral spring and the head thereof projecting into said socket having a shoulder to abut the edges of the hole in said washer to limit its downward movement and a pointed head adapted to resiliently spring within said annular ridge on the head of the stud of the male member to axially align said members on relative tilting thereof to permit withdrawal of the lip of the female member over the head of `the stud of the male member. l
l2. llt separable cuffbutton, comprisingtwo cooperating male and female members, each having a head, a shank and a base, the head of said male member comprising a cupshaped guiding flange projecting integrally twardly and upwardly from the shank thereof, the upper surface thereof forming a concave guiding surface and a stud member having a stem mounted centrally of said shank having a mushroom-shaped head having a flat upper surface provided with a central annular ridge and a convex lower surface offset from said concave guiding surface, the shank of the female member terminating in a radially spread out flange, an annular washer provided with a central hole resting on the lower surface of said flange, a dome shaped cap secured over said washer to said racial shank flange the lower surface of the wall thereof forming a convex surface to cooperate with the concave guidino' surface of the male member and the lower portion of said wall terminating in a central circular hole of slightly greater diameter than the head ofthe stud of the male member to form a substantially semi-spherical socket having an annular arcuate lip adapted to register in a portion of the annular space formed between the guiding flange and head of the stud of the male member to retain said men'ibers together when relatively tilted, a washer mounted in the base of the female member having a centralhol'e, a spiral suringhaving the hase thereof resting within said hole and a stud member slidably mounted in the shank thereof haring the hase thereof resting on the top of the spiral spring and the head thereof projectingl into said socket having a shoulder to abut the edges of the hole in said washer to limit its downward movement and a pointed end adapted to resiliently spring wit-hin said annular ridge on the head ofthe stud .of the male member to axially align said members on relative tilting thereof to member over the head of the stud of the` male member.

A cuffl button, having a male member comprising a head, a shank and a hase, the head thereof comprising a cup shaped guiding `ange projecting integrally arcu-ately outwardly and upwardly from the shank, the upper portion thereof bein-g bent back on itself over the lower layer thereof to form a strengthening radially inwardly projecting flange terminating in a central hole, the upper surface thereof forming a concave guiding surface and a stud member having a stem mounted centrally of said shank having a mushroom shaped head hav-ing a flat upper surface provided with a central annular ridge and a convex lower surface offset from said concave guiding surface.

A. cufl` button, having a male member comprising. ahead, a shank fand* a. base the head thereof comprising a cup-shaped guiding flange projecting integrally arcuately outwardly and upwardly from the shank, the upper surface thereof forming a concave guiding surface and a stud member having a stem mounted centrally of said shank having a mushroom-shaped head having a flat upper surface provided with a central annular ridge and a convex lower surface offset from said concavev vguiding' surface.

A cuff button, having a male member comprising a head, a shank and a base, the head thereof compr' ing a cup shaped guiding flange projecting integrally arcuately outwardly and upwardly from the shank, the upper surface thereof forming a concave guiding surface and a stud member having a stem mounted centrally of said shank having a mushrooi'n shaped head having a convex lower surface offset from said concave guiding surface. f
18. A cuff button, having a member comprising a base, a shanlr and a flange projecting concavely upwardly from said shank and a stud member projecting therefrom having a flattened head offset from said flange.

A cuff button, having a female member con'iprising a base, a head and a shank, the shank thereof terminating in a radially spread out flange, the lower portion thereof being bent back on itself over the upper layer to form a strengthonimy radially inwardly projecting flange terminating in a central hole, an annular washer provided with a central hole resting on the lower surface of said flange, a dome shaped cap cured over said washer to said radial shank flange, the lower surface of the wall thereof forming a convex surface, the lower portion of said wall terminating` in a central circular hole, a washer centrally mounted in the base thereof having a central hole, a spiral spring having the base thereof resting within said hole and a stud member slidably mounted in the shank thereof having the base thereof resting on the top of the spiral spring and the head thereof projecting into said socket having a shoulder adapted to abut the edge of the hole in said washer to limit its downward movement and a pointed head projecting within said socket.

A cuff botton, having` a female member comprising a base, a head and a shank, the shank thereof terminating` in a radially spread out flange, an annular washer provided with a central hole resting on the lower surface of said flange, a dome shaped cap secured over said washer to said radial shank flange thelowersurface of the wall thereof forming a convex surface the lower portion of said wall terminating in a central circular hole, a. washer centrally mounted in the base thereofhaving a central hole, a spiral spring having'V the base thereof resting within said hole and a stud member slidably mounted in the shank thereof having the base thereof resting on the top of the spiral spring and the head thereof projecting into said sockety having a shoulder adapted to abut the edge of the hole in said washer to limit its downward movement and a pointed head projecting within said socket.

A cuff button, having a female member comprising a base, a head and a shank, the head thereof comprising a socket wall extending substantially spherically downwardly from the shank thereof to form a convex surface on the lower edge thereof, said wall terminating in a central circular hole to form an annular arcuate lip, and a stud member resiliently mounted in the shank lthereof having an end projecting within said socket. n

A cud button, having a female member comprising a base, a shank and a head, the head thereof comprising a socket wall eX- tending substantially spherically downwardly from the shank thereof to form a convex surface on the lower edge of said wall, terminating in a central circular hole to form an annular arcuate lip.

A separable fastener comprising two members having cooperatingv complementary latch portions adapted to couple said members after said vportions are brought into contact with each other and said members are manually tilted, and means on said members to axially align said members to permit separation thereof. f

27. A separable fastener comprising two members having cooperating complementary latch portions adapted to couple and to securely yinterlock said members at an angle to each other after said portions are brought into contact with eachother and said members are manually tilted.
28. A separable fastener comprising two members having cooperating complementary latch portions adapted to couple and to securely interlock said members at an angle to each other after said portions are brought axially into contact with each other and said members are manually tilted.

A separable fastener comprising two members having cooperating complementary latch portions forming an universal joint adapted to couple and to securely interlock said members at an angle to each other after said portions are brought into Contact with each other and said members are manually tilted in any direc-tion.
