FOLDING IRONING BOARD.
Application filed. May 28, 1925. Serial No. 33,430.
To all LU/ w? it may concern.
Be it known that I, Jnssn CUNNINGHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gas City, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and hseful Improvements in a Folding Ironing Board, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved ironing board for household use, and it has reference to the type of board frequently re ferred to in the art as a folding ironing board, whereby to permit it to be collapsed into compact form for convenient storage when not in use. The principal object is to generally improve upon ironing boards of this class by providing one which embodies a novel arrangement of details capable of rendering the device more practical, very sturdy when set up for use, and such as to be collapsed into exceedingly compact form when not in use.
Another object is to provide an ironing board which embodies a sectional top, one section being fastened tothe upper end of a relatively long leg structure, and the other section being hinged to the first section, there being a relatively short leg structure, and this being pivoted to the intermediate portion of the first leg structure, and slidably connected at its top to the hinged section of the top, whereby to permit the pivoted leg structure to be used as a means for swinging the hinged section of the top to permit the ironing board to be set up readily and easily.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and drawing.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, with portions broken away and shown in sections of a folding ironing board constructed. in accordance with the present invent-ion showing the same set up for use.
Figure 2 is an elevational and sectional view showing the board folded to be stored away.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the board in folded condition.
Figure 4.- is a detail section taken upon the plane of the line el4c of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference character 1 designates a relatively stationary and small secti on of the top, the complemental section being represented by the reference character 2. These two sections are adapted to be swung into a plane with each other to function in the ordinary manner. They are of course shaped in top plan to correspond substantially with conventional ironing boards. A stop strip 3 is fastened to the section 1, the section itself being fastened to the offset ends l of the long leg structure represented generally by the reference character 5. This leg structure is actually made up of two spaced parallel legs with appropriate bracing strips 6 therebetween. The long section 2 of the top is hinged to the short section as indicated at 7 It will be observed that a pair of cross pieces 8 and 9 are fastened to the under side of the top section 2 adjacent the hinges, and that a wooden strip, or its equivalent 10, extends between and is connected with the cross strip. A guide is thus provided on the under side of the center of the top sect-ion 2 as shown. The relatively short leg section is represented by the reference character 11, and it will be observed that this is pivotally connected to the intermediate portion of the leg section 5 as at 12. This leg structure is likewise composed of spaced parallel legs with brace bars 13 therebetween. The leg structure 11 also embodies a top cross piece 14, and it will be seen that this is confined for sliding movement in the guide provided by the strip 10. The cross piece, as better shown in Figure 1 is provided with a notch for reception in the strip 10. It will also be observed that a stay rod 15 is pivoted as at 16 to the bracing beams 6, this rod being provided at its opposite end with a book 17 to engage in an eye 18 carried by the brace 13. Furthermore, from Figure 3 it will be seen that an appropriate keeper 19 is employed for holding the free end of the stay rod in an out of the way position when the structure is folded.
Assuming that the board is folded as shown in Figures 2 and 3, and that it is desired to set it up for use as shown in Figure 1, the folded structure must be lifted from the horizontal position shown and brought to an inclined vertical position, standing upon the bottoms of the legs 5. The operator now places his foot against the bracing means 6, and grasps the bracing means 13 of the short link structure 11, lifting upwardly upon this leg structure and utilizing it as a handle lever for sliding the cross piece 14 on the guide 10. Under the cam action produced, the top section 2 will be swung outwardly and into a plane with the section 1, thus positioning the device for use. The stay rod 15 is now hooked to prevent undue spreading of the leg structures. It will be observed from Figure 1 that the short leg structure has passed beyond the dead center and that in use the weight is exerted in a direction to cause it to stay put rather than collapse. To fold the board, the operation described is reversed.
It is thought that a careful consideration of the description in connection with the drawings will enable persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates to obtain a clear understanding of the same. Therefore, a more lengthy description is probably unnecessary.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A folding ironing board comprising a leg structure ol'fsetlaterally at one end, a top section fastened to said ofiset end, a second top section swingably connected with said first named top section, a guide on the under side of said second named top section, and another leg structure pivoted between its ends to the intern'iediate portion of the first named leg structure and having slidable connection at its upper end with said guide.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
JESSE CUNNINGHAM.
