IMPROVEMENT IN TACKS FOR FASTENING STAIRCARPETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,358, dated October 27, 1874; application tiled September 29, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MORITZ KErcKL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tacks for Fastening Stair-Carpets, of which the following is a specification:

This invention is intended as an improvement upon the Letters Patent of the United States granted to me on the 23d day of June, A. D. 1874; and to such end it consists in a tack, the shank of which is flat or angular on both ends, one end of said shank being provided with a screw-thread to receive an ornamental head, in such a manner that, when the tack is driven into the viser of the stairs, the carpet can be forced over the pointed outer end, and, by applying' the head, the carpet is retained in position. The dat or angular shape of the shank prevents the tack from turning round when the head is screwed on.

This -invention is illustrated in the accompanyin g drawing, in which Figure l represents a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a face or plan view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section.

In the drawing, the letter A designates a tack, the shank of which is pointed on both ends, and provided, near one end, with a metal screw-thread, a, while that portion of said shank which is intended to enter the Wood is made flat or angular, or in such a form that it will not be liable -to turn round after it has been driven home. The screw-thread a is intended to receive and retain the head B, which is, by preference, made ornamental, and provided with a square, d, to oder a good hold for a wrench. 4

In order to secure the tacks in position, their heads B are unscrewed, and two or more tacks are driven into eachv viser of the stairs which are to be covered with a carpet. The carpet is then forced over the pointed outer edges of said tacks, the heads B are screwed on, and the carpet is retained iirmly in position.

On account ofthe Hat or angular form of its shank, my tack is not liable to turn round when its head is applied.

If desired, a stair-rod, D, may be placed between the carpet and the heads B on each viser; but it will be readily seen that the carpet is retained solely by the shanks of the tacks A.

These tacks are of particular advantage for fastening stair-carpets which cover the entire surface of the stairs, and leave no space on their sides for securing fastenings for stairrods of the ordinary construction.

When the heads' B are unscrewed, the carpet can be withdrawn and taken away without disturbing the tacks A, and the operation of removing and replacing the carpet can be accomplished with little trouble or loss of time.

The head B of my tack is tapering, so that when the tack is driven obliquely into the step, as shown in Fig. 4, the head will fit the corner,4 and the carpet will be securely retained.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An improved tack, essentially as herein shown and described, for fastening stair-carpets, provided at one end with a screw-thread to receive the head B, while the main portion of the shank is iiattened, so that it will not turn when the head is applied, substantially as set forth.
