- ATTORNEY row extending longitudinally with respect to the axis of the gim tube member, and a rotary element carried by the other member and having a row of teeth thereon for engagement and disengagement with the first teeth, said rotary element being rotatable 'aboutan axis which isparallel to the axis of the gun tube member and whichiis disa posed ec'centrically with respect to the latter 20 axis.
2. The combination with a gun tube member and a movable recoil member having an interlocking guide connection and cooperating thrust-transmitting abutments, of a row of'helica'lly disposed teeth on one member, said row extending longitudinally with respect to the gun tube member, and a rotary element carried by the other member and having helically-disposed teeth thereon for engagement and disengagement with the first teeth by partial turns of said element, said rotary element being rotatable about an axis which is parallel to the axis of the gun tube member andwhich is disposed eccentrically with respect to the latter axis.
3. The combination with a gun tube member and a movable recoil member having an interlocking guide connection and cooperating thrust-transmitting abutments, of a recess in one member having interior threads and a rotary element carried by the other member and having threads for engagement and disengagement with the threads of the recess, said rotary element being disposed longitudinally with respect to the gun tube member.
4. The combination with a gun tube memher and a movable recoil member having an' interlocking guide connection and cooperating thrust-transmitting abutments, of a row of teeth carried by one member, said row extending longitudinally of the gun tube member, an e ement carried by the other member and rotatable about an axis extending longitudinally with respect to the axis of thefgun tube member and having teeth thereon for engagement and disengagement with the first teeth for partial turns of said element, and means for locking the element in position 'wi'th'the teeth thereofengaged with the first teeth; 5. The combination with a gun member and a movable recoil member having an interlocking guide connection and cooperating thrust-transmitting abutments, of a longitudinal recess inone member having interior helical teeth, a shaft journalled on the other member and adapted to fit in the recess and having a row of helical teeth for engagement and disengagement with the'first teeth.
6. The combination with a gun member and a movablezrecoilmember having an interlocking guide connection and cooperating thrust-transmitting abutments, of a longitudinal recess at the breech end having interior helical teeth, a longitudinally:disposed shaft adapted to fit the recess, a journal bear ing for the forward end ofthe shaft adapted to fit the recess, and helical teeth projecting from the shaft for engagement and disengagement with the first teeth partial turns of said shaft.
7 The combination with a gun member and a movable recoil member having an interlocking guide connection and cooperating thrust-transmitting abutments of a longi tudinal recess carried by the gun tube and having interior helicalthreads, ashaft carried by the movable member and arranged to fit in the recess, mutilated threads car ried by the shaft for engagement; and disengagement with thethreads of said recess,'a bearing for the'forward end of the shaft, a threaded bearing for supporting the rear portion of the shaft, and threads carried by the rear portion of said shaft Ior engagement with the threaded bearing.
8. In a gun, the combination with a gun tube and recoil mechanism, of cooperatingjoint members carried by the breech end of the gun tube and by the movable member of the recoil mechanism, an interlocking guide connection between the joint members and extending longitudinally of the tube and of the movable member, abutments carried by the joint members for limiting rearward movement of the gun tube with respect to the movable member, a threaded recess extend ing longitudinally of and in the face of one the joint members, and a mutilated screw carried by the other joint member and arranged for engagement and disengagement with respect to the threads of said recess.
9. In a gun, the combination with a gun tube and recoil mechanism, of cooperating joint members carried by the breech end of the gun tube and by the movable member of the recoilj mechanism, an interlocking guide connection betweenthe joint members and extending "longitudinally of the tube and of the movable member, ab-utments carried by the joint members for limiting rearward movement of the gun tube with respect to the movable member, a threaded recess extending longitudinally of and in the face of one of the joint members, and a mutilated screw carried by the other joint member and arranged for engagement and disengagement with respect to 'thethreads of said recess, and locking means for holding the 1 screw in position yvith the threads thereof;
