I B. F. STEWART HAIR CURLER Filed June 6, 1925 I gywemloz I 95% 1/ I r Gib mqd Patented Dec. 1, i925.
HAIR C'UELEB.
Application filed June 6, 1.925.
To all whom it may concern.
"3e it known that l. BENJAMIN F. S'rnwna'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jetterson and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Hair Curler, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric hair curlers and more particularly to permanent wavers.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character equipped with simple and eflicient means for securing the ends of the piece of hair to be curled.
To make a permanent wave with the implements now in use requires that the party obtaining the wave sit for six hours, more or less, and the tying of the threads is the feature which consumes so much of this time. It is to overcome this objectionable feature and to shorten the time required that this device is designed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the descriptimr proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the in vention herein disclosed may be made within the scope or what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a permanent wave curler equipped with this improvement Figure 2 is a similar view taken from the other side and with mrts broken out and in section;
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Figure l; and
Figure 4 is a similar view taken on the line H of Figure 1.
In the embodiment illustrated a curling stick 1 of ordinary construction is shown having the usual heating element 2 located centrally there-in for supplying the heat necesary to ell ect the curling. Arranged within the heating element is a core 3 adapted to be rotated by suitable means here shown in the form of a screw 4. This core 3 carries a ratchet wheel 5 at its other end with which is designed to be engaged a pawl 6 carried by the body of curler as is shown in Figure 2. A clamp carrying head is also fixed to this end of the core and the ratchet wheel Serial No. 35,418.
5 is secured to the core adjacent said head, It will thus be seen that the head 10 turns relatively to the body 1 by means oi turning the core 8. A similar head 16 is slidably mounted on the curler body 1 and has a longitudinally extending rib 16 on its inner face which is designed to engage with a groove 7 which extends longitudinally of the body 1 as is shown clearly in Figures 2. and 3. This engagement of head with the body permits the head to slide on the body yet prevents it from rotating thereon.
Mounted on each of the members 10 and. 15 is a clamp 20. These clamps are exactly alike and hence one only will be described in detail.
Each of the heads 10 and 15 has a fiat face 11 and 17 respectively and mounted on these faces are the clamps 20. Each clamp comprises laterally spaced pintles 21 and 22 which are journaled in spaced bearings 23.
Clamping plates or jaws 24 and 25 are mounted on the pintles 21 and 22 and designed to be arranged in lapping relation at their free ends as is shown clearly in Figure 1. J aw 25 overlaps jaw 24: and has its free edge upturned to :torm an entrance lip 26 to facilitate the insertion of the end of the hair thereunder. The clamp 2a is designed to lie close against the face of the head in connec tion with which it is used and is held" engaged with the hair which is inserted there under by the jaw or plate 25 which is spring pressed.
A spring 27 here shown U shaped in form overlies plate 25 and has its ends thereoi coiled around pintle 21 and enerts its tension to force the plate 25 downward.
In the use oi? this curler the strand oil? hair or rather the lock of hair to be curled is inserted near its root end under the clamp on the head 10. The lock is then wound around the stick 1 as is shown clearly in Figure 1 ,and the free end thereof is secured under the clamp 20 on head 15. Wl'ien the parts have been so secured the lock is tightened on the stick by turning the screw 4: which op crates through the core 3 to rotate head 10 and tightly coil the look around the stick, which stick being heated by the electric cur-- rent imparts the necessary wave to the hair which as is known is permanently retained or rather is retained for six or eight months.
From the above description it will be obvious that the securing oi the lock of hair to be curled by the clamp 20 is very quickly elfected so that a great amount of time is saved in the curling operation, the major portion of which is consumed by tying strings on the end of the hair.
I claim:
1. A hair curler comprising a hollow body portion, a core mounted within the body portion, said body portion having a groove extending longitudinally thereof, a head having a rib mounted in the groove to prc vent rotation of the head with respect to the body portion, a head secured to one end of the core and adapted to rotate therewith, clamping members on the heads to clamp an article thereto, said last mentioned head adapted to rotate to twist an article around the body portion, and means for restricting reverse .movement of the last mentioned head.
2. A hair curler comprising a body memher with a core extending centrally therethrough and rotatable relatively thereto, a head carried by the outer end of said core and having a ratchet secured to its inner face, a pawl on said body to engage said ratchet, a head mounted to slide on said body member and held against rotation, spring pressed hair fastening members mounted on said heads and adapted to securely hold operative ends of the lock to be curled, one of said heads being rotatable relatively to the other to provide for twisting of the lock to effect the curling operation.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signm ture.
