- Specification of Letters'Patent.
Patented Noelia', 1912.
Application yfiled January 1'2, 1912. Serial No. 670,877.
To all whom it may Concern Be itk'nowntliat LEARL R. CoLLiiT'T, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Pittsburgh, yin the countvof Alleghen;Y and State of Pennsylvania, have invented newv -and useful Improvements in Cuff-Buttons,
of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to culi buttons forl link cuffs,- the object of the invention being to provide a button composed of two button .members adapted to be easily. and coiivenient-ly connected and disconnected by a relative endwise movement, to be pivotally coupled' in such manner as to permit relative movementofthe meeting edges of the cufi1 without disconnection of saidbutton mem* bers, and to adapt the latter to assume different relative angles of inclination to conform to variations in the form of the cuif, and which when disconnected are adapted to securely vretain their engagement with the edges of the cuff to which they arerespectively'a'pplied, so thatthe' cuff may be loosened and turned or folded back upon the sleeve ofthe vgarment without liability 'of 'the button membersdropping out and becoming lost or misplaced.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts,v hereinafter fully described and y claimed, reference being had to the accom- A panying drawing. in' which .Figure 1 is a Aside elevation of a cuffv f astener embodying my invention and show-ing I the parts connected. -'Fig .,2 is a longitudinal section through vthe same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the meinbers-of the button or fastener. Fig. 5 is a -similar' View ofthe other member thereof.
'Referring to the drawing, l and Q designatethe two members or separable button elements of the fastener. The member 1 comprises a lbutton or head 3 of suitable form provided with .a shank 4 carrying a ball or spherical portion 5. The member 2 `comprises a button or head G having a pair of spaced jaws 7 projecting therefrom and made of spring or resilient material. The
-Said jaws 7 carry at their free ends a pair of socket members 8. adapted to receive the ball or spherical portion 5 of the member 1.
Thesaid socket membersS are segmentally cut away or recessed, as at 9, in their forward meet-ing edges to form a mouth or enhands, etc., without liability of said button,
members dropping (ut of the .button holes and becoming lost o1| mislaid, as the pair of heads upon each bitton member insure its iirm retention upon the edge of the cuil to which it is applied. It will also be seen `that the construction described permits the two button members to be connected and disconnected in an easy and simple manner and bv a relative endwise movement, thus en; abling said members -to be coupled or uncoupledewitliout awkward or inconvenient movements on' the part of the wearer. It will further be seen that -wheii the partsare connected, a relative universal motion -is permitted, to adapt them to accomiiioda'te,A
themselves to the general movements of tli'e.
cuff, while a pivotal movement is also afforded in the direction of the greatest width or major axis of the cuff by the construction of the shank 7 and socket elements 8 of the button member 2, which are spread by the head 5 of the button meinben so as to provide intervening spaces or slots at diametrically opposite sides of the socket to lpermit the head and its shank ll-.to have pivotal play' so that the button members may freeflyfgassuine different angular positions to acc nil'inodate themselves to the movements of'ftlref'meeting edges of the cuff, without tfilitv of said button members becoming Having thusdesciibed the invention, what I claim as new is :'-e-
A cuff button for link cuffs comprising a pair of'button members, one of said button members having an outer head of .suitable form, an inner head of sphericalv form, and a connecting shank, said inner head being of greater cross sectional areathan said shank, and the other button part=having an outer head of suitable form, a `socket comprising up-shaped se'ctiomandaconectinv shank, Eing und Closing movements of said socket l" sald'sections heilig relutively yelcable to ysections.
